  • Always loved "Confidence" as the CBS NFL theme dating back to the mid-60s. Anyone remember when they had choral signing the the song? Wish someone would release those old sports themes from the 50s &'60s!

  • This was Frank Gifford's last year at CBS. Roone Arledge wanted Gifford for Monday Night Football but Gifford had one more year on his CBS contract. So Arledge used Keith Jackson for one season until Gifford was available Jackson didn't know his selection was for only one season and was very bitter about about being replaced.

  • I loved this theme since I started watching the NFL on CBS in 1964. Is it possible that anyone has a clean version?

  • The old NFL theme song, "Confidence", is a wonderfully uplifting piece of music; one of the few tunes you don't mind that you can't get out of your head. Have loved that one since I was a kid watching football on Sunday mornings. Better days.

  • the announcers, who is that man sitting on Frank Giffords Lap? thats innappropiate,

  • 1:21 Glieber should have gone to a different barber. He looks like he would have inspired the haircuts of the typical TV nerd character.

  • one difference i noticed right away is announcers no longer sit on each other laps in the booth................

  • I remember this song as a kid. I was 7.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Sounds like a college football theme music.

  • The games where played out-doors which made it real football.

  • I used to hear that theme song every Sunday afternoon as a youth. Wow, now that takes me back ...

  • My fondest memory of that stadium was 1/2/95.

  • Sucky camera angle for a game even at this time; CBS NFC farewell video showed a clip of a game in black and white that wasn't curved like that; this is just amatuerism at it's worst and a flip of the bird to viewers in Detroit. They're basically saying "So you made the playoffs in the first time in like, ever. Big f****** deal, we don't give a shit because guess what, this is the Lions we're talking about and no one is going to remember because you're going to lose anyway.

  • You can take that all the way to the bank. Stuff that up your pipe and smoke it." Jerks.

  • @bakerandbaker1 the curve is because of an extreme wide angle lens.

  • It was still a shit one to use.

  • @bakerandbaker1 Surely that fisheye lens wasn't used for the actual game itself? I would have to assume it was just for that little "artistic" sweep from the field to the booth announcers in the intro.

  • Even if that was the intention, it was poorly executed.

  • I don't know what it was that made it so memorable back then, but that theme song playing in my mind cheers me up on my darkest days.

  • Dallas Rangers 5, Detroit Tigers 0.

Were there any Home Runs in that game? Tom Landry did say that he wanted to see Dallas play Baseball Score-like games. To think that 2 weeks before, those same "Rangers" went to Cleveland's Municipal Stadium and beat the Indians 6-2.

  • @Jiltedin2007 Too bad Kaline, Cash, or Freehan couldn't go deep. Rare for Mickey Lolich to be on the losing end of a shutout. :- )

  • @15BartStarrFan LOL, I guess 1968 was simply "A Flash in the Pan" for the Detroit Tigers. Funny, I thought that Denny McClain would have pitched that game.

  • @Jiltedin2007 Close! Recall Gibson outdueled McLain in Game 1 of the W.S. that year by tossing a 4 - 0 shutout.

  • @15BartStarrFan Bob Gibson was really throwing bullets! Whoever Ranger Pitcher that was pitching that game got some serious run support and made it stand up. Next week when they went to San Francisco, They also locked down the Giants until the final Innings. Willie McCovey went deep in a losing cause.

  • A field goal and a sack of Greg Landry in the end zone. Dallas picked off Landry late in the goal, Charlie Sanders throwing his helmet down in frustration. Same old Lions, same old sorry ass Lions.

  • @hoosierlooker Incorrect. Bill Munson replaced Greg Landry late in the 4th quarter and led a drive down to the Cowboys 29-yard line with 35 seconds to play. Facing a 3rd & 10, Munson tried to hit WR Earl McCullouch over the middle near the end zone but McCullouch could only get one hand on the ball and tipped it into the hands of Cowboys DB Mel Renfro. As Renfro was returning the interception, the TV camera caught McCullouch throwing his helmet in disgust while the play was still alive.

  • The song "Confidence" written in 1964 for a musical play called "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" (based on the Thurber story). It was an off-Broadway production that ran for over 90 performances, with music by composer Leon Carr (lyrics by Mort Shuman). An original cast recording LP was released at the time, and re-released in 1973 by Columbia Special Products. The song in the play is not an instrumental, like this version, but sung by several cast members to a meek Mitty to buck him up.

