  • Congratulations, that's amazing!

  • By far Spanish and English are the most spoken languages in America.

  • best empire is Russian Empire

  • @MrLazycoder Even after we destroy our country? All that we can do now, thats write some pathetic phrases, and remind about our histori. O, and prays for health Great Empire Vladimir 2. If you think that Russian Empire is the greatest why you write this message on english, а не на русском етыть тебя за третье колено?

p.s. Sorry for bad english, I don't like this language.

  • hey... australia has given its independence since 1901. Why the hell you put australia independent in 1940? Guys, you need more data based on fact!!!

  • Spanish and British empires are the most important..

  • CUBA IN 1869. FUCKING ANGLO IGNORANTS. Where is the american independence mother of god. 177x

  • wtf did i just watch?

  • the u.s. probably will default on their debt unless if it cuts yearly deficits to 0 immediately and then raise taxes on everyone

  • where's the US????? they have the biggest empire right now

  • @MrBigEnchilada Russia and Canada are bofe bigger than the US

  • @Daleksaresupreme1 russia no longer has an empire, canada never did, the u.s. currently has the biggest empire for it pretty much provides all the armed forces in the UN and NATO. Of course there are many places we're in, we just dont talk about it.

  • @MrBigEnchilada your a jingoist (look that one up) theres no point in talking to you

  • @Daleksaresupreme1 what are you talking about? so you dont agree that U.S. is involved everywhere? you think we should be in more places?

  • You missed Ireland breaking away from the UK.

  • I like 0:00 the best

who agrees that people should ban independicing from a countrie!

  • and in the future we Europeans shall all unite, and gain the power, that our ancestors had, back ;)

  • @FinMilkku that is about as likely as the US paying off its debt....

  • @AStealA8 Exactly, so very likely. ( US had major debts before, and they will deal with this too. so don't start talking shit about how US will fall and etc etc etc... )

  • @FinMilkku The US isn't gonna fall, but it isn't gonna pay off all of its debt either. Just like Europe will never unite under one banner. They dont like each other enough.

  • @AStealA8 what the fuck are you talking about? of course USA is gonna pay its debt. and so will EU. and when this crisis is over, EuroSceptism will be in major parts over.

  • @FinMilkku You do realize that the US only pays the interest on its loans right? It isn't planning on paying off the debt anytime soon. Even if the US government decided it did want to pay off the debt it would take years. Also, if you studied US economics you would know that the debt is issued in treasury bills. All of those hold the right to be voided if the own ever uses military force against the US. Chances are China is going to void its T-bills.

  • Comment removed

  • @FinMilkku Also, under what notion do you feel that the EU is going to rise to power? Population growth has all but stopped there. The smaller countries are starting to default on their loans. GDP in the EU isn't rising at all. The most powerful nation in Europe, the UK, wants nothing to do with teaming up with the others and taking orders from the French. Friendship between such different countries will only last so long. It is just a matter of history. There will be war in Europe again.

  • @AStealA8 you might be right. but i still believe that we Europeans still have a chance to rise. we just need new leaders, that are not fucking corrupt.

  • 1961 -- Boom!!!

  • love how from at about 1975 Portugal suddenly explodes almost completely

  • France win !

  • Comment removed

  • wth how come they all popped mid 1900's?

  • @TopAce777 Long story short: The World Wars happened and left the colonial powers broke and unable to maintain their empires.

  • @kimpeater1 Oh, but it happened some time after the end of the second world war 1945 around the 1950's 60's so that's why I asked ^-^

  • @TopAce777 It took some years before popular unrest culminated in an independence movement. Things like this take some time. They're not instantaneous.

  • 2:39 France just had diarrhea!

  • looks like someone hates America

  • lol Mexico was bigger than the French empire in 1821

  • this is too awesome xD

  • This is an amazing visualization...

How can I use the same tool, buddy?

  • Portugal, although it had the smallest empire compared to the other 3, was the longest-lived. From the 1400s explorations to the handover of Macau in 1999.

