I just want to say these women have been taught for thousands of years that female circumcision is a thing to celebrate. Since they didn't actually show the circumcision itself it hard to determine which method they used. This mini explanation goes out to all those who think female genital mutilation is to do with Islam:
In islam, a married couple are meant to share pleasure with each other. if female circumcision was a part of islam, a husband and wife wouldnt be able to share pleasure with each other because female circumcision completely demolishes the nerves in the vagina. Female genital mutilation is purely a cultural practise, and is not to do with any religion. its as simple as that.
Male circumcision reduces the nerves in the penises too. No where in Islam does it say that boys need to be circumcised, either. Both male and female circumcision is cultural, and they are both done for the SAME reasons.
The enjoyment is obviously hampered by the loss of nerve endings. Sex is about feeling. Less feeling = less enjoyment. That is also why they have the practice - to reduce enjoyment so that the woman doesn't have a sex drive and can remain the piece of property that she is.

It's also something they no longer practice. They perform the ritual, but don't actually cut anything. Same goes for a lot of such cultures these days - they perform the ceremonies, make the motions, but don't cut, or only cut just enough to draw a bit of blood from the prepuce. Circumcision is actually a misnomer in the case of female genital mutilation. It means cutting around the vagina. Circum=around, cision=cut. This comes from a time when the clitoris was not considered that important for reproduction. Circumcision is just removing the clit hood which, while not nearly as bad as some other things is mutilation just the same.

what can be done about it if you live on the other side of the world. and circumsision was originally done to males so the defintion about the cut around applies only to boys, becuase there are many levels (3types in fact) of FGM.Type I FGM as the removal or splitting of the clitoral hood,with or without excision of the clitoris.
Type II refers to clitoridectomy (removal of the prepuce and the clitoris) plus the partial or total removal of the labia minora, the inner lips of the vulva and due to the sewing together of the leftover labia minora epidermis. Type III involves extensive tissue removal of the external genitalia, including all of the labia minora and the inside of the labia majora, leaving a raw open wound.
The labia majora are then held together using thorns or stitching and the girl's legs are tied together for 2-6 wks, to prevent her from moving and allow the healing of the two sides of the vulva.

If you read different literature you will find that there are variances between the different types of "circumcision" for females - just as the practice varies from tribe to tribe the descriptions vary from textbook to textbook.
There are 3 types of "circumcision": (A) This is the type you mention. The clitoris and/or the clitoral head is removed. (B) Partial: where the clitoris and all or part of the labia minora are removed. (C) Infibulation: The most severe form. The clitoris, labia minora & majora are removed, the raw edges joined together by stitches or thorns, with a pin-head sized hole left for urine & menses. The legs are bound for 40 days. The Unclassified Type is pricking, incising, burning of the vulva.
I know all that, I've been militating against genital mutilation of girls and women for decades. The type I mentioned is not the type A - in the type I mentioned, neither the clitoris nor its head are removed, only the sheath (corresponding to the foreskin in males) is partially removed.
Furthermore, it is physically impossible to remove the whole of the clitoral body (its internal portion), since its whole volume (goes deep into the body in two "branches" called the clitoral clura which reach several inches inside the body past both sides of the pubic bone. What we commonly refer to as the clitoris is in fact the clitoral glans, the external part of the clitoris. What the Masai remove is part of the hood.
So, the type of circumcision that the Masai tribe and the two other tribes from the same ethnicity (Samburu and Rendile) practice on girls is the only type that can correctly be termed circumcision, since what is removed is the equivalent of the male's foreskin, leaving the glans intact.

Circumcision has nothing to do with male domination. it's not right, but it's been happening for eons , and a flick of the thumb will not eradicate it overnight. Some matriarchal African tribes practiced (and still do) circumcision so your assumptions fail there. Paradoxically, If Maasai women were treated like cattle, then that would be a huge compliment to the Maasai...If you know your Maasai history, then you'll know why.

I remember doing research for a term paper on this and was HORRIFIED. This woman was staying next to a honeymoon hotel over there and said she heard blood-curdling screams from the place. I can imagine why.

I think the girl should wait till she is old enough to choose for herself and have proper medical care if she decides to go through it. Male circumcision in Africa is just as bad, the wait until they are adults, then right after chopping the tip off with a regular blade, they send him to live in the wild until his wound heals. A lot of people die doing this, men and women.

