Thanks for the info!!!!! That is why I hunt in the woods because you still cover your hole back up, but you don't have to worry about it being extremely neat! Thanks again - Planejet42
Nice video!! I hate seeing all them nasty plugs.............. I like the screwdriver theory ... But something like a durable plastic rod not to scratch the coins...GOOD JOB!
Excellent tutorial Ron...Something that we all must do to keep Parks open to detectorists..And our hobby alive..Thank You..This one goes in my favorites..Thank You for taking the time to make this...Dave Thumbs WAY UP
Hey Chicago Ron.. I really like this. Very commendable! Thanks for taking the time to make such an excellent video :-) My only question is: Have you ever been stopped from metal detecting in a public park? And I'd be concerned that that long handled digger (even though it has a small cutting end) would raise some eyebrows.
I have been approached by park district workers and after I show all the trash I am removing and no marks in the grass they usually say thanks, have a nice day and good luck!
I also have a towel in my hand that usually covers the blade.
Most of the targets under 3 or 4 inches wont be silver coins, unless you have heavy clay soil. The problem with recovering shallow targets with a plug is you usually have to destroy the plug to recover the target. This is just the most park friendly way to recover shallow targets.
Yes you will occasionly scratch a silver. You can also use a brass probe which will be less likely to scratch the silver.
How do you clean valuable coins?

With a screw driver like he showed you are "air-ratting" the ground too. So it is a good thing. I need to practice this. Great info.

It also helps to confirm the pinpoint job of the detector with a dowsing rod or ouija board

Ron 1 thing folks don't consider is, it could be their luck that they step in a hole they just dug and break there own leg

This is a very important video a lot of careless detectorists need to see. I also have seen a lot of sloppy jobs that made me cringe inside.

Thanks a lot for showing how it is done properly. Those other peoples holes were horrible. You can see why places get closed to detecting.
