Mainly because it probably is a reference to Jesus...a twisted form of it anyways. Takaya's group, Strega, believes him to be a Messiah of sorts, that his belief is absolute, that the future is worthless. He wishes for death upon the entire world, and thus, believes it to be the only salvation. That is his ultimate character flaw. And even if you don't believe a Jesus reference, his hippie like design ultimately goes against the stereotype. He hates all life, and wants to snuff everything out.

Was the game you got the FES version? That around here is easy to find and not expensive. It's the same thing except with a few new additions such as persona you can fuse and I guess extra game play. But I heard that the original Persona 3 had a limited amount of copies... At least according to the Gamestops I called looking for the game.

I always figured it was intentional that Takaya resembled the common image of Jesus. Not only does he look like him, but his behavior looks like Jesus Christ portrayed in a negative light. First off you have his frequent philosophies of salvation, then at the end he uses his charisma to start his own religion based around the end of times. He eventually becomes a martyr of sorts at the hands of the former S.E.E.S. members.

That kinda ruins it for me. I have the DS strategy guide, and in the history section it describes how Japan is still all pissed at the west for essentially colonizing Japan, but this is a bit much.  I mean, aren't a significant portion of Japanese Christian?

Actually, no. The vast majority of Japan is a mix of Shintoists and Buddhists. And believe me, this is barely the tip of the freakin' iceberg. Questioning Christianity has become so prolific in games and anime, it's about as cliche' as making the hero an overpowered spikey haired teenage swordsman with an elemental affinity to fire.
