  • Can I just say that I absolutly LOVE this woman!!!!! She is sooooooo GOOD!!!!!!! Wicked is my favorite show but Rent and Chess are close!

  • my dad showed me this when it was on tv one time, and i've read wicked and my dad has a soundtrack of both, so i'm a complete fan of Idina

  • It's always MEAN to show this side of someone who is un rehearsed..BOO!! Don't watch!

  • Screech! Where is Kerry Ellis? But at least it's not as bad as her attempt at Mountain Duet. What could be?

  • OMG I never realised how freaking skinny Dee is. Look at that! Er I'm jealous! :)

  • "Sadly i only got a side view"

i like the side view of Edina ;-)

  • Why'd you have to do this to me?

  • I went to see this last night (Chess not the concert) and thought it was amazing. James Fox sound so much like Adam Pascal it is unreal but Idina Menzel will always be the best Florence <3 much love for putting this up!

  • Shes Got An Amazing VOICE. i love Her. I've got this on dvd and i watch it all the time Love it :D

  • I am a HUGE Idina fan. This song is really hard to sing and personally I think Julia Murney does it better. Both women are freakin amazing!

  • I saw Shona White on the tour on monday now personally im not her biggest fan, but when she sang this is got shivers however idina still owns it!!

  • More than worth it!!!

  • I love when she does this song. But you and I with josh groban was just terrible. haha Everything else she does is completely great, just you and I.

  • is this show worth buying? obviously the cast is amazing...but is it worth $13 off itunes?

  • for some old reason i really love her when shes wearing heels under pants like that

it just makes her look so amazing :)

  • Is that Adam Pascall singing in the beginning?? xx

  • @pominidipsy Yes, that's him!

  • @pominidipsy Yup, that would be him!

  • What's the difference between Chess and Chess in Concert? Is Chess in Concert the filmed version of the musical, or is it just the cast performing all the songs?

PS: I love Adam and Idina! :DD

  • :] Chess was the original musical which Chess in Concert is based off of. it is just a recent production of the musical with a different cast and is indeed filmed.

  • well you can't really say it was "based off of" the show, it is the show, with a really stripped down staging, and a larger orchestra. they also did this kinda' thing with sweeney todd....

  • Actually saying "Based off of" is a good way of putting it. Chess was adapted by Tim Rice for the Concert version. It's quite different than the original London version. In reality no two versions of Chess are the same. Everyone who does it does it very very differently. Even to the point that in some performances different opponents win. Tim Rice adapted the concert version from several versions he saw and liked.

  • Idina just gets more and more amazing every time I hear her sing!!!!! She is awesome!

  • Idina Menzel never ceases to amaze. She can find depths of emotion in characters that is wholly original. Her take here is as much disappointment as anger in the way Freddie treats Florence. Very affecting.

She plays the role with a vulnerability that makes you believe the male leads are in love with her. Remember, Florence has to get an uptight chess player to leave his wife for her! Idina Menzel can sell that!

  • her voice sounds a young girl. really not good for a FLORENCE!

  • Pitch perfect... It was amazing live and the DVD just captured everything! Love it x

  • at the beginning that's Adam, right?? That must be so cool for them to STILL be doing shows together....they were even neighbors before Rent! Idina was actually the one to tell Adam about the Rent audition! That's what I heard anyways...

I can't even explain how much I love her. She is so amazing, and such an awesome inspiration. I'm SO jealous of Walker!!

  • What's more, Adam Pascal wasn't an actor before Rent. (as .. unfortunately seen on the early rehearsal tapes.) But has become a grade A performer, even in his vocals. SO jealous of his wife.. lol! AND Taye Diggs... I thought musical theatre men were supposed to be queer!

  • yes that's Adam. it was 1956: Budapest is Rising before she sang her solo. :)

  • She's amazing. Nobody can hit notes like she does... especially in Wicked. She's amazing and there's nothing else to it.

  • @savingthepeace agreed.

  • I. Menzel from Rent? Maureen.... WOW!

  • As far as her just standing there you have to remember is is "In Concert". I have to agree. I worship her and she can do no worng in my book. Strangly my Sister in Law hates this musical Concert but loves Idina.

