Samba 4 will mean major re-engineering of Linux Domains. Up until this point, Samba has been free to design its LDAP Schema according to whatever works best, but Samba 4 will mean that LDAP must at least resemble Microsoft's mold. As a result, I see many LDAP applications changing their LDAP schema architecture, to fit Samba 4.

Current stable samba is at 3.2.0.
It has come a long way.
Samba 4.0 (still in Alpha stages) will support Active Directory. Imagine backing up active directory without a full blown image
Most high end switches that support using windows domains for authentication are using samba most likely a bsd derivative.

Samba 3.2.0 is still in pre-release. Even after it is released as stable, it will be some time before Linux distributors pick it up.