  • @boettcherownzu Don't forget that most Portuguese explorations were financed by the Spanish, the Spanish were not great sailors like the Portuguese, but they were great conquerors.

  • @nemesis962074 financed by the spanish? wtf? we had sailors working for spain, not spanish financed explorations lol!

  • @akkappul I shall go kill myself know x(

  • @boettcherownzu yeah baby we rule :P

  • canada, lol.

  • 1970. And the portuguese stood for last ;)

  • I was watching British grow... and grow... and grow... and sticking my middle finger up at the other empires.

  • cool, but France should've disappeared around WWII

  • Why is there no US? US had an empire too.

  • @akinkhoo The United States never had a colonial empire. Nor where they an "empire".

  • @BRC98 you are missing Philippines & co, these are colonial by the virtue that they are tax yet did not have any formal representation.

  • Spain the world's biggest empire during 4 centuries, it all ended thanks to Napoleon.

  • Funny that the British and French empire started to gain more territories after the fall of Spain.

  • Haha the United States must of been a big bubble :D

  • you should have added russia.

  • Go Portugal Go

  • You should add Germany, would be interesting in the 40's ;-)

  • i don't get it.

  • I did not see america pop out of britain

  • @TheBarns95 America left Britain in 1776s. This is set in the 1800s after the American independence

  • damn it Britain. huge as hell till we broke free and later on Britain declined in power.

  • The US is an empire! it has 50 states that idealistically operate as 50 separate sovereign countries universally bound by a few rules and principals. the more the federal government grows the bigger the empire gets. just because each "country" is not separately spread all over the world (they all mostly border each other) doesn't mean we are not an empire (unfortunately) and along with the UN and America "spreading democracy" all over the world, we are surly growing the empire.

  • @scalp340 Yeah, except they're not actual countries, they're states.

  • @Frusciantefan77 just like there is a real difference in the UK, even though they ARE sovereign countries, still under the same monarch type rule. (sarcastic) state....country, its all the same. regardless of the word.

  • @scalp340 But saying Pennsylvania is a separate country is like saying my living room is a separate house.

  • @Frusciantefan77 im simply says federalism is essentially an empire in it self. but when a peaceful federalist country starts the imperialism machine, but doesn't actually lay claim to a conquered country. its hard to see the empire. I'm actually an American who is "anti-empire" just trying to play devils advocate.

  • Anyone else reminded of Loco Roco?

  • 1831 - Why does Bolivia disappear? It is still there today!

  • only 1 African country has improved GDP since independence

  • "It's the fresh wind that blows against the empire."

  • starlight moonlight goes quite well with this :D

  • Why is Australia breaking off in 1940?? Australian Federation was in 1901!

  • Oh shi- France you OK there buddy? D:

  • The sun never set on the British Empire.

  • @Russwatford The original quote is about the Spanish empire, not the British. It was said by Charles V, since he was the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire he was also emperor of Spain and it's colonies in Asia and the Americas.

  • see the black background...that's not a background...tis' M'erica lol J/K

  • 2:41 lol :)

  • Great vid. Needs music though :D

  • I love watching Spain shit Cuba

  • I think this is very interesting... that British bubble was HUGE!

  • 2:40 1961 was a good year

  • The age of the empires HAS ENDED!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Guys you do realise it is visualising the colonial empires not every empire ever...

  • Thats interesting...

  • Hahahaha, France 1960 - 1962 ... Pshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

    that's cool!

    Colonialists rest in pieces

  • Comment removed

  • portugal the last standing !!!!!!!!!

  • are you fucking kidding me? canada was founded 1867 not 1931

  • @fozziefan "December 11, 1931 - the Statute of Westminster goes into effect: Canada is granted full legislative independence in national and international affairs, with the Crown represented by the Governor General.

  • wow a lot of countries

  • You missed the the part were Napoleon takes over half of Europe.

  • @xXDECIVERXx74 not portugal or britain only spain was controlled

  • they got some dates VERY wrong!!