  • The lions will be back in the playoffs again the next time its the '70s. in the 2070's!

  • I've been looking for this NFL theme song forever! My kids were little, and they'd line up on their knees in front of the TV and 'lead' the band with their little arms, and sing..."What ta da, da da da da da, what ta da, da da da da da..... . We really missed it when they changed songs. : (

  • Hard to believe we're watching the opening from a game in Dallas that was two stadiums ago.

  • I know the video is a little grainy but it sure looks like frank Glieber is sitting on Frank Gifford's lap. Tell me I'm wrong.

  • @buck62sugar You're not wrong.

  • @buck62sugar - I'd like to say you're wrong ~ but I honestly can't tell ...

    LOL!

  • I still can't believe I am seeing this. I remember this game! I was 12, and lived and breathed the NFL. I am still searching for the CBS intro to the 1967 season, where the song is the same, "Confidence", but it is played by a sort of Marching Band and is live action, not animated. Pained faces, Johnny U being hammered, (or was it Frank Ryan?). I cannot find it anywhere. GREAT POST, THIS!

  • @meridethtohayes And don't forget the segment showing the famous Tom Landry "Excedrin Headache #99" bemoaned expression on the sidelines right after Dallas offensive lineman Jim Boeke was called for an illegal procedure in the waning moments of Green Bay's 34 - 27 victory in the 1966 NFL Championship game.

  • @15BartStarrFan Yeah, man. Boy, do I remember THAT. Actually, I became a Cowboy Fan that game. The Ice Bowl almost killed me. There is NOTHING More Beautiful than seeing a green football field with the Packers colors and the Cowboy colors. It seems like there is something magical about every game they play. Congrats on being World Champions Again! With half your team in the hospital, you guys Did The Impossible, and it was a glorious thing to see. I hope BF comes back to you can sack him again!

  • @meridethtohayes Funny thing is if, in fact, the player lockout continues it probably will work to the Packers advantage because: 1) the type of injuries hitting the key players were the type that need longer rehabilitation, and 2) the Packers are still one of the youngest squads, thus one year of aging with no play will not hurt them one bit. Regarding the original "Confidence" NFL theme song that began playing before the 1966-67 games, I agree it is VERY hard to find.

  • @15BartStarrFan it wont favor the Packers.

the lockout favors really no one like it use to back in the 80s when the Redskins always would win in a lockout year.

The Packers squad that won the Sb recently was lucky to face the teams they did including the SB, it was a weak football year where it was anyones title like SB43 and SB40 was.

  • It's weird hearing "Detroit Lions" and "playoffs" in the same sentence

  • @MrCavalier82 You must be too young to have remembered, but back in the day the Lions had some good teams.

  • @rayjr62 I am 28 years old, so I am too young to remember the 1992 NFC Championship game between the Lions and the 'skins, and I can barely remember the team's last playoff game in 1997

  • 1970,The Year of the Baltimore Colts! The Colt defense dominated in the AFC Playoffs and The Super Bowl.

  • I remember this game very well. I was in the eighth grade. This was one of the greatest defensive battles in N.F.L. history. The Lions drove deep into Dallas territory, but Altie Taylor fumbled after a hard hit. Late in the game Detroit's defense stopped Dallas on a great goal line stand. But Greg Landry was sacked in the end zone on the Lions next offensive series. Trailing 5-0, Earl McCullough caught a bomb from Bill Munson. But after that Mel Renfro intercepted to save Dallas.

  • @fairnorth And ironically Renfro got the interception when McCullouch reached a slightly overthrown Munson pass and tipped it right into Renfro's waiting hands. Frustrated, McCullouch proceeded to rip his helmet off and toss it up field as Renfro was making his return. Very exciting ending to what was otherwise a very boring non-offensive game. Munson was within an inch of upsetting the Cowboys.

  • What's weirder? A game with a final score of 5-0? Or the fact that the Lions made it to the playoffs? with a good defense much less?

  • @dave4248 The Lions were a very good team, then.

  • @dave4248 interesting enough, if Cowboys win vs Giants, we will see a Lions vs Cowboys wild card match.

