  • Honestly, I use a lens hood to look like I'm a professional. I don't even know what it does.

  • LOOOL THE FIRST TWO COMMENTS ARE HILARIOUS :D

  • your hair looks like my pubes if i don't shave for a really long time

  • hahahaha...

  • Best explanation ever.

  • Sorry, i didn't listen to a word you were saying, i was just staring at your hair.

  • Wow! Look at that psychic hair.

  • Make sure you are not under a tree if you're not supposed to be under it.

  • 0:34 WTFunction...!

  • Great basic tip... Very informational.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Welcome back, Mr. Kotter.

  • If I use an external flash + a hood at a party, will that work? Or should I remove the lens hood, assuming there will be pretty dark?

  • @skidrowdie You don't need a lens hood with a flash if it's dark you'll need as much light as you can get and stray light might just lighten the picture up a bit :)

  • Cool infromation...

  • Very informative. Thank you.

  • very well explained

  • im not a bush this is real LMFAO!

  • I shaded my eyes and you poped WOW!

  • thanks for the explanation.....but i really use it for the coolness effect

  • EBAY

  • the reason why i bought this is to make my camera look much cooler! HAHA

  • i thought it was just random extra plastic, i threw it out....

  • Lots of purple fringing on your hair!

  • I have learned so much from your videos. I am a Newbie, so I appreciate the straightforwardness of them. Thank you

  • Jared is the man. Love the videos. Humor with real world perception and understanding of photography. I'll never read a book again. Great hands on teaching.

  • Don't be silly. Lens hoods are only used to make your camera look AMAZING AND HUGE AND LIKE A SASSY PRO!

  • @iJarrp dude u suck just go n die

  • It will be better if you make a sample photo with hood and without.

  • I agree & always use a lens hood indoors or out.

One thing when using a flash & lens hood indoors is to make sure you are @ least 4ft away from your subject or you will get a shadow [unwanted] effect. (Found this out the hard way)

    Great tips as always though!

  • Buy a canon with a 24-70 f2.8L instead, that bitch barely flares when shooting straight into the sun

  • @FlyingRubberGuard

Even on a top lens I would use a lenshood!

You get even lenshoods [or can buy .. evil evil canon] on super wide lenses. now when talking about lens hoods ever seen the lens hoods on kitlenses.. those are like mini skirts!

  • WTF, so strange without intro music and the "FRO KNOWS, PHOTOOOO... Dot COM"

  • @IIRockstarrxX i also miss SEE YA

  • Make sure you are not under a tree if you're not supposed to be under it xD xD

  • should i use a lens hood if i use flash?

  • @elr2141979 no coz it will give you the shadows on the pic of the hood

  • Hello Jared, do the lens hoods from third party companies work as good as the Canon ones? they look similar, but is there any different? what do you recommend?

  • @TauBuuVuong 3rd party lens hoods designed for that specific lens, are generally just as good. Just look at them both (on eBay for example), and if the 3rd party is the same shape/size, then yes. If the hood is generic and meant for any lens, no it's not going to be as effective, and may vignette the lens.

  • don't you dislike how some kit lenses don't come with one.. or have a joke of one. The lenshood on my kitlens was like, well you know miniskirts right, and girls wearing them.. including girls that really shouldn't. Yeah a lenshood that wasn't that much better then wearing a belt!

tamron though did bring a very nice petal style one with their 28-75. Trust me.. very useful!

  • you made me realise i need one thanks

  • How effective would a hood be on say, the Nikkor 12-24? It's a really wide lens so there's not much 'light blocking' it does

  • @ajayalmighty If it saves the lens in a fall, pretty useful.

  • this would have been really informative if you took 2 pictures of the same thing, one without and one with the lens hood.

  • aren't you in the LMFAO group ?? lol

  • @Boodhunnilesh He's not black though, so no.

  • @Boodhunnilesh no, he has his picture taken with that guy though!

  • I like how cameras look with lens hood... It looks COOL!!!

  • Well I got small question for you Jared. If you are using ND filter so then lens hood isn't necessary?

