  • canadian punk at its best.

  • it's not really about Don Cherry, otherwise this hypothetical letter would be addressed to him and not Ron McLean. Don Cherry is often the unwitting tool of the establishment, and while I don't think he means any ill intent, his words carry a lot of weight and influence. Trouble is, his old timey "support the government, military and the status quo" does not mesh with the opinions of these modern times.

But then you have Ron, playing second fiddle to this crazy old man. 1/2

  • @chuckb11 And you can tell Ron shares few of Don's world perspectives, and is just sort of sitting there going a long for the ride. But, the song isn't about Don Cherry in that it is more about how the hockey culture in Canada can and is used as a tool for the Canadian government to steer public opinions towards their espoused ideals and opinions, they've also used it as a venue to showcase their militant arm and making it seem like war, military, etc are an inescapable part of our culture.

  • So he's asking Ron, how do you and "I" accept these truths and justify spending money and supporting a sporting league where the owners allow it to be used as a place to display "propaganda" (for lack of a better word) ? Clearly they both love hockey, but are uncomfortable with the fact that it can be used to sway public opinion in politics, war, and whatever else is on the docket.

Yet Ron, is overshadowed by Don Cherry and often sits in silence while Don Rambles about governmental rhetoric.

  • @chuckb11 Oh and the December the 25th comment is about a Maple Leaf's game where the half time show was a bunch of soldiers grappling down from the rafters (or whatever) of the arena, in their full war gear with guns and what not.

  • and also, whether people think so or not, Don Cherry provides great perspective on the game that no other person in the media seems to have.

  • @17MJG93 i'd agree with everything you said, except that his perspective is "great"

  • The music is really good, the vocals are awesome, the lyrics are well-worded, but I completely disagree with the message being conveyed. Cut Don Cherry up all you like, but he's a good man who's had an incredibly positive impact on the Canadian public, and I see no reason to crucify the man for being patriotic. I know that being a proud Canadian or believing in a CANADIAN cultural tradition is stupid and politically incorrect, but fuck, I think we can still use a guy like Cherry on the air.

  • I wonder if this is an actual letter that he sent to Ron McLean, and if so if he got a response.

  • can anyone explain to me what december 25 has to do with wtf he's talking about?

  • The song has nothing to do with hockey. Other than Don Cherry's love for the military. Hockey is not the essence of the song at all.

  • This song blows hard. Unintelligent lyrics posing as deep thought, terribly delivered in a whiny voice with no diversity, depth or range . . . what a load of crap.

  • @VoiceoftheDeformed Ur trolling, right? Because you can't be serious.

  • @awesomemaster1906 Nope. Not "trolling", lol. This music is absolute shit.

  • @VoiceoftheDeformed No, it's absofuckinglutely beautiful any displays a truth about Don Cherry. Do you honestly disagree with it's message?

  • @VoiceoftheDeformed go suck Don Cherry's fat, wrinkly dick.

  • @VoiceoftheDeformed what the fuck are you doing here then??? go check something out on youtube you actually dig and maybe write something nice about it....dick

  • @jetsika A friend posted this to Facebook and recommended I check it out. So I did, and then posted my own opinion about this shitty song by a nobody band which I'm free to do and would have done whether it was a positive or a negative one . . . bitch.

  • @VoiceoftheDeformed You're obviously a troll. You don't exactly have an opinion, all you have are insults.

  • @jjbruce Bravo, asshole. Label me. Good job. *golf clap*

Do you feel better now that you've tagged me as a troll? Now that you've classified me into your narrow little view of how the world works? Pathetic. Whether you agree with my opinion or not, whether you define it as insults or slander or negative rubbish, it's still an opinion. And this music, in my opinion, is absolute garbage.

  • @VoiceoftheDeformed You're still resorting to insults. How about you calm down are post something with intelligence, instead of resorting to childish insults. I don't think that anyone minds that you dislike this music, we all can't enjoy the same things. But you come off as someone who is just trying to upset other people, which makes you a troll.

  • @jjbruce Correction: You said that I'm "resorting to insults" when in fact I responded to insults. The reality of the situation is that I have an opinion that you obviously disagree with and you "resorted to insults" by calling me a troll. Talk about childish. Also, learn how to write in English before talking about intelligence. Your statement "How about you calm down are post something with intelligence, instead of resorting to childish insults." makes absolutely no sense.

  • @VoiceoftheDeformed I'm sorry that I made a typing error, and I'm sorry that you couldn't figure that out. But you're still resorting to insults, I mean, you're 28 years old, be mature. You instigated the insults in the first place, how did you think people would respond? You are a troll, it's not an insult, it's the truth. Would you prefer to be called a sociopath?