  • This is a watered-down version of the original, which began with a drum corps intro, and then a referee's whistle, before the main tune started. Anybody have a recording of THAT?

  • This was one of the last games Frank Gifford did for CBS. The following season he moved to ABC to do play-by-play for Monday Night Football.

  • Wow! The Lions were actually in the playoffs.

  • I remember this theme song on Sundays when the NFL was on. I think it was way back in the late 60's when i was only 5 years old. Does anyone know when the NFL first used this song to introduce a game? And what network was it on? I know this is 1970, but i thought this song was used before 1970. Am i right?

  • @eewright2001 Yes, this theme tune was used prior to 1970 although with some slight differences. Also some of the highlights in the small box was different as there would be no AFL teams in the pre-1970 version. I recall the pre-1970 version ending with Tom Landry's pained grimace from the 1966 champ game after Dandy Don tossed a pick to Green Bays Tom Brown in the end zone.

  • @rjcpacker Actually the famous Tom Landry grimace occurred a play or two prior to Brown's interception. It occurred when right tackle Jim Boeke was called for an illegal procedure penalty that negated a Dallas first down and pushed the Cowboys five yards back to the Green Bay 12.

The original NFL on CBS theme song started in the 1967 season.

  • The NFL...brought to you by automobile companies manufacturing cars the size of ocean liners. Cars that get 8 miles to the gallon. Ah, the good ol' days.

  • Frank Glieber....the great voice of the Dallas Cowboys back in the 1960s. I remember him well. Yesterday I took a tour of the Cooper Aerobics Center in Dallas and was reminded that back in 1985 Mr. Glieber was jogging at the Cooper Center and suffered a fatal heart attack. He was only 51. His tragic and untimely death had one benefit, I think...it spurred more research into the causes and prevention of heart disease. He will never be forgotten in Dallas, Texas. RIP.

  • An unforgettable theme song with a neat melody. Pat Summerall did a good job as the voice-over introducing the telecast.

  • i was 13 years old then......time flies.

  • The most boring playoff game ever. 5 points = A field goal and a safety. LAME

  • I hated when the Cotton Bowl switched over to Astro Turf.

  • Lokks like the Texas(Dallas) Rangers gave it to the Tigers in this "One Game Playoff", 5-0.

  • @Jiltedin2007 You must mean the Washington Senators. ;-)

  • @mdumas43073 That's right! The Washington Senators didn't move to Arlington until 1971.

  • I *lived* for this song each Sunday!

  • i remember that song like it was yesterday!

  • The Lions made it to a playoff game?

  • I ment to say cotton bowl

  • @btillman do you remember when the cowboys played at the cottonball on the fifty yard line they allways had one of two things a two bar cowboy helmet or the cowboy riding the little horse emblem

  • @haroldcambel dont forget jack witaker on the afl games on nbc you had charlie jones and curt goudy

  • @brickchruch Jack Whitaker was with CBS during that time, so it's highly doubtful he called any AFL games.

  • @Market42Fan I said remember him i know he only did nfc games i said Charley Jones and Curt Goudy did afc games

  • CBS (and NBC too for the AFL broadcasts) had so many great announcers back then. One of my favorites with CBS was Ray Scott.

  • hahahah I was born that year,,,mannnn

  • WOW, What a flashback. Frank Glieber for one. But I often brag to folks that I was a Cowboy fan when they played in the Cotton Bowl. Does anyone else remember the Cowboys in the Cotton Bowl and how they server hot Dr. Pepper in a styrofoam cup with a slice of lemmon. No place but Texas.

  • @btillman99 LOVE HOT DR. P! I have a Life Magazine from the JFK assasination with an ad for hot Dr. P in it!

  • Thanks for this. Please post some more of this broadcast? Please?

  • thanks...

  • meridethtohayes , youve got that right dandy don to bullit bob

  • Being a cowboy fan at the time it was a great game de George Andrey sacked Greg Landrey for a safty and Mike Clark kicked a field goal

  • I was very young, but someone said the score of this game ended up 5 to 0. I think I remember that silly score but I don't remember watching the game... Must have been a real "barn-burner", lol. Poor Lions fans. Six measly! pts. away from their biggest game since who can remember when?

  • @GaryHMan

We got our revenge in 1991, 38-6!!!

