Please tell me if anyone knows, what is the drumhead on the top? It's by REMO I can see, but the surface doesn't seem "powderish" like the coated heads usually seem to be, but very smoothly white. I'd like to know 'cause I really dig the sound of it. :)
It's all good sound advice, but things like single stroke rolls and double stroke rolls are obvious—The name of the rudiment says it all. I'd have like it if he'd have discussed the way the hand controls the stick in more detail: That's where the really skill is. Anybody can figure RLRLRLRL or RRLLRRLL themselves.
I've said this before on here and I'll say it again...this video was key to developing advanced drumming skills for me. I was stuck on single strokes until this video taught me paradiddles and drumrolls. It also taught me how to achieve incredible speeds without pounding the skins. I owe more than 80% of my skills to this video. Thanks to whoever posted it, and even more, thanks to Ian Paice for enabling me to advance to the next level.
@chunter5100 Left-handed is left-handed...has no advantage over being right-handed, or vice-versa. It's only a disadvantage if your ambi-dextrous....Paice has even said that had he learned to play right-handed, he would have had wild independence in his hands.
I go to a video about drum technique and expect to see discussion on drum technique. Instead I see people putting down the drummer in the video because they think their favorite drummer is better. Ask yourself, do you think successful drummers actually give a shit how they compare to other successful drummers?
@jomanda32063 Which is all well and good . . . their drummer may be "better" at whatever it is that that particular drummer does, yet, I'll bet real money that if you sought out those "better" drummers and asked them what they thought of Ian Paice, they'd all immediately pull a Wayne's World and bow down and say "We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"
It's kinda like when countless drummers say they wish they were as good as Neil Peart, and Neil says he wishes he was as good as Buddy Rich.
@Metallica4Ever93 joey jordison is good in speed and for slipknot but in the drummer world he isnt good ain paice is a god so please have some of respect do you
Joey and Ian both have great technique. They're both great drummers. Ian isn't better than Joey, and Joey isn't better than Ian. They just have completely different styles.
OK, I'm a drummer at heart, 1st thing I played in a band, then went to bass because we needed one. I love watching/listening to drummers, especially left handed drummers! Just fascinated by them riding with their left hand and hitting the snare with their right. Found out that RINGO was left handed! But he played like a right hander! Now that is F*ckin' Impossible??? Like Paul playing right handed bass,or John and George playing left handed guitar!
@waynedanberry it aint that different tbf, cos paicey is right handed but plays left, if you are a really good drummer then you should be equal on your hands anyways
@waynedanberry Not impossible at all. There is no real hand-bias when you're just starting out - although it is easier to keep time with one's dominant hand. And I think everyone should play guitar "backwards" - fretwork seems more complicated than picking, and therefore better done with the dominant hand. I'm a lefty but I play drums and bass right-handed. It's also useful when I have to share instruments.
I find it interesting how his left and right hands are far from reflections of one another, yet he sounds so amazing! I really don't care about form as long as it sounds good, but I was under the impression that the best of the best would be more uptight about it. Thanks for the post!
@hibeeOz lol, he's the drummer of Deep Purple, one of the most famous bands in the world. And yes, Ian Paice is believed to be the best rudimental drummer in the world.
@TheDudeWithTheDrums sorry Dude,I know very very well who Paicey is and followed him with a passion since early 70s.Guess my humour is lost on some. Thanks for the reply anyhoo and keep rocking to Ians left handed rhythms.
@TheDudeWithTheDrums Yes, if you've just arrived on this planet and know nothing at all about rudimental drumming, then Mr. Paice would be considered a great rudimental player. My god, the ignorance on here is just mind boggling. He's in a popular band, it doesn't mean he's a great drummer. Not by a long shot. If you have no reference or something to compare it to, then yes, he's the best drummer in the world. Ignorance is bliss.
His open rolls aren't that good really... A good roll with double strokes should sound even. Every hit should be as hard as the previous ones. With his technique, they don't really. Well, almost. But it's not perfect. He's fast though.