@y318 I don't support that either, but I would say it's a bit different for 2 reasons: 1) when done in a hospital, it doesn't hurt as badly. Some say it's for hygienic reasons, which has proved false, but for those who do it for that --> 2) the intention behind is not to take someone's sexual pleasure away, which is the reason given for female circ.

If the clitoris is removed, the woman instead learns to focus her attention on the pleasure to be derived from penetration. This mini explanation goes out to all those who think female genital mutilation is to do with Islam:
In islam, a married couple are meant to share pleasure with each other. if female circumcision was a part of islam, a husband and wife wouldnt be able to share pleasure with each other because female circumcision completely demolishes the nerves in the vagina. The enjoyment is obviously hampered by the loss of nerve endings. Sex is about feeling. Less feeling = less enjoyment. That is also why they have the practice - to reduce enjoyment so that the woman doesn't have a sex drive and can remain the piece of property that she is.
It's horrible that those practices are there, for males and for females. It's sad and it's dangerous. Traditional Jewish circumcision carries high risks of infection as well. The human ignorance is scary.

Just because something is a part of one's traditional culture does not make it ok. Neither does it mean that there is something wrong with the culture itself. It is known that female genital circumcision has HUGE consequences for a woman.

MALE circumcision (removal of foreskin) is proven to reduce the risk of cancer of the penis and STDs in hot, dry countries where regular daily access to water for washing is a problem.
Female genital mutilation is NOT reccomended in the Bible, and has no health or other benefits. A deplorable and uncivilised practice.
MALE circumcision was part of God's covenant with Abraham, but was abolished as a religious obligation (along with dietary restrictions etc) when Christ fulfilled the law.

The form of pussy cutting performed in South East Asia is more benign than the form of medical male circumcision done in Western hospitals where the head of the glands is denuded and the frenelum removed (equivalent to removing the clit). You (and many others) cultural biases can't see this.
Speaking of biases, a lot of the so called medical studies are controversial and were devised for one purpose, to propagate the myths about Male Genital Mutilation.

Wow controversial, the maasai tribes I met in Kenya don't practice FGM because they believe it is mutilation, yet they still practice the dance because it is part of there culture that they do not want to leave behind. It's also something they no longer practice. They perform the ritual, but don't actually cut anything. Same goes for a lot of such cultures these days - they perform the ceremonies, make the motions, but don't cut, or only cut just enough to draw a bit of blood from the prepuce. They still hack off foreskins with joyous abandon, though.

Circumcision is actually a misnomer in the case of female genital mutilation. It means cutting around the vagina. Circum=around, cision=cut. This comes from a time when the clitoris was not considered that important for reproduction. Circumcision is just removing the clit hood which, while not nearly as bad as some other things is mutilation just the same.
And for all of you who say that male and female genital mutilation is bad I really don't see you doing anything about it.

what can be done about it if you live on the other side of the world. and circumsision was originally done to males so the defintion about the cut around applies only to boys, becuase there are many levels (3types in fact) of FGM.Type I FGM as the removal or splitting of the clitoral hood,with or without excision of the clitoris.

Type III involves extensive tissue removal of the external genitalia, including all of the labia minora and the inside of the labia majora, leaving a raw open wound.

There is not too much information out there, it is often lack of education about natural genitalia and reproductive function which help perpetrate the crimes of gential mutilation of children. Understand that with these guys there is some sort of spiritual symbolism involved as is in many other religions. In christianity however, it is understood that God doesn't require an external circumcision as being an external example of our faith rather than an outward manifestation of our inner spiritual being showing the image of God. The entire organ is removed (true, they don't rummage above and remove the internal branches) but men should remember that this is at very least the equivalent of removing the glans of the penis and more accurately the entire penis. There are 3 types of "circumcision": (A) This is the type you mention. The clitoris and/or the clitoral head is removed. (B) Partial: where the clitoris and all or part of the labia minora are removed. (C) Infibulation: The most severe form. The clitoris, labia minora & majora are removed, the raw edges joined together by stitches or thorns, with a pin-head sized hole left for urine & menses. The legs are bound for 40 days. The Unclassified Type is pricking, incising, burning of the vulva.

Furthermore, it is physically impossible to remove the whole of the clitoral body (its internal portion), since its whole volume (goes deep into the body in two "branches" called the clitoral clura which reach several inches inside the body past both sides of the pubic bone. What we commonly refer to as the clitoris is in fact the clitoral glans, the external part of the clitoris. What the Masai remove is part of the hood.