  • Amazing!! simply stunning!!... too bad she is just standing there... still she was good in Chess and Wicked

  • Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Josh Groban & Kerry Ellis are all simply amazing and to have an amazing musical with the 4 of them casted is simply AWESOME!!

    Idina is such a legend!!

  • shw sounds phenomenal but she is just standing there....

  • gettin it on dvd for x-mas cant wait

  • I have listened to the Original and American versions of Chess repeatedly and I never saw Wicked. I think Idina fully captured the role of Florence, as Kerri did with Svetlana. I have heard both Idina and Kerri sing Defying Gravity from Wicked, and both were good, but Kerri has more of an angsty sort of edge to her voice, which came out PERFECT in Endgame as the jilted wife confronts her husband.

    Arbiter was cheesy.

Josh as Anatoly = siiiiiigh, perfect!

    VERY WELL DONE!

  • i dont get you people! i thought every single person cast was AMAZING. i agree that kerry's voice is differnt from idina's, but i love them both. i suppose you're right; marty pellow wasn't amazing, but i liked his main song - the arbiter.

this is a WONDERFUL musical. does anyone know others like this that i would enjoy??

  • I find the little debate between boyofletch and candide43201 to be interesting. I agree with boyoflech. I'm not exactly sure what THIS type of theatre is, but I think Idina captured Florence perfectly, the emotion and vulnerability. I think her voice suited the part quite well. I have listened to others singing the part and she is the one that made me empathize with the character.

  • Well, first, I definitely prefer Julia Murney's interpretation of Florence. It's more powerful, it's more vulnerable, and it's far more ballsy, and the complexity of all that is just far better delivered by her, especially for Florence's character.

I don't think Idina Menzel did a BAD job, per se. The vocal was great, and she's definitely a talented actress. I just wouldn't cast her in this role if they ever did a revival, if you get what I'm saying.

  • No problem with the side view :) it just makes it more interesting (if you already saw the proshot and you knew what was going on) I like your shot! Thanks for sharing!

  • Having just watched the concert DVD I have never heard such an awful racket as Idina Menzel it was just a lot of nasal shouting. She spoiled the whole thing

  • @Jacquee9 she was perfect in the dvd and the whole audience loved her!

  • idina did sooo good.she can sing everything that she wants. she has a very wide vocal range, she is a great actress and she belts like no one can ever even think of doing! GO IDINA!!

  • IDINA IS THE BEST! she did a really brilliant job!

  • I have to say that these bootleg clips don't do Idina justice. I saw this Concert at the cinema and I have to say that vocally Idina was great, however I didn't think she was 'in the moment' with the character of Florence. It was like Idina sings the songs of Chess rather than playing Florence. When you compare it to Julia Murney's amazing performance it is nowhere near as strong in terms of acting and emotion. I'm often known for slating Idina's vocals, but I was genuinely impressed with this.

  • Keep in mind, they only had a week to prepare. IMO, for a week of preparation they all did a good job getting into character. But it's hard to fully "Become" a character in just a week.

    Just my opinion. :)

  • @jcwelover Excuse me! She can sing, yes. But the part of Florence, no. She sounds like a little girl. Maria in sound of music would suit her better. This is a part for Eliane Page or Helene Sjöholm but not Idina Menzel. She should have switched parts with Kerry Ellis, Svetlana was wasted on her.

  • This is not Good!!I watch it over and over again..but its not..I think this part was way beyond her vocal limits.. I watched the concert on tv and Kerri Ellis went to town.. i can respect her for trying this but ..It hard to sing..Her pitch was all over the placer..and it was too much of a character voice..too bright,,needs more warmth (but thats just me) it hard to sing something written around someone else's voice..Espiecially Elaine Paige's

  • Warmth? It's a very cynical song. More anger is what it needs.

  • I was speaking about her voice in general..she has a great character voice.. but this is not a character part..you must use and explore more different colors in your voice

  • What do you mean it's "not a character part". That is exactly what the character of Florence is. I felt that, if you watch the whole production (and also a decent version of this song rather than these bootlegs), Idina managed to convey the vulnerability of the character beautifully - particularly the fact that Florence is the only character who does absolutely nothing to deserve what happens to her. You can argue Elaine Paige's version was better - given it was written for her, it would be!