  • @dfwgator3 The next year in Detroit it was 37-3..Cowboys..

  • @TheAmbassador11 We then beat Dallas in Dallas the next year in OT.

  • @GaryHMan It was 5-0 Cowboys

  • @GaryHMan Yes, Dallas won this game 5-0. The Rangers really walloped the Tigers in this one. LOL

  • @GaryHMan Yup, there must have been about 30 punts in this game. It was 3-0 til late in the game when Greg Landry got sacked in the end zone for a safety.

  • @dancinkindofguy Well, at least there was more scoring than a soccer game... Er, wait - 5 points, but only two scores, so I guess not really. lol.

  • @GaryHMan I know it's been 5 months since you posted this message, but I'll respond anyway. I was in high school when this game was played, and being a

Dallas Cowboys fan, of course I remember watching the whole game. I think

Dallas got knocked out of the playoffs the next week.

  • @BRUC2016 Then that was quite the punting clinic you were treated too, eh?

  • @GaryHMan All I can recall is the strange 5-0 score and that this was a great

defensive battle. And being a Cowboys fan, a win was a win, no matter

how boring the game. I'm sure the rest of America dozed off at halftime.

  • @BRUC2016 If it was 1970, it means that the Cowboys played the Colts in the Super Bowl. Not exactly a brilliant game there either.

  • @GaryHMan Lions - 76 yds rushing, 92 passing, 7 first downs - one of the most pitiful performances by an offense in postseason history :) The Cowboys had 209 yds on the ground but only 38 through the air. The Lions were killed by 3 fumbles and an interception, while the Cowboys were plagued by penalties. The other game that Saturday, the first ever AFC playoff game, had the Colts over the Bengals 17-0. Not a great day for offense!

  • @antimatterXXXIII Appreciate the info -- Others have reminded of some of the names - all good stuff. For example Detroit's QB Greg Landry, bless his 'eart, but he was one of those who darn near ran for as many yards as he passed for, if I may take license with slight exaggeration.

  • Dick Stockton is still doing football for CBS, 40 years later.

  • I would give Just About Anything for a copy of the CBS into to NFL games for the 1967 Season!

I forgot all about thatSpinning thing! That's right!

    Thanks for posting this stuff!!!

  • @meridethtohayes, that includes the "Ice Bowl' the championship game between Green Bay and Dallas, in which all the camera dollies were frozen in poaition. I seen taped footage from that game on E.S.P.N. Classic's "Replay! The History Of The N.F.L. On Television:"). I do remember that spinning collage intro too!

  • you are right dgtile does anybody remember the games on cbs in the mid to late 60s at the halftime of the games when Frank Gifford used to give the scores he used to push this board that used to spin with the scores of the other games on it boy that takes me back

  • The Lions in a playoff game?! This video must be as fake as my World Football League video.

  • dgtile dont you mean the vikings paul krauss

  • no brick..krause was traded to the vikes in 1968

  • @dgtile: I remember the ticket stubs or pennants or whatever being peeled off one at a time, but quickly, until the last one revealed "The NFL Today" .. I think by 1970 though they had already had the graphics with the running guys in the background; the scrolling ticket stubs was a mid to late 60's thing.

  • heres what i remember rladpm..i really got into my 49ers in 1970 as a 11 year old fanatic that swept the city...by week 3 i was watching all CBS games even non niners games..I distinctively remember the ticket stubs with the helmuts on them..i think by playoff time they stopped it.but im glad u remember that rladpm..good job

  • the one thing i want to share soon..but dont have the knowledge to do it is to transfer the 1964-65 EYE ON THE NFL intro which is like the game of the week..its cool..starts with the giant CBS eye slowly shrinking into the background with Jack Whitaker commenting on how 40 million viewers each week tune in to great NFL action on CBS Sports.then They show a Pittsburgh player running a kickoof back for a TD.Then switches to Washingtons Paul Krause making a crushing tackle ..Footage in B/W

  • No Frank Gifford is sitting on Frank Glieber's lap...lol

  • Is Dick Stockton sitting on Frank Gifford's lap? Seriously.

  • u notice as late as 1970 the NFL still promoted their broadcast openings with a college theme (marching band songs)

  • what I remember about this 1970 intro is the missing20 second drum march with the scrolling ticket stubs of the 26 teams before what u see in this video.

