@494ta like Axelolson6 replied it's a Matte Box, but the one on my rig is not a true matte box. A true matte box holds filters which can easily be changed out, also the can have a built in mask for wide screen cropping. Mine was only about $35. A true matte box can run $250 and up. I use my mainly to prevent lens flare, so it's a large hood in my case. If I need filters, I just screw them to my lens.
@hampussamuelsson If someone stole your images and took credit for your work, that's sucks. I was inspired by the article at cheesycam, and wanted to give credit to whoever did the original build. I think it inspired a lot of other builds. You should take it up with the guys at Cheesycam. Where do you have your images posted for this build? Have you updated the rig at all. Please share. Thanks!
@tonyzeh Not blaming you, or cheesycam, just this guy Johan. I uploaded this on a swedish forum: fotosidan.se/forum/showthread.php?t=122469&highlight=t%E4ltpinnar
the picture links are broken and the forum don't allow me to edit them.
But it's clearly not his name on my Z.finder: x.abacrombie.se/bild/DSLR_shoulder_rig/IMG_3193_2.jpg
Oh, and sweet rig you have. Like the shoulder pad a lot. I haven't updated mine much. I decided to make a new and stronger rig right after I was done with this one. But money has kept me back since then. Next rig will be with standard sized rods.
Nice overview, though some close ups of where things intersect would be helpful e.g. how is the camera base attached, how are the hot shoes for the lights and monitor put together, just a few little things. Otherwise, very helpful thanks for posting.
@joemichelli If you are interested and don't have access to a welder I am making the counter weight system available for $15. See my blog at PhotoZblog and look for the DSLR Shoulder Rig Post, where its located.

@494ta Its a matte box or in some cases a lens hood. It helps keep out extraneous light etc.