  • Thats interesting I didnt see ireland pop out of britain :)

  • @emmettheledge When did Ireland formally break away from Britain? 1922? 1937? 1949? It was a gradual process that would have been shown as a very slow breakaway. That is one weakness of the video.

  • British Empire? I'm British/Scotish/Irish born New Zealand. My family from UK of Britain and Ireland (presently UK of Britain and Northern Ireland.)

  • why do they rumble 1840? is that a war?

  • @whilshals napoleonic wars?

  • @whilshals No. They are growing.

  • this is awesome

  • @ 1866 what is that increase in France?

  • @AngelBiLove If I was to guess.. continued expansion into Africa

  • @Knowyerfacts -= 1884/1885 Berlin & Brussels Conference "carving up of Africa'"

  • OMG EMPIRES "POP" UP FROM OTHER EMPIRES!!! O_o lol

  • @Pichuscrat Yeah, they're like mushrooms. LOL

  • Oh, this could be so expanded upon... let's include ALL the empires... the Soviets... the American Empire... the Chinese Empire.... Unfortunately, the author of this wonderful clip was a byproduct of the anti-British-imperialist prejudice... but he nibbled on something that is worthwhile.

  • @hegemonymony America (the USA) never had an empire.

  • the Mexican empire will rule the world!

  • This is fucking stupid and pointless.

  • There should have been a quick growth and shrinkage of Germany at around 1940.

  • @berniebay Do you mean France near the beginning?

  • @juliusengel

No, I mean The Second World War.

But that makes sense as well; Napoleon and that whole deal.

  • Congratulation for the video.

In fact, I'm happy to see this: In 1970 (when Salazar died) Portugal was the largest of this four Empires...

    Greetings from Portugal!

  • Great i like how u put it this way! Also whoever said ottomans was the longest lasting empire thats not true, its the romans!

  • @jjazone No, it is the Mayas!

  • Because the usa was out before 1800. Greetz from bavaria

  • why did it not show Britain shit out the USA?

  • Spain- "I HAVE GROWN TO THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD!"

Rome- "psh, I've conquered all you before."

Britain-"you didn't conquer all of Britain!"

Rome-"O yes. built a wall. they call themselves Scots don't they? You've never really persuaded anyone to consider themselves British. back then, it was an honor to be Roman."

    France- "Shut up."

Rome-"France? Ha! had to change your name now eh GAUL? to much of an embarrassment?"

lol conversational battles for 'Who was the greatest' will never die.

  • British Empire is BIGGEST, biggest, biggest Empire in 1920s.

  • Gasm

  • what about the ottomans? longest lasting empire in history.

  • Cuba was part of the Spanish Empire until 1898. You had it leave to early. you suck cock

  • A pretty cool representational video, though I would have liked to see the Russian, Ottoman, German, Austrian, Japanese, and American empires added for variety.

  • Huh?

    Greeks? Romans? Russian?

  • Hapsburgs? Ottomans? Russia? USA?

  • I like

  • Before 1800 spain was MUCH MORE BIGGER

  • @VITYVIKTOR

That's doubtful, as Spain's greatest expansion was with Carlos III.

  • Very cool.

  • LOL! france just exploded! 2:35

  • Nota 20 como lição de história.

  • "top 4 maritime empires of the XIX and XX centuries"

  • what happened to america?

  • Amazing work!

  • Comment removed

  • So awesome.

  • Russia is the corrupt stinking black hole.

  • Ovviamente l'Italia non si considera neanche, certo, perchè mettere una nazione che nei primi anni del '900 superava di gran lungo tutte quelle che ci sono?

    Anche la Germania non esiste...

  • Imperium fail

  • The Portuguese Empire (Portuguese: Império Português) was the first global empire in history. It was also the longest-lived of the modern European colonial empires, spanning almost six centuries, from the capture of Ceuta in 1415 to the handover of Macau in 1999.

