  • Too bad it looks like a junk pile.

  • I <3 Doctor Who! Your home is inspirational

  • Are you sure this is an upscale area? Look at the road condition and the uncut curbside grass...my poorest neighbourhood in Toronto has better condition.

  • It's Oakland. You don't need heat or air conditioning for any building. The climate is perfect.

  • Recycle, recycle, recycle, Old growth section table. Yeah :(

  • wow, this is great work!!!

  • his wife wants to talk and he's like shut up honey

  • ho shit...i won't mind having a pad like this!

  • That's incredible! More people should do this...what a great idea!

  • Very resourceful; an idea that given Americas propensity for wastefulness, should go national (but probably won't, in a culture that still adheres to the pretentious, "bigger is better") concept. You should bring what you've started, to Japan; where between the efficient recycling practices and maximization of space being widely utilized ( as seen in "micro homes")...You could expound upon what is already nearly perfect and welcomed by most.

  • nbahahaha doctor who police box reference i love this guy. it's bigger on the inside!

  • What's it like upstairs?

  • This is amazing and My Heart Jumped when he mentioned the Tardis! Love Doctor Who. Love your videos. Thank you for uploading

  • the car roofs are cool kewl but seems like it is more artistically repurposed rather than functionally repurposed.

  • @zehnsechz you are absolutely right, but this could make junkyard owners aware of the materials they could 'harvest' and then it could become functionally re-purposed.

  • @ Ishmot2.Code in the state of California is more stringent than any other state in the US. We have earthquakes, building here is an adventure.

As for a non existant problem, if more people were doing this sort of recycling it would save thousands of hours, dollars and fuel that is currently takes to recycle a car. One person isn't much of a dent obviously, Think of the money saved, the jobs that would be kept here in the US. Now almost all scrap steel is shipped to China to be processed

  • Less is more! This is a great model for the next generation of architecture.

  • Great example of the power of individual ingenuity!

  • @JL2813 Answer to a nonexistent problem.

  • From a designer and builder of my own tiny home 130sq ft. My kudos on your inventive take on reuse of materials. Beautiful design!

  • This is a beautiful, well planned, and well sourced livable sculpture. It is quite an impressive labor of love. Bravo!

  • A great example of extraordinary craftmanship!!!!

  • Absolutely loved the Doctor Who reference! <3

  • I love the siding! Are there photos of this project somewhere?

  • @sofiamedia We took some shots during our visit to the Wanaseljas. You'll find them on our Flickr photogallery. Look for our Photostream at Flickr on the directory "faircompanies". Once there, browse through our photo sets and you'll find "a green home built with salvaged car parts - berkeley, CA". You can also perform a Google search and it will come up one way or another. Cheers.

  • rust awaits :)

  • Very cool, different house!

  • That's an HOA's nightmare.

    Excellent! :)

  • Do you have full coverage or liability :)

  • @falcon02012

It's in Berkeley. He is an architect. What do you think?

  • @falcon02012

Why would he risk it all in a collision?

  • love it! they seem like very nice people :)

  • This is some mad max beauty.

  • Best selling an a lot of them in the junk yard :)

  • As a car person myself I must say this is pretty awesome!

  • "Hey neighbor, what you doing on that ladder?"

    "Waxing the house Bob."

    "Oh."

    And scene.

  • @gdrewpowers Lol that was awesome

  • Wow, the house looks amazing. So natural and organic. Compared to that other houses look boring (maybe because they look like boxes?). ... I read that shipping containers are toxic to kill off germs. I hope they removed the coating inside.

  • Incredible! What a great use of old materials ;) c

  • This house is awesome! and these people are amazing for the Who and Potter references. They need to adopt me.

I love watching these vids about home sin small spaces or using recycled materials. My husband and I have a bit of property and there's a mobile home on it, but we really want to build something that is ours. These videos are my inspiration.

  • I would be interested in hearing what you had to do to get this house past code compliance. I wanted to build a shipping container "barn" and when I mentioned it to the county community devlopment office, they said they would require about $10,000 worth of engeneering before we even started. Very depressing.

  • @1jostory If I tried this where I live they'd throw the book at me, even if I used normal material like masonry, But because they are Old Hippies in Berkeley saving the planet it's okay! If people really wanted to save the planet they would build out of masonry, like I said: Answer to an nonexistent problem, Taking some hoods out of the junk yard (although this house would look cool at Lake Mead) does not save anything but some hoods out of the junk yard.

  • so cool. i love living in the bay area.

  • You need landscapers buddy.

  • Dr. Who and Harry Potter references... Nerds! :)

    I love these people.

I wish the video would have shown featured the upstairs/bedrooms, but a very cool space nonetheless.

  • Love this, small and elegant but not cramped.

  • Tardis reference. A+

  • Every week you find the most interesting and innovative homes! I love this one, a very well designed and aesthetically pleasing home for sure.

  • Amazing - what impresses me most is ppl like this actually have the vision to see to the end of the project. The inside of the house is so beautiful and seems a lot bigger than you'd expect.

  • This video just makes me smile :D

  • VERY NICE!

  • Looks like I will have to save the money for my dome home I plan to build a smaller home and use shipping containers to hold all my junk? Think about it you need stuff if you had a dome with limited space and a shipping container with all your clothes and appliances you would not only prevent running appliances in your home where they can contribute to greater humidity but it would make your home safer after all you want home to be free of clutter. This guy IDK would he wax his home?

  • @cdltpx Before you build a dome, read Lloyd Kahn's discussion of it. He knows whereof he speaks. Do a search for 'refried domes' to find the link. This system won't let me publish a link.

  • Universal Building codes and code inspectors stops most people from doing exciting and fun creations in architecture. Some kids set my neighbors back alley fence on fire, when my neighbor was rebuilding it he was fined for not having a permit. This is a very nice house, reminds me of a houseboat, love the use of car parts.

  • @mrhulot101 Where I live I can build a dome home problem is getting a loan for the home. I think the banks are against homes that are that durable I believe that nationally they want these homes to fail bc they put too many of their customers out of business. Imagine a tornado wild fire or hurricane where the homes were standing after? Insurance companies would lose billions if we went to these types of homes.I have great credit I can get loans for other junk homes not this kind. Ron Paul 2012

  • the space inside is great!

  • Another fine example of re-purposing everyday common items found in 'junk yards'... you are showing us how to save the world and stay green, Thank you.

  • Neat D:
