My favorite language-related brain lesion was a man who had a tumor in his anterior cingulate gyrus. He knew two languages, Italian and Friulian, and he could still speak either one if he chose to. But he lost the ability to stay in one language without paying attention. If he just talked, every sentence got one of the two languages at random.

He also lost his lifelong fear of airplanes and started telling dirty jokes all the time. The anterior cingulate gyrus is a funny place.

Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) does not involve lesions in the brain but is a form of language dementia resulting from brain nerve cell degeneration resulting in difficulty thinking of words and reduced ability to understand speech. Interestingly it is more prevalent in males compared to dementia that involves forgetfulness or memory loss, which is more prevalent in females. PPA symptoms often include progressive loss of ability to perform even simple mathematical operations. Math = Language?