  • Thanks this helped. By the way, nice fro.

  • nice

  • you look like that dude from lmfao. thx for info, it's exactly what I was looking for!

  • can lens filters be as good as lens hoods? i like the idea because it keeps the actual lens itself clean.

  • @xihakuix It keeps the lens clean, but degrades the image. The flat glass adds reflections, and the dirt you are keeping off the lens, is there on the filter, still in the photo. I use them when I need to, shooting a the beach, in the rain etc. A lens hood on the other hand generally keeps fingers/tree branches and things off your lens, protects it in a fall, and improves the image, by keeping out stray light. You can of course, use both a hood and filter.

  • His hair too, is for the flare like the hood for the lens!

  • @ciccuzz are you asking which lens hood or which lens? Because you get the hood based of what lens you buy. You cant just used any hood.

If you asking about a lens, it depends what you want to shoot... I would stick to the lens it comes with until you have a better idea.

  • I use a lens hood because to make my lens look bigger:L

  • thanks dude , it was helpful

  • I'm getting a T3i soon, this was helpful, thank you.

  • My wife got her hood pierced :)

  • brilliant thanks

  • not gonna be as blown out *runs hand through fro* LOL 2:25

  • I only use a lens hood to look cool ; )

  • @dude2106 xD i bought one for that exact reason!

  • @dude2106 me too :)

  • I like you. You sir, have earned yourself a new subscriber.

  • Thanks for the info! Very good, I'm learning more and more everyday!

  • WHAT THE FUNCTION!!!!

  • would a Precision Design ET-60 Lens Hood for Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 ... work on a canon rebel t3i?

  • Shall i get more info's on hoods? I recently bought a lens hood, for canon 600D, 18-135mm, but when i fix it in, the edges are covered with the hood's edges. What to do?

  • This is why you should have paid the licensed electrician to wire up that new 220 outlet for your dryer.... then perhaps your hair would not.... errr ... yeah. Good explanation though, Sparky! :-)

  • Heh man that tree thing is sooo deeeeeeep; oh mannnnnnnnn!

  • Thumbs up if you clicked on this vid just because of the HAIR :D good tips, btw

  • a very good optical illusion: if you watch this video for at least 2 minutes you wont notice his silly hair anymore.

  • @8375705 I'm more and more inclined to suspect that fro 'blows' photo to a surprisingly high degree.

  • It pops like POW

  • Abusive usage of the term "vignetting" all the more when you realize that some people try to get just that instead of avoid it.

It can not even be considered an alternative for a vignetting effect as it blocks any colour effect from beyond the hood, which only acts as a shadow.

As most of these videos, not well thought out, technically questionable and rather in tune to personal and subjective standards..

    A/K/A Bad teacher...

  • You are to funny...I had to subscribe and thanks so much for your help!

  • lol "what the f....unction"

  • Jared,

Do you know if there is a lens hood made for the Nikon 50mm f/1.8?

  • You are awesome. I just subscribed! Thanks for the explanation.

  • I didnt Know Bizzy Bone was a camera expert also

  • "What the fu-nction.."

Thought you were about to say "what the fuck.." Lol

  • i clicked on this video cos i saw his hair :P

  • First time I've seen you, so like everybody else I'll get it out of the way.

HOLY SHIT LOOK AT HIS HAIR.

    Anyway, nice vid. Very informative.

  • no one needs to no this

  • As a novice photographer, I appreciate that you took the time to explain this so well. Thanks.

  • scoutthedoggie sent me here :)

  • @ch606 We dont care

  • @TheSpiikki you don't care but apparently, 3 people do! ;)

  • i like your hair

  • "it doesn't make it look blown out" *rubs hair back*

  • This was the first Jared Polin video I ever saw, I didnt really listen, all I could think was "that is the coolest fro I've ever seen!"... and then I subscribed.