  • @VoiceoftheDeformed Furthermore, by actually reading the order of the posts to see where the insults started, you'll find that I offered no direct insult to anyone except the authors of this auditory defecation until someone else directly affronted me.

  • @VoiceoftheDeformed That's exactly what I'm talking about. You could have just stopped listening to the song and been done with it, but instead you decided to act like a child. What do you think would happen if you started insulting a band on the comments section for one of it's songs? Did you think all the other people who disliked the song are going to check the comments to agree with you? You're a troll, I don't mean this as an insult, merely a statement of the truth.

  • @jjbruce One last time, it's a fucking opinion. Everybody has one. I chose to voice mine. And you think I need to calm down? LMAO, take a step back and a look in the mirror kid. I'm laughing at your expense while you're freaking out because I posted a single negative comment on YouTube, lol. You joined a bandwagon of douchebags with their panties in a bunch hell bent on slaying all those you self-righteously proclaim to be trolls, lol. EPIC FAIL kid.

  • @VoiceoftheDeformed I just don't understand why you feel the need to be so insulting. No one really cares for your negativity. You could have done what everyone else who doesn't like this music does, not listen to it, and not give a shit. But for some reason you seem to have taken it personally, and resorted to insulting the music, and the people who enjoy it. I'm not freaking out at all, I find it humorous that you would think I was, I am the one who is laughing.

  • canadian..^^

  • this is by far the best punk rock cd made, in terms of music AND Lyrics. Absolutely brilliant!

  • Pretty good for an Indian band I'm impressed. I'm from Canada and we have a sick band that is a lot like propagandhi called alexisonfire. You should look them up!

  • @BrendanIsGay this band is from canada, no?

  • @BrendanIsGay ahahahahaha

Even if you didn't know beforehand, the lyrics CLEARLY show they're Canadian...

  • and again tonight it happens

  • LADIES AND GENTLEMEN - A GREAT BAND IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL. CONFERRING, COMMENT! WORTHWHILE!

    "Conforme-se Clip"

  • Sweetness!

  • do people not understand Don Cherry is putting on an act for entertainments sake?

  • @RunningP123456 people are still pissed about his attempts to sell militaism to children, even if you're acting it, a bad message is still a bad message.

  • Thank you for being among the brave who aren't afraid to say that Emperor Don has no clothes.

  • This rivals Belvedere's Too Minutes for Looking So Good, run you in the boards he'll END YOUR DAY!

  • Unbelievable !

  • Does anyone have this clip? or the episode it was from?

  • this song is the sole example of putting all the emotion of hockey into five minutes. no-one has ever made a hockey song so powerful in instrumentation, emotion, and most importantly, protest.

  • @awesomemaster1906 hit somebody by warren zevon is a pretty good one... not heavy on the protest though.

  • Hey NHL!!! Here's your new fucking theme.

  • Look. He's pissed off & rightfully so. He had this thing (Hockey night in Canada) that he had for most of his life. Thought it was true, thought it was safe enough to share with his family (ie> niece).

Only to find war propagandhi displayed to drum up support for the troops & set in the minds of the inpressionable youth a sense of moral responsablity to the militaristic actions of their nation.

After all what is more linked to our nation than Hockey, let alone Hockey Night In Canada????

  • @jackno7daniels

Ohh Ohhh! I know what's more linked to our nation!! Helping those less fortunate than us, and fighting oppression, whether it be facism or religious extremism. Because, you know, sitting around with our ears plugged and eyes shut works just fabulously. Gotta love isolationism.

  • @brfowlie you wanna help people house, feed & educate them. Education is the only way to fight facism. If poeple wanna commit their lives to helping others in need then great. I'm not knockin the soilders but how the f*ck are you supposed to get peace by blowing shit up??

"but just a flag to raze the children

till they're nothing more than ballasts for fulfilling

    a madman's dream of a paradise.

    Complexity reduced

    to black and white.

How do I protect her from this cult of death"

  • @jackno7daniels

We're not the ones planting bombs in roads and markets, we're not the ones strapping bombs to ourselves in the hopes of killing as many people as possible to get 72 virgins. Personally, I applied to be a combat engineer. Yes, I may blow a thing or 2 up, but I'm going to be clearing IED's and landmines. Pretty sure that's helping to make the world a better place, ensuring a kid can run around in a field without losing life or limb. Too bad no one cares about the people. Just $

  • @brfowlie Well I commend on you're dedication to this country & to the needs of others, but i still have to stand by what I say. Having said that I no longer wish to bicker and argue with you. So what do you think of the song?

  • @jackno7daniels

Face-melting. Love it. It's a damn good tune. Makes me wanna go through with my break-shit-idea of having a punching wall.