  • A "character voice" is Different from "The Character Voice" .. a character voice is a specific sound for certain roles like wicked, good man charlie brown, adele in guys and dolls.. I believe idina has a dramatic character sound.. She was not good in this and i have watch it several times...I am not hating, just saying !! Kerry Ellis will rock and has a rounder more authentic sound for THIS type of theatre.. Florence is not for a raw voice..rather a strong, classical, old school belt...

  • Well let us agree to disagree. I don't think she's "better" than Kerry Ellis or that anyone in this show was better than anyone (with the possible exception of Marty Pellow who did disappoint me).... I personally felt that Idina conveyed the whole character very well and I did like it with a raw voice. Given how much Tim Rice had riding on this concert (they're apparently planning to reopen in the West End), I don't think he'd allow a lead to be cast who was unsuitable...

  • It's not beyond her vocal limits at all - if you watch the production again you'll see - yeah there are high bits which she does in a belt - but her voice is very raw, which is Idina's interpretation of the character. They wouldn't have cast her if she was vocally incapable of it. Kerry Ellis is brilliant and don't get me wrong, I love her, but I think having the subtlety of someone with such a good voice in relatively minor role lends something to the production as a whole.

  • Idina has a very specific sound.. which is raw, rock, tight , thing.. the part of florence does not call for that.. it will be like elaine paige singing rent. .. This was very much beyond her vocal techque, she said it herself.. they cast her because she has a fan base and a huge draw.. I do believe she is talented.. but you know that this is not good,,, I have listen to every version of chess there is and she is the worst of the florence.. does not me she is not talented..but she is NOT good

  • @candide43201 nothing is beyond idina's vocal limits

  • @candide43201 You are VERY smart. I appreciate you and agree completely.

  • @candide43201 i can agree with you.. She is alright here, but it's too nasal for my taste

  • I love this part... it is true... no is completely on ur side...

  • They're are sowing this in dblin in dndrum YAY.

  • for all of those who thinks this is bad, take this into consideration: she's moving around, the acoustics in this theatre suck, she has bad asthma, and she's SINGING IN CHARACTER!

  • Why is she putting on a silly voice? She sounds like a Simpsons voice-over...... Kerry Ellis should have sung Florence.

  • She's not putting on a silly voice. That IS her voice. That's the problem.

  • vocally, I like this better than the dvd (May 13th)...perfect anyway!!!! just love her!

  • Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Idina. She's amazing... but I feel like the negative space on the stage could have been used better. She stayed in the same place the whole time. It would have been even more powerful had she moved around a little.

  • in Indina's defense, it can be hard to sustain such powerful tone and volume if you're walking around.

when you're grounded you can focus all of your lung capacity to producing and holding powerful notes as opposed to when you move around, when you also have to use air to provide energy to your leg muscles and whatever else you're doing.

  • ROUGH.

  • That's true. Operas also have prompters aside from the conductor to cue text just to make sure everything moves smoothly.

  • omg i'm so buying the dvd!

  • is'nt Idina sopposed 2 be pregnant????

  • yeah but she wasn't a year ago when they did this show.

  • oh, i thought it was on now,. at the royal albert hall?!

  • yeah it was filmed at the RAH on the 12th and 13th may 2008.

  • I'm kind of confused...is this a show with a storyline and everything?

  • yes

  • yes it's about the politics and love behind a game of chess.. basically.. you can now buy the dvd and watch the whole thing.

  • @lgllyblnde4evr The original show was set in the 80's during the cold war. That's why it's americans vs russians

  • Yeah, I think it's just a nerve thing...haven't you ever felt like you didn't know what to do with your hands?

  • I think when it's Idina Menzel you can forgive Barbie's arms tbh.

  • Lol Barbie arms. This song is amazing though and Idina does a great job.

  • I absolutely love her, but I can't stand how she doesn't really move her arms at all. She's got Barbie arms.