  • first time someone explain somthing and i did undrstood very clear

    good work and thanks you

  • Ok, so in a nut shell your saying that a lens hood blocks unnecessary light? :)

  • @0BoxHead0 a lens hood blocks the flare, the light reflection you dont want to have on your picture. Ex (sunny day) : wear sunglasses, look around . Now wear sunglasses, + a hat and look around. You see better because the sun does not hit your glasses directly; vision is clear ;)

  • Dude, just stumbled on this. First - love the hair. Second, appreciate the tips as a newbie photographer. Cheers.

  • Yeah, it's easy when you have your own tree with you on you head all the time... :P

  • Thanks for your tips & thoughts.. I greatly appreciate it

  • very helpful,tnx....

  • this video taught me alot...i never knew WTF meant "what the function"

  • thanks! i knew i didn't waste my money on the lens hood.

  • NIKON-CANON

  • "So there you go, lens hood, have a good one."

  • At night, the lens hood blocks my AF-assist light so autofocusing is a pain :( are hoods useful at night anyways?

  • @Barronlroth well actually yes. If you re considering shooting outdoors, in the street for example, you obviously don't have the sun in your lens but you got a lot of other stuff going on at night like road lights or if you live in Vegas all the big fancy shiny boards etc. So I'd say yes! you should use it even at night. Now if it's a real pain and cant do with it well don't.. But thats up to you.

  • @bendingsnake so long as the lens hood is wide enough. Example the Canon 18-135mm lens has a viewing range from 29mm-216mm. If the hood is less than this diameter than you will see vignetting in your photos.

  • @JaredPolin I'm looking on ebay for a len's hood for an 18-135mm canon lens with a diameter of 0.67mm and I have seen that ones from Hong Kong get you on the shipping ,but the price is like 3 dollar's then thier are the ones with free shipping from the usa for like 5 dollar's does that mean it's a nock off and if it is does it matter?I know this is an older video ,but please respond anybody.

  • Easy explaination Jared, thanks man!

  • Thanks for the explanation :) nice hair btw!

  • Have you been struck by lightning..?

  • Didn't know you can also use the lens hood indoors......thanks for the tip Jared :)

  • ever think about getting cornrows?

  • A lens hood reduces the amount of light hitting the lens from all directions.

Once light hits the lens from other angles, that light bounces all over the place that ends up making the picture look hazy.

  • Would using a CPL negate the need for a lens hood? Or is it a 'horses for courses' kind of situation?

  • what is lens filter?

  • so thats why this guy has a fro

  • so your hear is like a tree

  • great words! go ahead man!

  • This one time, I was under a tree. Then, I started thinking maybe I wasn't supposed to be under the tree. So, I moved... then I wasn't under the tree anymore.

  • Fro Knows Photo Dot Com sounds much cooler BTW!

  • THANSK YOU FOR THIS DETAILED EXPLANATION!!! I was wondering wat lens hoods were for but i coudlnt find any videos!! I Love you!! (no homo) lol

    thanks again

  • I stared at his hair the whole time. But good video!

  • I love lens hoods. I bought a used Quantaray 70-300mm f/4-5.6 telemacro lens for my 35mm canon Rebel. It is designed with a bayonet mount for lens hoods, but I prefer screw mount hoods. I just have to remember to put my filters on first.

  • Did you use a Fish eye to shot this ? lol

  • Just started watching your videos and they are very educational, but I have one question. In this video you stated "Make sure you are not under a tree if your not suppose to." But in a later video you stated "It's better to ask for forgiveness than permission."

I think you're more correct in the latter statement,as I once caught a fire in Atlantic City on video by standing where I wasn't suppose to be. LOL

Feel free to critique it on my channel,it's from a few cameras ago.

  • I almost feel like I'm the one that said, "Oh yeah, lens hoods are for protecting the glass if you run into something." But, I'm at home watching a YouTube clip. I don't know anything about lens hoods. But the next time I see a camera nerd, I'll be sure to run my mouth and then let him correct me.

  • I think there are general lens hoods that aren't custom to one camera or one camera "series", but they are prone to being low quality (or really expensive) and they need to be the correct size for the camera.

