Thanks for the nice comments. The thing with Mushnik and the singing plant is called "suspension of disbelief." It's something we all do without trying up until the age of twelve . . .

But wow...that IS a massively impressive A2 puppet...the rigging necessary to lift Mushnik off the stage and swallow him must have been tricky to rig up.

That's an amazing puppet. The voice for Audrey II isn't great, but it's not terrible. The only comment I have for the puppeteer is that he should open the mouth wider when Audrey II talks.

I have never seen a #4 puppet elevated like that.  It's amazing! I heard they did something like that for broadway though...

The Broadway remount, done the same year as this community theater production, used a hydraulic puppet that actually extended over the audience.

Ours, designed by an engineer from surplus yard parts, used six human operators (two of whom were embedded in the head) a cantilevered system, and was praised by people who saw BOTH shows as being the better of the two.

BTW, our system is simple enough that with training, has been used in HS productions without our assistance.

The amount it can open is limited by the length of the guy's arms who is inside the mouth. This is not a hydraulic puppet like the one on Broadway.

but he can lift it higher length or not so they obviously have a bloke with 1cm arms in there because it doesnt seem to be moving much at all here.

Uhh, the mouth puppeteer is strapped in so he doesn't fall out when the head tilts down. And it takes a lot of reps to sustain the lip synch.

But if you have built a better manual puppet design, we'd love to see it in action!

As for YOUR voice, keep working; breath support, head resonance, vowel production, those sorts of things. You'll get there someday.

No one can touch Levi Stubbs as Audrey II! I've watched several vids of Suppertime and the voices lack the soul and flavor that Mr. Stubbs possessed. Still not bad though.

Personally, I think its mouth movements could be more animated, but I don't care, this is a GREAT Audrey II puppet. The BEST I have seen outside the movie! Major kudos to the people who have built it, and to the people operating it!

The puppet definitely makes up for the lackluster acting!

You'd think with a plant of that caliber that the direction of the play would have been handled better. I lost all urgency during this scene. Did the actors take sleeping pills before they performed?

This scene is where mushnik tries to cut seymour out of the picture by getting him indicted for murder, and seymour is KILLING his DAD! Could the stakes have been higher? If this is what the play is like at this point, I wonder just how slow it got other times.

Still not an awful performance.

This puppet behaves EXACTLY like a version I was trying to design myself, just a couple of weeks before this video appeared. One that snatches up the characters instead of them having to crawl in. This is an amazing Audrey II puppet.

Your actors--including the plant voice in my opinion--aren't that great, no offense. Seymour is too dull and calm and Audrey looks too old or maybe even big for her part. The plant voice is too subtle; good singer but he goes high at the wrong parts making it sound bad. You band, however, was the most impressive I have seen yet. You three urchins didn't look good appearance-wise, but their singing and backup was fantastic. Just my critique =) I played the plant voice in our production in April.

One operator inside the head moves the jaws up and down. Another standing behind the head with stirrups and reins controls head movement. At the end of the 15 ft. chute are 4 more operators that control pivot movement and counterbalance the head with sandbags. It's quite a ride and you plop out on a mattress.
