"...jazz is much more difficult than rock..." No serious musician cares about that.
It does not matter if someone plays "better" than another. Music is for bringing people together . If you do not like it, you do not have to hear it. No one really needs any "expert" to explain what is good or not.
Wayne Krantz does a tremendous job on that song. He is in the groove and his solos fit in and end at the end of the phrase. To answer steelydanbowler's comments; no it is not wrong to feel that way. It lets you know that the music is righteous if it fills your soul.
@basssplayer and @mike03870, sorry it took so long. Scale at 2:57 in a- is actually a Mixolydian mode. nat. minor with a #6. Start with a reverse sweep-pick from 7th fret on hi-E string, pull at you notes 9, -7, 5, -3 in a blur to start it off. I'm a bassist too but I use that figure often. It would be an AMAJ.7 chord in sweeping up instead pinky on A, 7thfret on "D" string. 1,3,5, M7 at 4th fret, hi E-string. Does that make sense? 4 fingers in a row at a 45deg. angle. Then noodle in Mix. mode.
@marcomania444 Don't know what you mean by "A Mixolydian mode. nat. minor with a #6", but Mixolydian, even with alterations, has to contain the major third and minor seventh (tritone). In A that would be C# and G. The vamp is A minor, so C# wouldn't work, and he is mainly using G#, although he does throw in the odd G passing note. (Specifically F#,G,G#).
The first thing he plays at 2:57 is an Ami9(ma7) arpeggio: B,G#,E,C#,A. He then plays melodic minor fragments ending with F#,A,G#,F#,E @2:59
Krantz's style reminds me of Frank Zappa, bursts of chromatic frenetic solos punctuated with pregnant pauses between. Nice touch when guitar is playing the horn lines. I am not in any way critical of his style, just an observation, and b.t.w. Steve Vai was in the FZ band late 70's...
I have had the privilege of getting to know Wayne on his visits to the UK over the last 10 years. I have grown up with Fusion and Wayne is undoubtedly one of the greats. He has the best 'time' of any guitarist I have ever heard. A totally unique voice! And when you get to this level, it is not about who is 'better' - that is a totally redundant concept - it is merely about personal preference. Come back to the UK soon Wayne!
megustatacosmucho...you're the man..i agree with you. It's so uncivilized people compare people.,,simply "can't compare apples to oranges". i love Krantz, Holdsworth, Vai, Slash, Scott Henderson, Metheny..etc. i love every guitar player who plays with a strong conviction on what they do.
personally, i dont think its donald's best vocal performence, but i did love the song overall (the live version on iTunes from the new york rock & soul revue is my favorite). krantz is great & it fits in perfectly with the whole beat of the song.
No, it's Donald Fagan singing Green Flower St... Live in concert... and I get to see it.... again and again.... well I guess it is Heaven, now that I think about it.....
ok, yeah, sorry, i forgot, i know nothing about music or production... and I hadnt realised that what that dude is playing is NOTHING like what any other player has ever done with Steely Dan...
Listen, if Becker & Fagen didnt want it that way,he wouldnt be playing that way. They are notorious control freaks and perfectionists. Its simply Krantz style. He is a jazz/fusion player. Just different. Dan fans are such purists, we love the tracks as they are because we know every note by heart, we have to take a step back to appreciate the live version. Still, compared to most live versions from others, they are in a league of their own.
Dude for real,,, Wayne Krantz is nothing like steve vai. Vai is all hardcore rock en shit, Wayne is a real top jazz/fusion player. Believe when i say that jazz is much more difficult than rock. Wayne combines great playing speed with melody and thats hard to do.

The guitar solo starting at 2:47 just brings me to tears. It's freakin' beautiful.. Is that wrong to feel that way? :-P

@steelydanbowler If the guitar solo starting at two:47 blows you away, listen to the first half of it, too. That starts around 2:20

@TheAcousticBob Oh I agree.. Krantz is one of my favorites... I just think it had to do with that particular portion of the melody.

Anyone know what scale Krantz is working out of during the A- in the lick at about 2:57-3:05?

-Sounds like A melodic minor [ABCDEF#G#]

Thanks - turns out he's all the hell over that scale.

@basssplayer Ya it's melodic minor; the main key of this song. He has great melodic minor lines.

that was wicked version - they should do that live with the current band instead of Haitian Divorce, because Becker's vocals just do no work.

i think the guitarist ruins this track, he's a great player, but he's playing more like he's in a steve vai tribute than steely dan...

You could also say the female vocalists ruin it since the original has layered male vocals.
I won't say it, though. Thought this was terrific.