  • @klacker35 Britain unlike portugal still has oversees posessions and last time i checked the royal family still are the kings and queens of canada australia new zealand etc etc the map may have changed but the rulers havent

  • @BaconVonBock

Well, youre right. But, like Britain, Portugal still has overseas posessions as well. Check the Açores archipellagus (9 islands) and Madeira archipellagus. They are the reason for Portugal to posess the bigest economic sea zone in europe.

    Best regards

  • @klacker35 However... The Portuguese Empire is over. The British Empire is still intact, and has never actually been defeated.

    Territory such as:

British Antarctic Territory, Tristan da Cunha, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, The Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Saint Helena, Ascension Island, British Indian Ocean Territory, The British Virgin Islands, The Turks and Caicos Islands, Anguilla, Montserrat, Bermuda, The Cayman Islands, The Pitcairn Islands, Akrotiri and Dhekelia.

  • @TheCheeseFood dear english get the fuck out of others peoples countries

  • @klacker35 cool story bro, but they're still Portuguese...

  • bulsht, this video made somone who dosent have a clue about history

  • 2:10 british and french empires. GONE.

  • where was ireland breaking off from britain?

    should have been in 1922

  • @torque234 oh yeh that was left out =/

  • very interesting

  • Pretty cool way of illustrating the fortunes of the biggest maritime empires.

  • Why no US? :D

  • where is the us

  • @Fenus4 Cause US has never been an empire..

  • @Ricokz orly. what about claiming all over the british stuff during WW2?

what about factically empireing right now, atm?

  • @Fenus4 US is a simple country, if you are going to call every country that has large territories an empire, then we already have "The Empire of Canada", "The Russian Federation Empire", "People's Empire of China" etc. US is not Empire, end of story. Just because US got the territories they should have gotten doesn't make it an empire.

  • @Ricokz Disregard the last sentence I wrote. Anyways, US didn't take over British colonies during WWII.

  • @Fenus4 The US hasn't done ANY empire building during the lifetime of anyone watching this video. You have twisted political views making you believe we are taking control of anything at all.

  • @scythelord

    Louisiana Purchase 1804

    Spanish Cession of Florida 1819

    Oregon Territory 1846

    Mexican–American War 1846-1848

    Gadsden Purchase 1853

    Alaska Purchase 1867

    Hawaii Annexation 1898

Puerto Rico Ceded by Spain 1898

Virgin Islands Purched from Denmark 1917

  • Avé Portugal. Avé!

  • Many things may be missing but it is mentioned that it is about "... the evolution of the top 4 maritime empires of the XIX and XX centuries by extent." And so, that's correct.

  • The spanish empire is clearly in decline...

  • Larga vida al Imperio colonial español!

  • I quote: "evolution of the top 4 maritime empires"

  • 2:38, byebye French colonial empire :P

  • Germany, Russia, USA, Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, Qing Empire, Japanese Empire among others are not here...

  • @gianlucanders USA not an empire its a country for fok sake

  • em 1922 a irlanda tornou-se independente (república da irlanda) e, se não estou em erro não foi aí referido. achei que isso seria importante visto que eles foram a primeira colónia britânica.

  • i didnt like it for several reasons

    first

it doesnt show the HUGE inner european events happing between 1800-1945 that heavily changed balances between the countries

    second

where are the big wars? its almost as they didnt suffer at all during those times...

    third

without the us and germany this doesnt make any sense - both countries influence history at least as much as gb and france

well but its a good start liked it

  • Weak

Why just began in 19th century and were the american, ottoman and russian empires among others?

Not mention the historical errors, Cuba for example became formally independent at end of 1890's not as appear on video

  • Very nice schoolproject but you forgot the Dutch, quite an empire in the old days and adding Germany would have made it more interesting as well.

  • britrash =\ btw were are the dutch?? they were freaking big back in those days

  • Well it's because the US is EVIL of course. ;)

  • Where is the US? I'm Canadian and curious why it isn't included is all. Isn't it relevant?

  • United States didn't appear in the video because they left the British Empire in the 18th century, and the video show the evolution of the 4 greatest european empires during the 19th and 20th centuries
