For most of the movie I really identified with the kid. But when she said "Why doesn't he love me?" . . . I really felt for her . . . a lot.

Dito. We see her love for him throughout the whole movie, but not until she's breaking down do we see how much she really cares.
Does she go in for a kiss after she says "Why doesn't he love me?" and William pushes her away?
