Please email me your website @ mofojo420533@yahoo.com. I just came upon a thirty plus year old kayak like what you built and it needs new skin and it is small for my size but I would like to build one like yours I have ? S for you!!!! I love your kayak very neat
I have a couple questions. 1: What's the advantage to having a "surf kayak"? Just for fun? 2: How did you get the inner frame cutouts? 3: How long did it take you to build?
I got the specs for this kayak from Robert Morris's book, "Building Skin-on-Frame Boats". Morris shows how to build it "traditional-style", while I went with non-traditional methods. But... it's basically the same boat.
Thanks! The blue thing is called a "spray skirt". It fits tightly around your waist, and a bungee holds it to the cockpit of the kayak. If a wave breaks over the deck of the kayak, it keeps the water out. A skilled kayaker can turn the kayak upside down, and then turn it right-side-up, without getting any water inside. That's the function of the spray skirt.
I usually use ballistic nylon, but instead I used clear heavy-duty vinyl on this kayak. They sell it in the crafts/fabric department at Walmart. You can use the vinyl cement sold at Rochford Supply (online). The vinyl won't hold up as well as the nylon, but you're right - it is pretty cool!
Well Enzo - that's where you're wrong. This little kayak is a lot tougher than you might think. I've surfed it on 5' waves, and it's a real performer. I've had big waves roll me over, and 2 years later, still no damage.
I agree. I built the Morris recovery kayak and took it over ice, rocks, and 4' surf. It holds up much better than plastic kayaks as the wood and canvas flex to absorb impact. It's been 4 years now and still the original frame and skin. I sand the skin once a year and add a couple of layers of polyurethane and that's about it.
Yes I have, tabootosh. Stitch & glue, strip, and SOF (skin-on-frame). To see the newest one, go to w w w . 21stcenturykayaks . com. You can also see it in one of my other videos - "PCPC Naples on the Cocohatchee River".
Thank you for very insparing video. Very good work indeed. You made it look so easy that anyone can build one. I go get my tools right away. Keep up the good work.
This kayak is my own design. It was inspired by Robert Morris's "Recovery kayak", which was, in turn, inspired by an original north Alaska "Retrieval kayak", which is in the University Museum, at the University of Pennsylvania. You can Google search for retrieval kayak, or buy Robert Morriss's book. I can offer another option if you e-mail me at:
This is a temporary skin - heavy-duty vinyl - which I use for testing prototypes. I am currently working on a line of kits, which will use sealed ballistic nylon fabric (like inflateable boats). Watch for updates & new videos!
Jimmy buffet said he always dreamed of singing with Lightfoot. I hope he gets that wish soon .

Parabéns pelo trabalho. No Brasil não temos essa possibilidade por falta de literatura.

Jimmy Buffett and Alan Jackson - I listened to this song often, while putting the little kayak together.

What did you use for the skin? Mine is a ballistic nylon but would love to have one as clear as that.

Thanks, Dirt Jumper!
I've been a Jimmy Buffett fan for years, and couldn't think of anything that would be more fitting - glad you liked it.