  • @jackno7daniels Well fuckin' put my Friend, fuckin' eh.

  • @jackno7daniels Lol, "Only to find war propagandhi displayed".

    *Propaganda?

  • Little overblown, I think. Nothing wrong with what Don Cherry does, Coachs corner is hockey and whatever cherry is into. Most shows that share that context to any extent do the same.

I think the lyricists issue is with what Don is saying, not that hes using his show to push any sort of view in general. Cause really, looking at the band they seem almost entirely ideologically opposed to everything Don Cherry believes in

  • it's Nuernberg not Nuremberg :)

  • Don Cherry can choke on his hypocritical verbal bullshit

  • One issue I have witht he lyrics.

Around 3:15 It's "Don't be suprised if we find ourselves reaping", not "You'll be suprised".

  • To follow that comment up, our image HAS been tarnished as we followed bush into Iraq and Pakistan and such...

still though, these men have secured freedom for us, and they shouldn't be nit picked by this punk band, as good as Propagandhi may be.

I played my hockey on a CFB where my dad works. With Military kids. The two biggest things in many of their lives were the army, and hockey.

Sorry you grew up in Canada, Propagandhi, but that's how shit goes. sorry.

  • @ColinGWood i don't think a couplet like "Alberta born, prairie raised / ain't a sheet of ice north of Fargo I ain't played" betrays a distaste for either hockey or Canada - quite the opposite, in fact. i think what they object to is more the hijacking of a supposedly neutral environment loved by many young people into a recruitment drive for a combat force. i could be wrong.

  • @tomdissonance

oh yea, he loves hockey and doesnt want to see the military involved.. but i just think hes making too big a deal out of it. Comparing a military appreciation night to the Nurenberg Rallies is just crooked, I don't care what any canadian says.

I remember when we were peacekeepers.

  • Pakistan? Are you for fucking real?? And IRAQ?? Seriously?? Our troops are in Kandahar, which is in neither Iraq or Pakistan. Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with the fact that this song is blowing a Troop Appreciation night completely out of proportion, but man, if you're going to try to argue with these kind of people, the only way to gain ANY sort of upper hand is to know your facts.

  • The fact that propagandhi wrote this anti-canadian forces song is rediculous.

When you're making a Troops Appreciation night at a hockey game into some melo dramatic thesis for a "righteous punk song" that's going to cleanse the masses, that's when you need to give your head a shake. I mean the CF are by no means an evil entity. We have an overwhelmingly positive history as keepers of the peace. Everybody knows canada is a chillin place, EXCEPT FOR PROPAGANDHI?

  • @ColinGWood

You are aware that Chris grew up in a military family and probably has a far better idea of how the Canadian military works than likely ever will, right?

  • @emmanuelxgoldstein

Regardless. We live in a country universally viewed as a good place. We don't start wars, but when good people are in danger we will help end them.

    what is evil in that?

  • got a friend in the army, who shoots people in the head ,dont be deceived

  • thats not their point man.

It's how people like don cherry try to use the media to convey to impressionable people (including children) that their personal beliefs and celebrations are less important than the quarrels of foreign forces and the principles of those in power, whether theyre right or wrong. The innocence of the context (a hockey match) practically makes it brainwashing.

You could say there's no problem with a pro-military country which isn't at war, but when the shit hits the fan...

  • @ColinGWood Canada is no longer a "neutral" peace keeping nation

  • I stongly doubt this song is anti- canadian forces. Matter of fact, this song isnt about the forces. It is about using a show as coaches corner to get a political message through, which has nothing to do with hockey. If you listen carefully, he doesnt mention the ''canadian troops'' at all, but rather the parodox of using a game to discuss war.

  • Don Cherry is a beaut. Canadian as fuck. But he's an idiot sometimes.

  • Whoo-hoo-hooo!

"It takes a village (and its idiot?) to raise a child!"

Now if only we had something equally caustic to rinse the appalling stupidity of Rex Murphy out of our ears!

  • @nigelgspencer1 no way rex murphy is awesome

  • Right. That's what I said: no way Murphy is awesome...just stumbling, bumbling, pretentious, inarticulate and bigoted. Did you hear him on the visit of Prince Charles and the horse-lady? He shut up and talked over anyone who had a negative opinion of their Greco-German Royalty. If this simpering sychophant only knew how many Brits and Canadians disagree with him, but he didn't want to know. (People like him have also conveniently forgotten how they bullied the real Princess to death.)

  • don is a beauty

  • GoatFishSheep Pride has nothing to do with nationality, please base your enjoyment on a more valid reason like they have guitars and feet. "GO GUITARS AND FEET!!!!!!!!!!"