  • wait what are barbie arms?? is it good? cuz shes da best lol

  • Like how Barbie's arms are just frozen in one place.

  • ooo okk

  • i just watched this on pbs the other night and idina was fantastic!!! i've seen most of her other work and have all of her albums, but this was really the first show that she showed a lot of her soprano pipes! :) i love 3:30 to the end! it's phenomenal!!

  • I was just thinking the same thing (re: soprano voice)!

  • just watched the show on PBS. i was never a hardcore idina fan, i mean i like wicked but i was never a huge fan of her voice. But this pretty much changed that. She really showed that she is a technically efficient singer. instead of just belting the whole time she was constantly mixing her voice and going into her higher register which has a really nice tone. she should try singing this style more often

  • If you liked this, you should totally check her out in "See What I Wanna See" in 2005. In particular, the song "Kesa" REALLY shows off her technical ability!!!

Glad you liked it, it was an amazing show!

  • I love see what I wanna see, but my favorites from that play are See What I Wanna See, Gloryday, and Quartet... Does the last note remind anyone else of her song Don't Let Me Down

  • I could listen to this on repeat over and over again. She's amazing!

  • She is amazing. Especially in this song. She blows Josh Groban away in this style of singing.

  • don't be sorry for the side view. jelouse of how close you are!!

  • I think this rehearsal version is far better than what ended up on the CD's.

  • Well this is apparantly the performance they did not use.. Get the video...The performance is truly amazing..

  • ...Please dont yell at me as I am full aware that I am defiantly no vocal expert, I just want to support Idina. This is her technique, sure it may not be perfect, but look where it has gotten her! We just have to realise that this is how Idina wanted to portray the role, so weve just got to loosen up.

  • We are forgetting that this was done to Entertain and not to be criticised from every angle. I for one, could NEVER get up on that stage and sing like Idina, simply because it takes some serious guts. Could it be that she was just nervous? I mean the RAH seats several hundred and this is Florence's first solo...

  • Nervous? After Wicked? And RENT? And the Tonys...and everything else? Are you kidding?

  • idinas just amazing.

  • No, no no NO! Idina is a lovely singer, but she was entirely miscast here! The song needs a darker and more resonant voice, like Julia's; Idina's voice, while very pretty, is also very light, and not as resonant.

  • I think that Idina's voice works BECAUSE it's light. I think the character is losing her innocence throughout this play, and this song is her moment of acknowledging it--she's growing up, in a way. So Idina's lighter voice fits, in my opinion. :) (Either way, we agree that it's pretty.)

  • I disagree - there's no WAY you can say Idina's voice is "light" especially compared with Julias...(who I also admire)

The thing I LOVED about Idina's performance was how she mixed this vulnerability with this fierceness! She got the character nailed...here she's aknowledging her confusion but she's fighting it with strength, and Idina's voice has TOTAL power! - its what she's known for!

I also love the mannerisms she brings, this businesslike outer stance, but this openess and vulnerability!

  • no i do agree your veins shouldnt pop out of your neck ..not if you've been properly trained...you dont sing from your throat you sing form your stomache..your throat just helps the voice register

  • Idina always taps into a really natural quality... in the acting of the song. It's a nice change from the vocal masturbation of so many people with this kind of talent.

  • OMG! That sums it up PERFECTLY!

She really DOES tap into the "natural quality" of a character. When you see her, you see Florence, in every small mannerism you can see Florence. It's not about singing a song to make it pretty, it's about singing a song because it's all this character's got to express themself and it's important to them!

Not to mention...that's some SERIOUS breath control during that long note - WOAH!

  • I don't care what anyone else thinks, I am just saying Idina is best at everything she does. I am honestly a nice person but don't insult Idina in front of me cause I get REALLY defensive about her. Sorry but that's just me. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinions.

  • Just my opinion....Idina Menzel is 10x better than Helen.

  • Idina is 10x better than anyone who has ever player her role in anything!! lol

  • Helen Sjoholm does this song the best out of anyone I've ever heard. She puts the necessary power and strength into the character that Idina just cant seem to muster.