  • I have been looking all over for something that had this theme in it! thanks!

  • Dallas won 5-0 and went on to win the NFCCG and go to the SB...however they lost to the then-Baltimore Colts I believe.

  • Confidence.....we played this at St. Aug H.S. when the football team would enter the field

  • LOL, THIS IS HILARIOUS!!!!!!!

  • lespaulstandar....you nailed it....it's all about who can put on more buffoons. as much as i thought NBC/AFL was suprior to CBS/NFL back in the '60's and early '70's, CBS was quantum leaps above the "dumbed down" sportscasting today

  • pat summerall is the walter cronkite of sports casters, integrity!

  • @MultiCrystal1 If cutting in line for a liver transplant is your idea of integrity. And obfuscation in the aftermath of the blow to Kurt Warners's head by mike vrabel as part of his role in duping the viewing masses during THE FIX THAT WAS XXXVI! Or referring to Marshall Faulk as a "so-called superstar. Yeah, real integrity on display there from the alcoholic PHONY! A good broadcasting voice DOES NOT equate to personal integrity.

  • I remember seeing in the summer of 1972, 73 or 74 a preview film for the upcoming NFL season on CBS where the actual words to the "Confidence" theme were actually sung and had the words on the screen...would love if anyone could find that...

  • OMG! I remember that theme music like it was yesterday; haven't heard it in thirty odd years...

  • The name of this song is "Confidence"

  • summerall and brookshire the nfl game of the week on friday nights at eleven oclock on friday nights late 60s to early to mid 70s in new york

  • God, Dick Stockton must be like 109 years old if he was on the sidelines for this game. Just kidding.

  • Summerals voice=football

  • That's Summeral's voice, right?

  • Yes, it was Summerall. Great voice.

  • Thanks. Yeah, I could listen to Summerall/Madden team all day

  • All this culminated in a baseball game, as the Cowboys won 5-0.

  • I've never seen this footage nor was I aware Frank Gifford worked for CBS!

This was great! CBS graphics were top-notch and thank you very much for posting it.

  • These old pregame shows ruled. Now it's all about comedy ... like a contest to see how many jokes you can crack. Wish they'd get back to sports. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for posting this. I remember this great old CBS NFL theme back from the days when they used good music.

  • Do you remember when they used this music to a montage of N.F.L. photos set to the C.B.S. N.F.L. theme in the late '60s?It certainly was one of best marriages of film and music.

  • I remember watching this game on my 19 inch B and W television that picked up 3 channels LOL. Come along since then. I never I would oneday enjoy the games on 46 inch Sony in HD, that picks up 300 channels, including every game played on Sunday.

But fun to look back. I'm also curious how you recorded this material, or did you find it somewhere else?

  • This sounds like a College Football team's highlight show intro.

  • this theme song is the only thing the nfl had in the late 60's. afl was a superior talent, and fun to watch. nbc had the best football announcers, cbs had pretenders

  • Comment removed

  • ray scott and jack whittaker were 2 of the all time best play by play men ever on TV....NFL & AFL broadcasts from 1960-1969 were great.....

  • Curt Gowdy was horrible. nice, nice man but very slow to react and had real trouble keeping up in real time with game calling. MY vote for BEST FOOTBALL ANNOUNCING TEAM of all time was on CBS in the late 60's calling the NY Giants games ~ Jack Whittaker as play by play with Frank Gifford doing color. these guys had it all!!!

  • What is the name of this music in this intro.

  • Steven,

The theme song was called "Confidence", from the 1964 Off-Broadway play "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty".

  • thanks for posting this!

  • Can someone help me with this? So Don Criqui and Dick Stockton were both hired by CBS in 1967?

  • or listen to Charlie Jones and Curt Goudy call AFL games they were two of the best

  • i have this whole game on vhs tape what a battle i love frank glieber voice man every sunday back then i live for this stuff things are not like it use to be

  • How did you tape this in 1970? Not that I don't believe you. I am just curious what technology you used. It was a great battle 5-0, and with the closer in FG's!! Love

    Frank Gleiber.

  • What ever became of CBS' 1970s NBA open that was on You Tube, then removed?

