My psych just diagnosed me with MDD and now also, Bipolar and he's giving me Cymbalta and now also Abilify to treat it. The Abilify makes my legs crazy. Any idea why anti-psychotics give one weird dreams?
I wish doctors would keep a list a of which side effects are a problem for their patients and always take them into consideration when prescribing new medicines.
Hey Mark. Do you have a lot of experience with Lurasidone (Latuda)? I read that it doesn't hinder the memory and learning centers of the brain. Is it very effective for Schizophrenia? Take care.
I take Clozaril (Clozapine) and I'm very happy with it. I take it for schizoaffective disorder and I find Clozaril to be a very helpful part to my treatment. I'm no longer hearing voices or seeing things, my thoughts are clearer, I'm more social. I also take Lithium for the bipolar portion of the schizoaffective illness which helps greatly with my mood. It helps prevent depression & keeps me from getting manic (irritability, agitation, spending sprees, sleep problems, racing thoughts, etc.)
I dont like geodon and abilify too. The doctors like to proscribe these two because they have such innoculous sounding names that give people the impression that its no stronger than taking an ibproffen so they are less likely to resist taking it. For me neither of them worked and both had obnoxious side effects from taking it.
Really interesting. I am on Sertraline and Quetiapine xr, I really like the Quetiapine. Perhaps it works better for me because I am not Schizophrenic.
@anticenaguy Wow. Really? I took this stuff(uh, hum... not prescribed) and all it did was make me feel 'normal' and mellowed out. It gave the complete opposite effect that I was looking for.
@anticenaguy yah they arent good, but at low dose they can be pretty good what was your dose? and also you're more of a guy that needs a kick in the pants. so antipsych drugs, should be a no no. have you ever tried gabapentin? it's pretty benign in terms of side effects, can make you sleepy, but also more energy. and there is also lyrica as well. they both are pretty good for anxiety and can alleviate some symptoms of depression.
I take the Aripriprazole, and I find the worst side effect is that my right arm likes to twitch when I'm trying to sleep. They gave me another prescription to stop the twitching, which makes me worry that they're going to simply give me more and more drugs for all the problems the drugs cause.
@SchizophrenicQueen I had the twitchy-ness when I took aripriprazole, and risperidone. The dosing for each was on the higher end of the spectrum, I guess. Well my doc told me to just take some Benadryl, as the box prescribed, to ease the twitches and restlessness. Talk to your doc about that. Least it's one less script to get. :\
@SchizophrenicQueen true but, usually when you're on a small amount of drugs, like say 2 different ones, side effects like these, dont happen very much. what's wrong is when say they throw an antidepressant in to the mix. so not only are you getting stimulus from the antidepressant but the antipsych as well. and then they give u a drug to stop teh twitching, but those generally dont work, especiallly if youre taking like 2 other drugs. so just thank your lucky stars for that
I would love to see a video on your take on quetiapine on bipolar disorder. In Australia at least its being promoted heavily for being one of the only antipsychotics with a researched and somewhat proven effect on depressive symptoms.

Dear Doc,
Dr. Dean Edell recently retired (he was a radio doc -- KGO San-Fransisco ). I think you should take his place on the radio.

Suggestion Question: My docs want me on meds again. What's something I can look into/ask about for Bipolar II w/ transient psychosis and bulimia?
I appreciate any info you or anybody else can offer. Thanks.
