A brilliant man! I live my life by his words. He inspired me to never get discouraged and discover my bliss! Have any of you seen the new documentary on him Finding Joe? It is fantastic and inspiring. I hope you guys love it as much as I did. findingjoethemoviedotcom/
When Jesus says, "And he called unto him the multitude with his disciples, and said unto them, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."
If taken literal, one must ask, what possibly could Jesus have meant. The crowd had no idea he was to be crucified.
But, if taken as a cue to the reader, who surely knows Jesus was crucified, the meaning becomes obvious.
@WilhelmDrake When you let go of a self-centric life (deny yourself) and accept your burdens (take up your cross) it sounds more like a fine way to live out one's days, instead of any attachment to a figure of such acrimony and argument as Jesus - a religious figure. What has religion to do with living one's life in partnership with our burdens, making peace with them instead of fighting them? Campbell says it all best, not biblical heresay - imho.
It would be interesting to hear about similar developments in the other areas where agriculture was independently "invented" (China, Mesoamerica, Papua New Guinea, Western Africa, etc).
@theutd: Actually, Campbell's work is used by many, many teachers. I show the first episode of The Power of Myth to my senior classes, and know of quite a few educators who use the steps in the Hero Journey. Indeed, I emphasize with my seniors that graduation IS crossing the threshold...
Just an FYI: If not for the tireless work of everyone at the Joseph Campbell Foundation, none of these clips would exist. People were hired to put these videos together from mountains of raw footage. Nothing comes for free. The JCF is a not-for-profit organization running on a shoe string budget. Maintaining copyrights not only protects the foundation legally, but helps offset the cost of continuing to collate and publish unreleased material. There is a lot more to come. Please support the JCF.
This great man is dead, why isn't his interviews, speeches freely available like the videos of Alan Watts? Shame on the JCF foundation. You may say that you're non-profit, but people still have to pay for the inspirational work of Professor Campbell. Shame!
What he says makes a lot of sense, and it's fascinating to listen. I guess he didn't gain a broader recognition in his country because he treats the stories of the Bible as what they are - another set of myths. It makes Christians angry.
@theutd - Our present system is one that depends on conformity and submission to authority. If Campbell's work was taught to school children it would be harder to mold people into what the system wants. For example Campbell talks about how the process of maturing involves finding your own path in life and how western tradition was built on questioning authority. This explains why we have so many problems. Our system is completely at odds with human nature and our history.
@theutd I do it in my school. In my free time every few weeks I lecture Introduction to Mythology to my students. And it's goal is to introduce Joseph Campbells thought and work to students of art school. Also introduced it to my colleges who never heard of him. So it depends on a teacher.
@theutd Our schools are designed to perpetuate the dependance on the system. Fortunately for those who want to learn the information exists outside of the schools. I learned more during my school years from private study than I ever did in school.(public). There were good teachers but they were in the same dumbed down system. Any school will teach you alot about people though. The school system taught me how a stupid bureaucracy inevitably attracts stupid people.
@theutd Probably because most tax-payers in our school districts are too heavily influenced by Christianity and would shit a brick if anyone told their children that what they took as "gospel truth" is in large part mythological and legendary in nature. There's some good history in there, I should say, but it's often skewed through the lens of religious nonsense, which Campbell cuts right through.
@jhgosnell I agree that some could handle it, but the ones that could handle it wouldn't be the ones that would be standing in front picketing the schools.Theyre still debating whether to still teach evolution in the South. It's really sad...
Joseph Campbell was a huge influence in my life. Many people now do not know of his rich contribution to humanity; the Sacredness of Life shared by ALL CULTURES regardless of different religions and languages. We are all telling the same story/myth with different words/symbols. I am glad there is a foundation to honor him, but your videos do no justice to the Power of this man and the words he spoke. Please vitalize this channel. It will be appreciated by many. Thank you.
I still treasure my 6 volume Power of Myth series and my Sukhavati DVD...I still can't get over how a minister (like Bill Moyers) would spend so long with JC during the late 1980's. I wonder if Joe straightened Bill out on his "life has a meaning" beliefs...I can still hear JC echoing in my noggin, "a bunch of protoplasm with a propcreative urge"...

As a kid I remember watching Campbell on PBS. He was a major positive influence on me as a child. The man was a genius.

Did he really believe that Exodus, Judges etc. was history?
WilhelmDrake 9 months ago
@WilhelmDrake Sometimes. The bible is both a historical
and spiritual document but, not always accurate.
If you require the bible to be literal, then you are going to
be disappointed.
It is a metaphor. Exodus, is not about a tribe, who enslaved,
becomes free and then quests for the Promise Land.
It's about the liberation of the soul from its own enslavement.
It's the fault of the 'religious' that people are unable to
see the bible's wisdom & truth.

I couldn't agree more. Those who always take the bible as literal are missing many of the best treasures in it.
