Thanks for the video! I have two questions though. Is it possible to "snapshot" everything (all partitions) present on your pc ? (lets say 2 partitions, Data and Restore or something like that) And when you reload it, you have these 2 partitions saved as an ISO image, in wich partition should you reload it? because I'd think you dump each partition in it's original partition again, but seeing as they are in 1 ISO image, you wuold have to dump then in one of the partitions ...? (see next post)
Good video. At one point you mention that the color code used to identify the driver where restore needs to happen isn't clear. I noticed that as you click on the driver, the bottom portion swtiches between C and D drive.
One question though! Would this restore time back the Antivirus information we have? Say, my anti-virus is 2 months old when I create the back up, what happens when I restore this imssage 10 months later? Appreciate your video. Thanks.
rtbuell.. thanks for such a great video ! Quick question... Say my hard drive is toast and I need to get a new one. Can I use the disc and snapshot image on a new hard drive? Would I need to format the new hard drive at all before trying to do this? I will be building my FIRST system soon so I appreciate any advice! Thanks!!
@broggi007 Yup, you can use the snap shot on a new hard drive provided all other things on the system are the same, cpu, graphics card, etc... I am not sure if you have to format it first or not, I have never tested/tried that.
I've never heard the BIOS being referred to as Bi o/s. At training in CDW they didn't call it that, other than that, the tutorial is great. I like it better than using Ghost.
QUESTION: Lets say i made an ISO Snapshot of an Windows & OS ...... is it possible to load that image onto a different computer running a different OS eg. Vista ?
@crazeeblu Possibly. First, it will probably wipe out ALL data on the vista machine. You may also get into licensing issues with Microsoft. They will see that two computers now have the same key code. I am not sure what would happen. Thirdly, I am not sure how windows will handle the different drivers. For example, unless it is the exact same hardware, windows will need different drivers compared to the other PC. I am not sure how this would be handled.
@rtbuell2004 thanks for this very informative video! you really help us, I am a computer shop owner but it so hard to format 1 by 1 my workstation. it really helps me alot!
@cncgilby yes, you have to plug in the external HD. You can burn to discs but it will probably take several disc depending on the size of your OS and programs. On the external HD a folder will be created with many files in that folder. Basically it splits up the back up into a few smaller files with in the main folder.
@rtbuell2004 ok thanks for the clarification. im testing it as i type this. so far it seems to be working fine but there is one major difference. yours took 20-30 minutes to complete and im coming up on 4 hours with mine. is it cause i did my entire os with data and programs and you just did the os?
@cncgilby how big is the file you are trying to back up? I think mine was less then 30 GB... I had the OS and programs only. If you have your documents/music/videos/ect... it is going to be a much bigger back up. All of my data is on my d drive.
@rtbuell2004 I dont remember the size...it finished up in just over 4 hours and I rebooted and it got stuck in a reboot cycle. I shrunk the C: down to half the size and moved all my data to the other half. Making another disc now to try again, This one was 22.4GB
@cncgilby the disc is the wizard so you can have access to the image that one saves in a hard drive. 30GB's would take 4.7GB x 7DVD's=32.9. You would need roughly 7 DVD's to save the image. That's why you don't want to do it in DVD's. The external HD will be connected the a USB port that way you can search the image using the wizard that is in the CD.
Can anyone tell me how to create a full system back up in case my hard drive fails or if I chose to buy a bigger hard drive. I would like to know how to create a disk that I can install my OS onto a new HD. I only have a restore disc and I know from experience it will not run on a new HD.
The idea of buying a new OS and installing everything again turns my stomach.
Yes, you can, but you need to upgrade the free version (which costs money). Also, just to warn you, depending on the size of your iso you might need a bunch of dvds or cds to do this. If you have a dvd burner I recommend using dvds to cut down on the discs needed (compared to using cds). Good luck.
I don't think it does. I didn't see an option for grabbing your backup over the network, only from an external/internal hard drive. I could be wrong, honestly I didn't look very hard.
Yup. As long as it is not on the same drive as your windows install, you can make your back up to any drive... external hard drive, internal hard drive on a separate partition from windows, and or a USB if you wanted.