  • Guh!. I love the way Idina walks. Is that weird? She's just so badass.

  • I hate to disagree, but when I sing, my veins pop out of my neck, it doesnt mean your strainging or not trained, I've had vocal lessons for close to 10 years, and its just the way my veins pop haha.

  • I understand, but she does not get any resonance in her voice, just a point...which makes it sound strained and thin, I just need her to breath , drop her jaw, keep that palate high and feel some SPACE.. it will really help her, especially when you are singing something like this that requires a very good technique and Style.. you can just scream it like wicked or rent.. you actually have to create music and sing whats on the page..but just my opinion

  • but thats kinda my point. There isnt a chance in hell you can get through RENT, and Def. no way to get through WICKED without vocal techniques. WICKED has some very difficult vocal requirements and most ladies doing the show end up with sever through probs. Yea Idina isnt the most trained singer, but she has had trainging, and I think the only reason she isnt amazing here is because of the video, because when I saw her sing this when I went the second night, she blew it out of the water.

  • Maybe I am missing something.. all the times I have heard her live she was flat and strained.. guess I am use to the technique of paige, Lupone, Bassey, --space and resonance..as difficult as wicked is.. it is not harder then florence and not even close to Evita..I hear she can do so much more with her voice, but She is making a lot of money sounding like a 13yr girl and I am broke(lol)..

  • I find Defying Gravity much harder than don't cry for me Argentina...I also heard Paige's greatest hits and it was terrible...

I'd say Florence is the hardest vocal part of the 3...

What Idina has is a POWERHOUSE voice and the ability to find a character and give her voice character, as opposed to most others who just sing a song so it sounds nice, there's no real urgency to get this message out - and that's what musical THEATRE is all about!

  • Yes defying gravity is a hard song..but hows about raindow high, a new argentina, eva beware of the city..an on ..Idina Menzel is an overated singer, her technique is lacking..she has a basic character voice, she tries to squeeze every sound through a tight vowel, And her voice is not powerful, its bright.. you have clearly never heard elaine paige live...

( Evita, Sunset ,Piaf, Florence) are a few parts that she originated and sang well..in my humble opinion..Idina should never be in chess

  • Maybe her technique is lacking but her voice is very infectious! This was a concert that was put together in a week so this was not about who could play the part the best! This was about getting the biggest stars to play these iconic roles so that money could be made! Idina Menzel had every right to play this role and I found her performance wonderful! I love Elaine Page and find her performance breathtaking! Everyone has their own opinion!

  • So their opinions should be respected and the actors too. It doesn't matter who you are or who I am because all we really are, are Youtubers debating on a woman who sticks her neck out into this world to do the very thing she loves to do. It is hard to be an actress because you can never pleased everyone! There is always someone who will be displeased! Give her props for trying!

  • I do not hate her.. I just don't like her in this part.....concert or not.and I just cannot except art for money(even if its the new thing to do) Maybe it is because I am Very Crazy about this score that I can't except anything less then the standard( which had been hit many times) I am very opinionated..but I do respect yours..For me as a Working artist too, you are only as good as your last perf!!I .

  • I know what you mean but it's true that money has taken over arts! It's all about money and that is why this cast wasn't about "the best" for the characters! I am just as passionate about the arts and really get upset when things like these happen! But I love Idina and am not upset about the concert for I'm not too amazed with the musical LOL :)

  • Maybe it is unfair to compare her to Elaine( after all it was written around her voice and subtext about her and TIm Rice's Affair)but you must understand as a singer and artist.I cannot just except less then what I know we can do in this world..Believe it or not..Its all coming from a good , Passionate place.. I would hope if I was bad something. someone will let me know so I can fix it and be better the next time..anyway..its all in love for the ART

  • I heard Elaine live last year and thought she was ok...and there was an Evita revival...(one which Idina turned down)

I don't agree that the concert was all about money I think it was about giving Chess a fresh new face. I ADORE the score but the show as a whole was pretty poor as a theatrical piece. I am totally in love with the theatre too and I loved Idina in it. I feel she has a darkness to her, a really subtle one, that the others didn't quite tap into in the same way...

