Every aspect you showed on how the protection SHOULD have worked is correct, how can Extech (who isn't actually new to the professional meter market) screw things up so badly?
Well, let's see... If I were to buy this thing, it would be for the SMD tweezers convenience, not for mains. There are plenty of useful things with 'design flaws'. I'll probably buy one, plaster a note on the back 'not for mains', and happily use it for my SMDs.
If the design of a unit is so counter intuitive that it can't be operated without reading the manual then it suffers from Bad design.
"RTFM" presupposes that the user is always going to remember the details of the manual amongst all the other pieces of equipment they are likely to use.
To have to re-read the manual each time you come back to use a piece of equipment means that it has a Very Bad ergonomic design.
@rpcelectronics I also cant work with anything but the best quality of tools. If your reading is wrong, you know its you and not the instrument. Please Dave, throw that away. People that can't afford a safe to use multimeter should not be probing high voltages.
@DanFrederiksen If I'm such a "Sheep" then why is Fluke the standard among engineers? Because they have excellent build quality, lifetime warranties, calibration services, and have high tolerances in regards to accuracy. I cannot risk false or inaccurate readings, so if being a sheep makes me a better engineer then baahhaahah!
Humph!?!?!!! That's a shame =( I'd also venture to say that it was the interlock device that failed. But Dave... your too funny but don't stomp on the meter "Extech" can retreive the meter and conduct a little R&D to better solve the issue, and we can't do that if there is shoe prints all over it! But your still AWESOME Dave!!! =D Keep up the good work =)
Dave, you IDIOT! ha ha... Did not read the manual? Shame! Kidding, I could have done the same idiot thing. However I would not buy piece of crap like that to star with. It;s clear to me it's a 5 or 24 volt DC max PCB tool, not a robust general industrial strength DMM for mains. Every job has the right tools.
.
Seriously love your videos mate, but I think you could take up acting, be in horror films as the insane creepy Inn keeper or killer.... you kind of went nuts in this video/
I love your videos! That meter should have one of those covered toggle switches that pilots have so they don't make a mistake while they are trying to probe the skys.
I once was working on a air conditioning unit up on a high roof. The 600 psi rated freon hose going to my pressure gauges blew, making a loud bang, scared me and I almost fell 30 feet.
@EEVblog That equation works on paper but as we find out through trials what is claimed on paper is not always true in the real world. Did you have it set on auto mode during the initial test?
Dave,
Your problem is you are just too timid and not willing to say it like it is! You need to open up and not be bashful... :)
Give em hell...

after seeing that company Cyrustek which made the chip inside the meter, I was wondering are there heaps of little companies in asia that make chips?
what costs are involved in setting up a factory to design such chips(something like the cyrustek chip)?

The picture's a 120 volt mains, like here in North America. But still, if it fails so catastrophically, then something's up.
