You are doing the same mistake in explaining the (gravitational) potential energy like many physics teachers : it's not the object that posseses the potential energy BUT the system {Earth-Object} in which object Earth and object m are in conservative interaction and may vary in relative distance... Otherwise how can it be understandable that a system of 2 electric charges possesses electric potential energy. Same question for a deformable spring...
