Update on the killers: Heather Swallers was released from prison in 1998, Derek Dzvirko in 1999, Ali Willis in 2001 (but remains under community supervision), and Lisa Connelly in 2004...Marty Puccio, Donny Semenec, and Derek Kaufman remain behind bars.
So sad when the sentence years are displayed over pictures of the kids when they look so innocent, especially marty in that touching moment where he shows his love for his brother and it says "death by way of electric chair". Very smart shooting, if the sentences were displayed when they were in the coutroom or when they didnt look so innocent, it wouldnt have as much impact as it did
At the end of the film, subtitles show the prison sentences that the teenagers received. Heather Swallers received seven years, Derek Dzvirko received 11 years, Ali Willis received 40 years, Donny Semenec, Derek Kaufman (the hitman), and Lisa Connelly received life sentences, and Marty Puccio was sentenced to death in the electric chair, which was later commuted to life in prison, as mentioned in the closing credits.
The first time that I saw this film I thought the lyric, "Under the big bright yellow sun," was, "And then the big black Lincoln comes," like a tip of the hat to the stretched Town Cars that they use in funerals.
It made sense, at the time, in the context of this film.
derek dzirvirko has a myspace blog in which he answeres questions about the murder...its funny as shit, people are flaming his ass...calling him fat and sayin he lsot his virginity in prison...its hilarious...he is a rat fink anyway
i think instead of killing him they should have just told the cops that he had raped the two chicks... duh.. they could prove it...or they should have just tried to frame him...they screwed themselves by murdering him...
yeh but they just didn't think that really. thought of getting rid of someone they would have a better life. but once somethi g this bad in ur life happens its hard not to say anything about it
I read somewhere online that Heather Swallers was back in prison on drug charges, this was about five years ago. When the movie was being made back in 2000, Dereck DzVirko was reportedly been seen hanging around the set and had contacted the director wanting to play his part as himself. He appearantly owes his family alot of money.

The families in this movie were so clueless and naive of their children. I enjoyed how they showed middle-upper class Americans in this movie.

All those kids do is have sex, do drugs, drive their cars, and drink all freaking day long. I wish I had it that freaking easy.
Bunch of spoiled kids with nothing to do and no brains to get away with a murder.

what was the real case called
smashingdna 3 years ago
It was the case of Bobby Kent. The characters names from the movie are the real peoples names, no changes.
The sentances are accurate too but most of them got out on parole and Marty's sentance was reduced to life.

Derek Kauffman, Donny Semenac and Marty Puccio are still in prison