  • I guess its about what you like.. I am a Operatic Bass- Baritone..and I just do not hear her training..it sounds tight(but thats what I hear)I believe her voice needs to be more free, that is the reason she turned down Evita(it would kill her)..but alas its all about what you like..hence why there are many singers to choose from( t.you heard Elaine at 62 yrs) but I respect your opinion..but for me all the classical singers who have heard her would valiadate my point..its all about preference

  • I've seen vids on here when Idina was at NYU. Can hardly recognise her! Its all technique and she sounds SO classical. She got a new vocal coach and they worked on a style, I believe based on natural speech/breathing techniques. It makes vocals seem more natural, less like the typical singers who don't have such emotional expression. And she turned Evita down because there were other things she wanted to do more...I'll watch Evita tonight though, bought the movie the other day :-

  • The Movie is not a good example of the score as meters and the keys were taken down a third for madonna..get the original recording..Look I understand your passion.. example: I love heather headley like God, but her as laurel in Dreamgirls(mess) Do not feel Like i am attacking Idina-- I am just saying some parts are correct for her and some are not..this one was not...And I bet she knows it..but its always good to want more as a artist..that's how we learn

  • Yeah, ok, and I didn't think she was great at first, but having got the soundtrack I am addicted and I LOVE it! (There's one note in Mountain Duet I LOVE!) I know this has got a little ranty on both parts, but really it's so great that 2 people care so passionately about the power of the theatre, I know I'm young but I really do!!!

  • When its time-Get the Original album..the black one..not the broadway version..it was changed after Micheal bennet Died( it was his big show after Dreamgirls)It's very amazing hearing what the composers had in mind..I am glad you are so Passionate( we may not agree but, it's passion that's leading us..I will send you some original clips..I think you will love them too..but chess is a hard show to love but once it gets you, you are HOOked..lol

  • And BTW..EVITA is the most difficult role to sing..Hence why there has never been a revival( don't cry for me is a rest for the singing) I have conducted both wicked and Evita...Trust!!! I understand THEATRE..But I will not put up with bad singing..This Part is NOT for her...This whole musical was brought up because of Tim Rice"s affair with Elaine(hence) I know him so well and Nobody side..it was all code..

  • Also, Idina is a classically trained singer who is regimental in her technique. I believe her voice is increddibly powerful, her voice cut right through the end harmonies of the whole choir!

Also, she has one of the most expressive voices I've heard of any performer, it's subtle and layered and there's so much to it. - You don't think she has technique? She couldn't have held that long note! And you want hard vocals? "Kesa" from "see what I wanna see" JEEEZ that ain't easy! It's LaChiusa man!!!

  • maybe I should have been less Harsh with my comments. I am very passionate. all the time I have heard her I do not hear power..I hear focus/a foward sound..For me power is Patti LuPone, Jennifer Hudson ( i am very extreame) but hey, there are a lot to choose from- I am not tell you she is bad, but TO ME, it's a character voice..but he I am not paying money to see her..so I should not hate..maybe I am just into the LInda Eder's sound..but it each his own and God bless

  • well, i think its just that her voice isnt exactly the most "full". it totally worked with Wicked, and i think she's a good singer in general. However, her voice doesnt seem to harmonize/work with the other male singers voices in this show. for whatever reason. although she does this song pretty well.

  • Meh - I LOVE her and Josh's voice together, and RENT showed her with Pascal.

  • I guess when I say I don't her classical training is what I consider a classically trained broadway singer or people like (Audra,Linda, Judy Kuhn, Kristen, Sierra Burgess, Brian stokes Mitchell, Norm Lewis) I can hear theirs at work..Maybe I should have said her technique is not right for this..I sing a lot of different operas, I am well trained but I cannot sing everything well-because different parts call for different techniques..but anyway ..much love..

  • yeah, 3:17 to 3:29 is incredible.

  • Idina has a strong classical background...

  • I see what you're saying. I love her voice, but this song is supposed to be powerfully sung...not with a voice of innocence. Julia Murney accomplishes this!!!

