On video number 21, I was already thinking that that will be the last video I will watch for this playlist. But then you decided to create a new world. Conclusion: continue watching and hope for a better fortress.
Man, the life of a dwarf seems so cramp and dreary. Certainly not the kind of place for a human to live in.
Thanks alot for these videos. I've been looking into playing Dwarf Fortress again, since my last attempt was such a horrible failure because I couldn't figure out how to make anything work well. Maybe this time will fair better.
I just started playing this recently and your videos have been a fantastic help. It's so much easier than learning things from the wiki since everything can be explained as it's executed in the game. Thankyou for putting in the time and effort to make this.
That 3D fortress viewer is really neat. If you gave some specs on poly-count, unit-dimensions, etc. some of us 3-D modelers might be able to provide some content/assets to work with. (If using .3ds or .obj, that makes it easy.) Then again, maybe that needs to wait until the rendering engine you made is more optimized. It doesn't seem smooth compared to FPS games or newer RTSs with 3D like Supcom. Now if only something like this could be built onto DF itself and work as the UI during gameplay...
And about 60 hours of play + two small fortress : >
I actually abbandoned my fortress once, cos half of its dwellers died out of first cos a cook cooked all Plump Helmet Spawns into biscuits.... And the river have frozen. Half of the population during one winter!
Now i came back with 7 armed dwarfs and reclaimed it ; >
Thing's are going pretty well so far, any way.
Great thanks to Cpt'Duck for this avesome tutorial! Veeery usefull!: >
Maybe you should explain it a little better, in part 5 your fortress has suddenly skipped and is better, you showed us how to assign farm space, not how to build it.
No it doesn't. Part 5 explains how to build farms and then how to assign them. It doesnt talk about it being in the soil, but i know i explained that somewhere.
Ok after looking, i explained the soil thing in part 4.
I explained this in one of the first videos. The soil is the Z-level just under the grass. The walls are probably brownish, and it doesnt leave any rock when mined.
Your tutorials are great, my first fort (which ive built into solid marble) is going well, just nowhere easy to put farms, I'll go down a few levels then try.
Uh, remember that farms only work in the soil, aka the level under grass. If there isn't any grass or soil around, you need to start irrigation. For that pump water in a room, remove the water and build farms on the muddy floor.
a big thank you again Captain ^_^ looking foreword to see you new fortress don't know if i can ask a question here but i will anyways...
I build my fortress in a swampy area... so the water is "muddy" so my dwarf for some reason are traveling outside 3/4 of the map to get clean water from the river... i tryed bringing some water from the river down and even made walls and floors thinking it would be clean but its steel muddy... know of any way to clean water?
Building into the hill allows you to funnel enemies toward your entrance easier. On flat land, they have four (major) directions to come at you, but when you dig into a hill you can remove one of those directions easily by clearing ramps. Then you can force enemies into taking a route you want to the entrance using two walls. On a plain, you would need four walls to build a defense for the fort, then worry about funneling. Either way is fine, but the hill excavation is easier.
Yeah basicly. Allthough, if your a bit good in this game building 4 walls isn't that hard to do before any big force shows up, so it doesn't matter much.
Anyway don't do what i did here, at the end the true entrance of the fort that needed defending was way to far from my actual fort.
My problem with the hill excavating is that its just another restraint on what maps you can choose. So many of them have aquifers or arent forested as much as i'd like =[
I've been thinking about starting df for a while now, but these videos finally convinced me to start. And to read about boatmurded. It all went so wrong so awesomely.
no matter how much i love this game and i always say i prefer content over graphics, i would love to se this game in maybe an isometric hand drawn view like settlers or knights and merchants, or even better like dungeron keeper, bacause it is hard to visualise the fortress, but at least you can use that 3d dwarf programme every so often if you want a proper lok at your fortress.
oh and i must thank you for all of these vids without them i couldnt understand the game, so thank you.
Nice, I'm downloading that visualizer now.. time too see what my creation looks like!
Thanks again for all these vids!.. I've gone from completely lost to having at least some idea of how to make and run a fortress, and that's all thanks to you.

What so he just did as much as he could do with his fortress so he just abandoned it and started again? Is that how the game usually ends?
GlassPike 1 year ago
@GlassPike Yeah... exept theyre usually all dead by now.

So I just basiclly dig out a section under the grass and stick a farm there?
TotalVengance 3 years ago
Yeah. And do yourself a favor and watch part 5 again.
captnduck 3 years ago 3
Theirs loads of grass, could you clarify how i get to the soil? do is just go down a z-level then dig under the grass or what?

The only time your dwarves should need water anyway is if they're injured. Don't let them run out of booze!

thanks well i ad barrel production problems but its fixed now fortunately.
well thanks, and I'm looking foreword to see your new fortress Captn ;)

How come you build into the side of a hill and not just dig down on a flat map. wouldnt that give you more room to build fortifications?