This one video made all the difference in taking me up to the next level in drumming. I encourage anyone who wants to learn how to play drums to learn from four guys...John Bonham, Ginger Baker, Ian Paice, and Buddy Rich. Everything I know stems from watching these guys play, and especially Ian Paice. I can now play just about everything at the level he shows in this video. Granted, this likely isn't even half of what he knows.
Tbh "metal" druming doesnt tickle my fancy at all i think its a kinda crap and just relies on speed and Double bass which is lame not to say im totally against double bass just Listen to Fire ball sounds Great in that. And Ginger Bakers a great double bass player but yeah i prefer the more techinal side of drumming :)
It's my favourite drummer with John Bonham, but I prefer Ian's hands tecnique (as Bonham's foot tecnique). I've been to a couple of Ian Paice clinic and I can say he's also a great person, very down to heart and friendly
@keyblade09 Joey Jordison isn't even remotely close to Ian Paice on the level of skill. As far as I can tell, all Jordison has is speed and noise...no technical rudiments. Take away one of his bass drums and he's nothing.

@BllrGir14 i'm calm. i just had to let it out. remind me to stop posting cuz it doesn't matter anyway. check out his one-handed rolls solos. it's horrible cuz he doesn't hold the sticks right.
@BllrGir14 I don't know whether to laugh my ass off or verbally put you down until i'm blue in the face. Number one, he is a lefty. Number two, you just essentially called a defect on one of the greatest if not the greatest rock drummers....regardless if you hold the sticks the right or the wrong way (and he's holding them the right way), it is hard as fuck to play what he's playing with the kind of smoothness and natural flow he has. So either show us how skilled you are or know your place.

PEOPLE....people people people all your sexy drum lovers out there. PEOPLE I MADE A DRUM VIDEO COMPILATION I TOTALLY NEED COMMENTS ON IT, check my profile the first vid is Greatest 60 Drum Songs of Rock n Roll 60-44, if u love percussion please check it out
Are you lefty? Your a great drummer. I can tell. The only thing i can say is YOUR LEFT looks strongr than your right. See how your righ wrist gets stressed a bit at high tempos. Waiver in a bit, but you sound even. I would love to see ya on a ket
Ian Paice is left handed that's why! This guy had done more in his life then you have done in your bedroom, He has been the constant drummer for Deep Purple since 1968. Played on Whitesnakes best albums and so on...........
Billy Cobham, jack De Johnette,Lenny White,Vinnie Colauita, Chad Wakkerman, Terry Bozzio ,and Micheal Narada walden are all top drummers , & alive and well . They play jazz and fusion.
The man (Ian ) knows his history as well as the drums. The rudiments were used by drummers to communicate orders ( attack, retreat etc.) on the field of battle. The beauty of these rhythms, is that they do not need to be played really fast in order to be useful musically. You can incorporate almost right away in your playing.
chingon??? chingonsisisisimo!! es un deleite ver tocar a este maestro, que daría por verlo en vivo, cada que veo videos nuevos de ian paice me gusta mucho más su forma de tocar, SU ESTILO ES ÚNICO
Ian is the greatest drummer of all times. And whoever thinks something else is an asshole. Just listen to the bloody intros of ''pictures of home'' and 'fireball'' he plays double bass before even is created. He's without a doubt the greatest of all. And also Deep Purple is the greatest band of all times
i think y'all need to relax on his technique. as a snare player, nothing pisses me off worse than pinkys off the stick, etc, but bear in mind, hes not a snare player. he's a set player, and to be honest, people can do whatever technique they want on the kit
Ian has two snare drums mixed in one :D its so huge :D

Are you lefty? Your a great drummer. I can tell. The only thing i can say is YOUR LEFT looks strongr than your right. See how your righ wrist gets stressed a bit at high tempos. Waiver in a bit, but you sound even. I would love to see ya on a ket

Ian Paice is left handed that's why! This guy had done more in his life then you have done in your bedroom, He has been the constant drummer for Deep Purple since 1968. Played on Whitesnakes best albums and so on...........

Metalnumber204 2 years ago 3
so everyone who thinks Ian is not the best is an asshole? well that makes sense. he's great but dude, there are better drummers out there.
Schols117 2 years ago
Look up thomas lang, hes pretty good man.
dontfuckwithus 2 years ago
@Metalnumber204 Have you ever listened to some jazz players and like... other bands?
Damn I am one of those assholes, but this guy is really good though.
jcrm05 2 years ago
i think y'all need to relax on his technique. as a snare player, nothing pisses me off worse than pinkys off the stick, etc, but bear in mind, hes not a snare player. he's a set player, and to be honest, people can do whatever technique they want on the kit
