@skidrowdie You don't need a lens hood with a flash if it's dark you'll need as much light as you can get and stray light might just lighten the picture up a bit :)
Jared is the man. Love the videos. Humor with real world perception and understanding of photography. I'll never read a book again. Great hands on teaching.
One thing when using a flash & lens hood indoors is to make sure you are @ least 4ft away from your subject or you will get a shadow [unwanted] effect. (Found this out the hard way)
You get even lenshoods [or can buy .. evil evil canon] on super wide lenses. now when talking about lens hoods ever seen the lens hoods on kitlenses.. those are like mini skirts!
@elr2141979 - When using a flash & lens hood indoors is to make sure you are @ least 4ft away from your subject or you will get a shadow [unwanted] effect. (Found this out the hard way)
Hello Jared, do the lens hoods from third party companies work as good as the Canon ones? they look similar, but is there any different? what do you recommend?
@TauBuuVuong 3rd party lens hoods designed for that specific lens, are generally just as good. Just look at them both (on eBay for example), and if the 3rd party is the same shape/size, then yes. If the hood is generic and meant for any lens, no it's not going to be as effective, and may vignette the lens.
don't you dislike how some kit lenses don't come with one.. or have a joke of one. The lenshood on my kitlens was like, well you know miniskirts right, and girls wearing them.. including girls that really shouldn't. Yeah a lenshood that wasn't that much better then wearing a belt!
tamron though did bring a very nice petal style one with their 28-75. Trust me.. very useful!
@xihakuix It keeps the lens clean, but degrades the image. The flat glass adds reflections, and the dirt you are keeping off the lens, is there on the filter, still in the photo. I use them when I need to, shooting a the beach, in the rain etc. A lens hood on the other hand generally keeps fingers/tree branches and things off your lens, protects it in a fall, and improves the image, by keeping out stray light. You can of course, use both a hood and filter.
Shall i get more info's on hoods? I recently bought a lens hood, for canon 600D, 18-135mm, but when i fix it in, the edges are covered with the hood's edges. What to do?
This is why you should have paid the licensed electrician to wire up that new 220 outlet for your dryer.... then perhaps your hair would not.... errr ... yeah. Good explanation though, Sparky! :-)
This was the first Jared Polin video I ever saw, I didnt really listen, all I could think was "that is the coolest fro I've ever seen!"... and then I subscribed.
@0BoxHead0 a lens hood blocks the flare, the light reflection you dont want to have on your picture. Ex (sunny day) : wear sunglasses, look around . Now wear sunglasses, + a hat and look around. You see better because the sun does not hit your glasses directly; vision is clear ;)
@Barronlroth well actually yes. If you re considering shooting outdoors, in the street for example, you obviously don't have the sun in your lens but you got a lot of other stuff going on at night like road lights or if you live in Vegas all the big fancy shiny boards etc. So I'd say yes! you should use it even at night. Now if it's a real pain and cant do with it well don't.. But thats up to you.
@bendingsnake so long as the lens hood is wide enough. Example the Canon 18-135mm lens has a viewing range from 29mm-216mm. If the hood is less than this diameter than you will see vignetting in your photos.
@JaredPolin I'm looking on ebay for a len's hood for an 18-135mm canon lens with a diameter of 0.67mm and I have seen that ones from Hong Kong get you on the shipping ,but the price is like 3 dollar's then thier are the ones with free shipping from the usa for like 5 dollar's does that mean it's a nock off and if it is does it matter?I know this is an older video ,but please respond anybody.
This one time, I was under a tree. Then, I started thinking maybe I wasn't supposed to be under the tree. So, I moved... then I wasn't under the tree anymore.
I love lens hoods. I bought a used Quantaray 70-300mm f/4-5.6 telemacro lens for my 35mm canon Rebel. It is designed with a bayonet mount for lens hoods, but I prefer screw mount hoods. I just have to remember to put my filters on first.
Just started watching your videos and they are very educational, but I have one question. In this video you stated "Make sure you are not under a tree if your not suppose to." But in a later video you stated "It's better to ask for forgiveness than permission."
I think you're more correct in the latter statement,as I once caught a fire in Atlantic City on video by standing where I wasn't suppose to be. LOL
Feel free to critique it on my channel,it's from a few cameras ago.
I almost feel like I'm the one that said, "Oh yeah, lens hoods are for protecting the glass if you run into something." But, I'm at home watching a YouTube clip. I don't know anything about lens hoods. But the next time I see a camera nerd, I'll be sure to run my mouth and then let him correct me.
I think there are general lens hoods that aren't custom to one camera or one camera "series", but they are prone to being low quality (or really expensive) and they need to be the correct size for the camera.
I'm no expert on lens hoods but: adding a lens hood doesn't make it look like you're shooting in overcast light, or in the shade of a tree. It prevents flare. If you shoot in harsh noon sun it's still gonna look like shit with or without a lens hood. Lens hoods provide better contrast and reduced flare... that's it.
I have a decent question for you, since you say you use your hoods at any time, no matter what. Now I know you don't know Canon - however, I have a Canon EF 17-40mm, the lens hood - as far I've read doesn't do anything, since it's so short and wide, would you use it. Or not ? Just askin', yo.
@coolguy701 You can use filters with a lens hood. That's a very standard thing to do.
ALWAYS use a lens hood. He kinda dismisses why you would, but the fact that it can save you from dinging your glass is enough of a reason to use it. It does help with glare, but that's usually not significant.
@xiongba It's designed for the lens. However, if you use a crop lens on a FF body, the body will usually auto crop and blow up the image like you're using a crop body, so it's no different.

@pi620 when im using a lens hood i basically just stick one finger into the hood and turn it. yes it is awkward but it gets the job done. i learned this from a friend whos been shooting his whole life. i know...groundbreaking stuff...
can you please help me i have a lens hood on my lens its a 55-200 lens and it fits perfectly on and the pics are great but it wont fit on my 18-55 lens it is the same diametre 0.55mm but the 18-55 lens has a ring thing around the end kind of like hard foam if you can help please tell me thankss.
Honestly, I use a lens hood to look like I'm a professional. I don't even know what it does.

@ciccuzz are you asking which lens hood or which lens? Because you get the hood based of what lens you buy. You cant just used any hood.
If you asking about a lens, it depends what you want to shoot... I would stick to the lens it comes with until you have a better idea.

Abusive usage of the term "vignetting" all the more when you realize that some people try to get just that instead of avoid it.
It can not even be considered an alternative for a vignetting effect as it blocks any colour effect from beyond the hood, which only acts as a shadow.
As most of these videos, not well thought out, technically questionable and rather in tune to personal and subjective standards..

A lens hood reduces the amount of light hitting the lens from all directions.
Once light hits the lens from other angles, that light bounces all over the place that ends up making the picture look hazy.

@scuzznightrunner lens hoods are different for each lens they are designed specifically for the lens they are meant to be used on.
