I'm trying to get my head around this, about the terminology... You say D Dorian and that means it's in the key of C because it's the only scale with D as the second note?
I was confused for a while and thought C Dorian meant this scale, as in I'm playing the Dorian mode of the C scale. But C Dorian is actually in the key of A Sharp because that's the only scale with C as the second note, correct?
@x1te Dorian of any key is that specific key center starting on the second degree or note of the parent scale. For example: D Dorian is C major starting on the D. A Dorian is a G major scale starting on A (the second note). C Dorian is the second mode of the Bb (A#) major scale. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.
this is a good explanation! ive been trying to crack the secret of the modes for a little now, this explanation helps, and will keep helping as i watch more videos, hahahaa
I really can't find any fault with your teaching style. No vain skill demonstration demotivating the beginner, nothing to fast or too slow explained. All well structured, contents are not mixed up, perfect knowledge of harmonics and playing styles and everything else. Lucky hand on not boring listeners. -> PERFECT TEACHER! Best around.
how does this help in solo's and articulation of fills and such? Because it seems that the scales pretty much hit the same notes anyway? sorry I'm still kinda of confused regarding the purpose of modes. can you explain for example how this would apply in a 1,4,5,6 chord progression for example.
A great question. The purpose for me is to be able to start an idea anywhere on the instrument and still fall within the key. In your 1,4,5,6 pattern example, knowing the modes will allow you to start the scale pattern anywhere within that progression. The modes are for the player to emphisize the chord tones. You can play a major scale all day over that group of chords, but it's blah. Modes give you other patterns and shapes to build lines, figures, arppeggios and the like. Hope that helps.
Well, I see you had a birthday sometime ago. I'm so sorry. But you knew you couldn't have stayed 39 forever. But I'm 52 myself - it's not all that bad really, and you look like a strong kind of guy - I think you'll do OK. Just don't look back, and try to keep a positive outlook. Good luck.
where can i use this scale? where can i find people playing this?

Truly scary business Joe! Thanks for posting. Ionian, Dorian, hell this is gonna take a lot of memorizing.

Not as scary as you may think, but then again...
I think it's like any other skill you master. Repetition is the key. Not really difficult, just a bit tedious sometimes. Have fun!