  • RIP Don Cherry?

    so go die?

wtf...don cherry aint dead..are you on crack kid

  • He died with the lock out "kid".

  • Epic hockey anthem!

  • Easily the greatest song about hockey ever.

  • @rythmus

    thats coz there arent many

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks Netbent...You're right, great cover....looks suspiciously like the cover to Michael Parenti's book entitled Against Empire...

  • BEST F*****G BAND AND SONG EVER!!!

  • Holy F@CK! They weren't lying when they said this was their best album so far. I'm glad I preordered and I can't wait to get my copy in the mail.

These guys are SO inspiring. In the face of overwhelming odds, apathy and obstacles, they just keep getting better musically, and their lyrics just keep getting more succinct.

  • Damn...What a track!!!...Propagandhi are so solid in so many different aspects, amazing every time, but not surprising...LOL ...Im glad someone finally stood up and made the distinction for being able to be a hockey fan and NOT being pro war...

  • umm, don't have to be pro war to support troops.. too bad most people think that's the case. I know I'm not pro war, but the men and women who serve our country, very best. wish there was an easier way to bring stability to the shitty parts of the world. C'est la vie.

  • You also don't "have to" be pro war or feel you "must" support the troops...If and when you are a hockey fan, when it boils down to being a 'kids game'...as the song simply states...nuff said...

  • Umm, real hockey, in the end, is not a kids game

it's a full contact, high paced sport.

  • ...Of which, that full contact is being heavily avoided by the media of late (Not filming fighting ect),for the exact reasoning,of Don Cherry being the proponent of 'its a game for the kids'...but in the same breath, bringing war to the for front...and making people feel 'wrong' for not agreeing... ...I didn't say it,Propagandhi said it,i just happen to agree with them...if you happen to not...that happens to be something i could care less about ;-)

  • different folks different strokes, eh? I just hate the association with supporting troops and supporting war. I know that we're beating a dead horse over there, they haven't had real peace in a long, long, long time. Guess that's why we're still there, to try to help.

  • Hate the 'association' all you want to...the simple fact is,there is,and always will be a connection, there WILL never be a dis-connect...and if its what your looking for...i dunno what to tell yuh...lol

...Hockey games are best left for Hockey games i guess...One can 'support the troops' without having to feel 'co-opted' to do so ;-)

  • also, the guy who wrote it, took his niece to a hockey game which happend to be on a trop appreciation night. If he'd've gone to an "animal rights" night, then we wouldn't have this killer tune.

  • ...Naw,than they could have simply wrote a song in support, instead of feeling the need to 'denounce'...they have many ways around writing a killer track...and your arguments don't strike me as one of them...lol

  • I'm not a musician man, I just like this song even though the meaning is obviously lost on people as "ignorant" and I.

  • *as I.

  • You began the comment reply barrage mang...not me...im one of 100's in this list...and its not about me,its about the song...

  • well, look at your first comment. You can see why I hate the pro-war association. The song was inspired by a "troop appreciation" night, not a "Let's kill some brown people" night. I felt the need to speak up and let you know how ignorant and selfish the comment seemed to me. Guess some people are too conceited to realize the idea of "thy country before thy self"

  • fantastic

  • think hard for a sec.. you're talking of the distinction between being a hockey fan and being pro war.

I'm talking of the distinction between supporting the members of the Canadian Forces and wanting to see thousands of people die needlessly.

  • Aaand with that comment,i say, there are more than 1 or 2 ways of looking at things...and sweeping generalizations in absence of the intricacies of humanity, don't help it,any way your looking...As for thousands of innocent people needlessly dying...that has already happened, and will continue to happen, until the end of time...and MOST def. when militarism is our first and only thought towards 'help'...

  • Not too mention...Once again, sports and politics couldnt be further from one another...Seperation of church and state is good, same should go for militarism and sport...lol

  • Well, that's one way of looking at it. But, like you said, there are more than one or two ways of looking at things.

By the way, lay off the bonghits. Your sentences are starting to lose their coherence.

Anyhow, I can tell that you're going to keep trying to use bigger and bigger words so you can seem smarter than me to anyone who gives a shit to read these stupid comments, so I'll save you the trouble. A winrar you is!!! Seeing as I support troops, I also support bombing peoples homes.

  • people have to see this band to believe it, they really are that good!

  • Some pedantic corrections: it's "Dear Coach's Corner" and the line is "Well, don't be surprised if we find ourselves reaping"

  • fucking amazing. i don't know anyone else who writes lyrics so emotionally/melodically compelling while simultaneously having such a clear analysis of real life events. thanks for posting the lyrics, I've been trying to figure them out on my own.