  • can you tell me why you don't have canon always nikon ? what makes you love nikon that much >

  • SO PAINFULL

  • sorry a little question: when you do the shave, don't u find any hairs in ur hands? ahha

  • u don't have to use lens hood coz ur head is like tree man u got that shade from ur hear

  • tight hair man. you look like that painter guy that was on tv a long time ago. hahah :)

  • Should have a series of videos and call them "What the function!?"

  • " I am not a tree, I am not a bush, This is real. " HAHAH

  • I'm no expert on lens hoods but: adding a lens hood doesn't make it look like you're shooting in overcast light, or in the shade of a tree. It prevents flare. If you shoot in harsh noon sun it's still gonna look like shit with or without a lens hood. Lens hoods provide better contrast and reduced flare... that's it.

  • LOL, I thought you said "what the f*ck-tion" in 0:35

    Thanks for the upload

  • thanks dude i was wondering this for along time

  • I have a decent question for you, since you say you use your hoods at any time, no matter what. Now I know you don't know Canon - however, I have a Canon EF 17-40mm, the lens hood - as far I've read doesn't do anything, since it's so short and wide, would you use it. Or not ? Just askin', yo.

  • <<<<<<<<<<<<< It pops like POW <<<<<<<<<<<<

  • can you use a polarizer with the lens hood? can i buy a hood for my camera? or does hoods only come with certain lens?

  • @coolguy701 You can use filters with a lens hood. That's a very standard thing to do.

ALWAYS use a lens hood. He kinda dismisses why you would, but the fact that it can save you from dinging your glass is enough of a reason to use it. It does help with glare, but that's usually not significant.

  • Fuck, you have awesome hair.

  • what the f***

    ***=function

  • Jared do you have a flicker?

  • It would be great to have photo examples of what you (nicely) explain ;)

  • when lens hood are designed, is it for full Frame bodies in mind or for Crop bodies?

  • @xiongba It's designed for the lens. However, if you use a crop lens on a FF body, the body will usually auto crop and blow up the image like you're using a crop body, so it's no different.

  • lollll "I'm not a tree......" HAHAHAHA!!

  • Really helpful, great example like the eye, really good (: thanks for the help (:

  • are you using fisheye here?

  • I love your videos....very informative and love your humor. :0)

  • Lol I thought it's a human tree.

  • You are the greatest instruction video maker on all of the internet.

  • Comment removed

  • Here's the problem that I have everytime though. I shoot a lot of landscape and use a polarizing filter a LOT. With a lens hood, it's damn near impossible to turn it with out difficulty, what now? I like the idea of a lens hood, but it's keeps getting in the way, any suggestions?

  • @pi620 when im using a lens hood i basically just stick one finger into the hood and turn it. yes it is awkward but it gets the job done. i learned this from a friend whos been shooting his whole life. i know...groundbreaking stuff...

  • Thanks alot! Nice review!!

  • Ok for the millionth time, your hair is EPIC

  • WOW 0 dislikes you're the best dude..nice hair BTW!

  • @MohammadAsiri you jinxed the video. somebody hit the dislike button in the week since your comment.

  • I have a Canon PowerShot SX10 IS. Is there a lens hood I can purchase for this camera? is it worth it?

  • can you please help me i have a lens hood on my lens its a 55-200 lens and it fits perfectly on and the pics are great but it wont fit on my 18-55 lens it is the same diametre 0.55mm but the 18-55 lens has a ring thing around the end kind of like hard foam if you can help please tell me thankss.

  • @scuzznightrunner lens hoods are different for each lens they are designed specifically for the lens they are meant to be used on.

  • @JaredPolin aw right ok thanks very much dude.

  • @scuzznightrunner There is a special hood for you 18-55.

  • @scuzznightrunner are you stupid...watch the video. he talk about that ! noob...idiot

  • Awesome!!! Quantum Photography. I'm under a tree but I'm not under a tree.

  • Funny: When he states "they're not gonna be as blown out," he runs his fingers through his superb blown out hair... Cool.

  • Best lens hood explanation on the internet.

  • simple yet VERy clear explanation dude...FTW!