  • dgtile- If you can post those 2 intro's, you will become a hero to an entire generation of NFL TV viewers!

  • Comment removed

  • dgtile, I am anxious to see those two intros.

  • i have the 1964 "EYE ON THE NFL" intro for CBS and the intro for 1966 season in color on CBS as well..will get it on here soon.

  • If you have the rest of this game...please post it.

  • No one sucks like the Lions. In fact, they have raised failure to such a height that we cannot help but admire them.

  • I was 5 years old when this game was played. Frank Glieber was one of the best. I would say at the time he was 36. Gifford was 39 Summerall was 40. Stockton was 27. Criqui was 28. Al Michaels was 26. They were the younger up and coming announcers then and now they are the great legendary TV veterans.

  • Of course, CBS' #1 NFL play-by-play guy in 1970 was the great Ray Scott, paired with Summerall as his color commentator. You could make an argument for that as the best NFL TV duo ever.

  • Great memories, started watching football1965, that music is football

  • Wow, before Gifford went to Monday Night Football. That was in the Tom Brookshire days on CBS, he was the color man with Pat Summerall

  • wish I could have watched when summerall/borrkshire did a Viking game back than....do you think there might be a way to purchase a tape of one of those games done by those to anouncers???

  • No, but you could try to go to CBS archives site. I dont know if you could request it or not. You could try just typing it at Google

  • appreciate your comment inv. #3 I'm a big viking fan going back to their super bowl losses. that okay, I feel bud Grant was a star in his own way coaching the Vikes back than.

  • Raider Fan here. Sorry about that Oaktown beatdown in Super Bowl 11 - you were probably too young to remember. I will say this - you guys are close now. with Adrian Peterson and that defense, you're one QB away.....I thought you had Eagles beaten until late in that game

  • yes, your sure right Inv. # 3. I wonder if Tarvis Jackson will ever mature as a professional quarterback??? He sure has the athleticism in his body. Yes, our defense is pretty awsome with the william brothers up front on that line.and adrian running around back their....... Guss Ferrotte is too old to play this game...so we will see what takes place in 2009. Yes, I remember that super bowl # 11. Raiders awsome. The last time I was in Oakland was in 1977 running around with a buddy. I'm 56

  • Not too young here for the Superbowl 11 beatdown of my beloved, yet hard luck, Vikings.

I'm still mad abou the Mcclanahan fumble ;-(

  • The name of this song was "Confidence"!

  • Dude you either owened the first vcr ever made or you have this on master reel.

  • Leave it to the freaking Lions to lose 5-0. Just more of our sad football history here in Motown.

  • 5-0. Sounds like a baseball score.

  • Man, do I remember this music. It goes back to my earliest childhood when my father would turn the NFL games on on sunday, then fall asleep on the couch. Now I do the same thing. NFL football has always been an excellent soporific. I also remember the earlier opening with this music, when they had the live action film, and I remember when they switched to this "cartoon" opening, and not liking it, liking the "old" opening better.

  • 1970 was the year I became a Cin. Bengals fan. I was about 8 years old and just starting to watch football. They seemed like an up & coming team, and I liked their plain orange helmets with "Bengals" written across it. How I've suffered since. How decisions made at such a young age can affect one's whole life! What misery and regrets have come from that hasty and unwise decision!

  • George Will once wrote an essay about being a youngster and "pledging his troth" to the Chicago Cubs, a decision he has had innumerable subsequent occasions to regret.

  • RE:Raquello

I started watching in late 1969, I was 8 at the time.

If you think your youthfull desicion was bad and caused you misery. Then say nothing of mines. I chose the Vikings to root/ cry for...., I too thought their helmets looked cool. Good thing I never liked the lions helmet!!

  • Ha ha....Don't feel bad. Back in the early '70s I became an Oilers fan. My hometown is about 125 miles east of Houston. After numerous playoff disasters, the owner of the team backstabbed the fans in Texas and Louisiana and moved the team to Tennessee. For a long time I quit watching NFL football. But the Cardinals were an exciting team to follow this year. I only wish they had won the Super Bowl.

  • Why wasn't there any support for the Oilers to stay in the NFL? The Browns, while older and richer in tradition made their way back with colors and tradition intact. Screw the Titans!

  • I remember watching that game.
