I flew for 15 years untill the company down sized.I would not trade one day of it for anything,nothing.Now after a year and half I'll be starting with a commuter.Yes I know it's allot diffrent with no seniority,lot's of legs,lot's of reserves and long road trips but I don't care.My new girlfriend accepts it and we'll work out the rough parts,she knows it's part of

They're trained to babysit the sheep that think they can still smoke and do whatever they would in a car.

I teach travel and tourism at a college. In years gone by it waas just the dollies who got the jobs and whilst ageism/fattism (is there such a word?) still exists, the airlines want the qualifications, the customer service skills, the initiative as well as the glamour.
my experience of flight attendants (in canada and the states) is that most of them go out of their way to goad passengers into shouting at them so they can call security. (in my case they have never succeeded).
on one occasion one of them lied to the pilot about me, saying i was drunk, in order to have me thrown off the flight. i subsequently made an official complaint and the attendant was dealt with.
with a few exceptions they are bullies and take their frustrations out on the customers.
As an ex-cabin crew member, I think you cynics and bad-mouthers out there ought to remember that cabin crew are there to see to passengers safety. They are at the sharp end of unimaginable rudeness, lack of manners and stupidity from some passengers every working day, but usually manage to treat everyone with courteousness and a warm smile - how many people manage that! Mock them at your peril, while youre in that aircraft, your life really is in their hands.
.....for those of you out there without a sense of humour, I have every faith in pilots. I wouldnt have done the job if I hadnt, but they are able to lock the flight deck door leaving the cabin crew to cope with the dross!

I am tired of the awful comments people make about FA's. When there is an emergency on your flight, you will change your mind. I was trained for 8 weeks on safety,1 on service and every year we have 3 days of exams (unpaid) to requalify. The priority,as it should be,is safety. On the airline I work for that is the way it is. The majority of us are very educated and friendly. Why not be more respectful to EVERYBODY?

I prefer being a waiter/bartender on the ground. I'm not forced to wear a humiliating corporate uniform, the food and drink I serve is worth eating and drinking, and most importantly, the customers I serve aren't justifiably enraged by the treatment they've received before they even see me.

piece of advice, try to be nicer. Not everybody knows what the job involves. If you are training to be a f/a you probably learned that you must be nice to everybody, no matter what they say or do (with few exceptions of course)

Oh, and everybody can't be a waiter. Well, everybody can try but many fail miserably. Beeing a good bartender / waiter need just about the same personality traits as a flight attendant. Being one, I can certify that.
if you train a monkey to do it then why do so many people who pass the first stage exams get turned then it can't be that easy otherwise everyone would get though wouldn't they? also there is far more training now than there has ever been for stewards these days plus really they are putting their lives at risk because of the increased chances of terrorism on a planes and having extensive training to look out for smugglers anyone acts out of the ordinary etc.

Food on the gruond is usually a lot better of course, and some of the uniforms are clearly more stylish than others. If you like your apron and black t-shirt better, good for you! I'm quite satisfied with my white shirt and red tie. :)

I flew with UAL for 14 years. We were (are) the most educated, least respected employee group of any airline. While the pilots got the plane in the HUDSON the FA's got them out. It was a team effort. no FA should ever allow themselves to feel like flying waiters. We are 1st class people doing are jobs.

PLEEEASE!!!!!! Now you resorting to name calling....sad. You are the one that said that pilots are "USUALLY ASLEEP OR DOING THE CROSSWORD". Doesn't seem like you feel the front end is contributing to your "TEAM WORK: model does it? Your words, not mine. When was the last time you had a decompression? Don't you make a call for doctors or nurses when a medical emergency happens, or do you all perform surgery now? And most commercial pilots do NOT hold you in as high asteem as you do yourself.

I am tired of the awful comments people make about FA's. When there is an emergency on your flight, you will change your mind. I was trained for 8 weeks on safety,1 on service and every year we have 3 days of exams (unpaid) to requalify. The priority,as it should be,is safety. On the airline I work for that is the way it is. The majority of us are very educated and friendly. Why not be more respectful to EVERYBODY?

I prefer being a waiter/bartender on the ground. I'm not forced to wear a humiliating corporate uniform, the food and drink I serve is worth eating and drinking, and most importantly, the customers I serve aren't justifiably enraged by the treatment they've received before they even see me.
In my lifetime, flying has never been anything but a degrading adventure in corporate exploitation. To romanticize the perpetrators strikes me as worse than delusional: it's a filthy lie.

Couldn't agree more - the commenter is pretty stupid. My girlfriend does this job and she told me about all the training, safety equipment etc. Serving food is only a small, visible part of the job.

piece of advice, try to be nicer. Not everybody knows what the job involves. If you are training to be a f/a you probably learned that you must be nice to everybody, no matter what they say or do (with few exceptions of course)

if you train a monkey to do it then why do so many people who pass the first stage exams get turned then it can't be that easy otherwise everyone would get though wouldn't they? also there is far more training now than there has ever been for stewards these days plus really they are putting their lives at risk because of the increased chances of terrorism on a planes and having extensive training to look out for smugglers anyone acts out of the ordinary etc.

It strikes me as a bit weird that you describe flight attendants as perpetrators of corporate exploitation. We are there for safety and service, that's all!
Food on the gruond is usually a lot better of course, and some of the uniforms are clearly more stylish than others. If you like your apron and black t-shirt better, good for you! I'm quite satisfied with my white shirt and red tie. :)
The best thing with this job for me is to make stressed out passengers happy, btw!

icanruspnw is displaying a typical case of sour grapes. Has probably applied to be a flight attendant in the past, and been rejected. If he was as negative in the interview process ashe was in his post, there is very little chance of getting a job in any airline, or any job for that matter.........

Thats a lot.... Yes, my mother was with PanAm World Airways in the 70's to the last few months of the '91. I was with PanAm World for 10 years. Then, I was just with United for 10 years.. I finished recently with them.. I am still looking to be with another airline soon.. It is passion... Totally passion for travel and seeing the sky...

I flew with UAL for 14 years. We were (are) the most educated, least respected employee group of any airline. While the pilots got the plane in the HUDSON the FA's got them out. It was a team effort. no FA should ever allow themselves to feel like flying waiters. We are 1st class people doing are jobs.
I have great respect for us all.