  • this is such a beautiful performance of this song. I love idina sooo much!!! her voice is amazing. i desperately tried to get tickets for this but they were sold out.

    love idina xxxx

  • OMG! I'M SO GLAD YOU POSTED THIS & THAT I FOUND IT! I heard about it being done in London and that they weren't recording it, I was so sad! lol.

  • They already have recorded it, it's going to be on the PBS channel on I think...June 16th

  • They did record it, and there is going to be a DVD release later on this year :)

  • This is so amazing. Idina is MY HERO!

All Idina haters should... just go away! If you have nothing nice to say about her here... then wow! Just don't say anything!

  • totally!

  • I think this is incredible. It's a shame about the sound problems at the RAH though.

  • To be fair, this was about as good as the sound was up the back of the hall!

  • I wasn't lucky, or in the minority. I sat for the first night next to the stage where they exited, and for the second night on the arena floor, where sound both times was fantastic.

However I knew people sat further up and further back where sound was not as great.

It is not something that reflects on the show, but more the acoustics of the RAH. I'd def recommend sitting nearer next time, it was a great show from where I sat.

  • where were u sat? cos the sound from where i was was amazing. but i heard that in other parts it wasnt good.

  • I can't recall what they call it, but it was the 2nd tier up, above the boxes. All the reviews on the ABBA fansites and theatre forums went mad over the appalling sound. SO much reverb and echo. You couldn't hear anything half the time. The Royal Albert Hall ended up refunding some money to people who complained immediately about it. You must have been lucky is all I can say. You were in the minority.

  • "you can distinctly see her looking down at the autocue"

So what? And she was looking at the screen with the conductor on it. That's what it's there for! It didn't interupt her performance.

"most other performers learnt their lines better than Chin-zel."

Fucking rude. And uhmm.. out of anything to make fun of you choose her appearance when she is one of the most beautiful, stunning women in the world? :/

Oh and you are fucking fugly. You could NEVER get someone like Idina. And spice girls??

  • haha! fucking too right.

idina menzel is the best fucking singer on the planet, i'm guessing the main reason most people went to chess, was to see her! that's why i wanted to go!

    'chin-zel' wth? fuck yourself much?

anyone who disses idina menzel deserves a slap. she's the best there is no doubt about it.

  • wow..shut up, oh ha i just look this was a month ago but i still belive this is important. you do wicked..and ..rent..and aida, i think she has a pretty good memory.

  • So what if she was looking at the monitor? It shows the conductor, & I much rather have her look at the conductor & give me good show than maybe get lost in the song (which she wouldn't do anyway). Dude, Even Broadway shows have the conductors in the pit in case the performers need guidance... I thought she was amazing. She's my favorite Florence.

  • I totally agree with this comment...And I know from experience that it's REALLY hard to keep your place in a song when you can't see the conductor. Especially because this wasn't a long-running performance, she (and other actors) didn't get as much time to be really comfortable with the rhythms (which are fairly complex in this song), so I'm glad that she looked at the monitor and DELIVERED, rather than risking a mess-up (unlikely but still)

  • True, but she's a professional. She should be used to it. This was the case in the Les Mis 10th Anniversary concert and everyone was fine.

  • Yes but everybody in the Les Mis 10th Anniversary concert had been in a production of Les Mis before as the character they played in the concert version and therefore already had their character in their repertoire. I personally felt Idina did very well.... Her voice is raw and I like that.... It's a personal thing. I do love Elaine Paige's version but because of contemporary recording trends, I find her voice on the soundtrack lacks emotion. I'm sure she was better live...

  • Yup...I know before I saw some people asking if she was reading the lyrics since she kept looking down, but in the DVD you can clearly see that she's watching the conductor through the monitor.

I think she did a great job, considering the limited time for preparation. That would be difficult for ANYONE to pull off well.

  • and just above the screen with the conductor is the aauto cue, she sounded dreadful, minnie mouse does chess

  • Shame a whole chorus was left out at the end :(

Otherwise pretty good, but no Elaine Paige! Sorry!

  • Seems to be a lotta negativity towards Idina here. I personally am in total awe - she makes it look seriously effortless!

  • mmmmmmm Idina Menzel :D
