you said that it wont lose any data or space right? right now i got 1tb hard drive and around 9xxGB of stuff in their and 44gb left which i dont need anymore does that mean ill lose some stuff from my hard drive cause im reading the comments and people saying it turns into 16GB and some of them say it doesnt work but i want it to work for my PS3 but yours an xbox even if i format it to FAT32 logical

  • thank you so very much.

    my dilemma

i have a hdtv with usb recording and i just plugged in a hard drive.then after it kept on saying NO USB DEVICES,i looked on youtube,i found your video and using that ingenious GUI program.i then formatted the hard drive to fat32 and after i reconnected the external hard drive it then said INITIALIZED RECORDING

and now i have a fully functional hdtv with a external recorder and it's all thanks to you darkgreenguitarist.

    a highly recommended youtuber.

  • @BRUTALSHANZ1988 thanks for your appreciation, im glad i helped you

  • tnx bro :)

  • FOR XP USERS TO FIND THE COMPUTER MANAGEMENT

COPY AND PASTE THIS In The (Run..) Tab on the Start Menu.

    compmgmt.msc

  • look m8 im not normally one for bitching ur ment to b showin us how to partition so y have u already got 3 partitions if ur gonna make a tutorial at least start from the begining for fuck sake

  • Thanks a lot for posting this video. I really appreciate it. You saved not only me, but thousands of others countless amounts of stress and confusion. Thanks again.

  • just in case, but can you revert back, to normal?

  • @bl1ndguy0 yes you can, i made another video showing this, il message you or just look on my channel

  • Works, but I formatted 200 GB and my Xbox 360 only sees 16 GB. Any idea what to do? D':

  • @OhMrBigshot91 Hey Im glad the formatting went well, unfortunately microsoft only allows you to format up 16gb, it sucks right. look at the link in the description for xbox users and look at "Option 2: Configure a portion of the USB flash drive (up to 16 GB)" sorry I cant help any more!

  • Hello, you did what I can't seem to accomplish!!! I have a 3TB Hitachi Touro, I have it partitioned in 2 sections 2.5TB NTSC, and 250GB FAT32... When I connect it to the X Box slim to configure the 250gb partition, it reads the drive, shows up as 250GB, yet when I go to configure it. It says "Can't perform this action" was wondering if you could help me out here???

  • @ctrackmonger Hello, the xbox will only let you format 16gb as storage, search this in google for more advice or use the link in the description. The one thing that i can suggest is to make the partition only 16gb, do not use guiformat to change it to FAT32, In disk management right click the 16gb NTFS partition then click format, next on the drop down change it to fat32.windows will format it becauseit is less then 30gb :/ Hope it works

  • why have u disabled the rating on this video? it should be one of the top rated :D

  • @GladiatorOfBahrain Thanks dude I've just changed it, rate it all you want now! :)

  • FUCKING WORKED MON!!! GOOD SHIT... BEST VID, I SUBSCRIBED TO UR CHANNEL CUZ OF IT.

  • going to test it right now, you made my day !

  • Can I do this on Windows XP SP2? can I split a 320GB external hdd to 160GB ntfs and 160GB fat32?

  • @AvidAngels Hello thanks for your question, the answer is yes, it is posible but only if your up to the challenge. there are links for for XP for the method on how to do it in the description. If your not up to the task, ask a friend with windows 7. Let me know how you get on

  • @darkgreenguitarist The method is to boot from liveCD using windows xp machine, I can do that straight away with my laptop on ubuntu 11.04 gParted Partition editor. I just want to know if Windows XP has the abality to edit external hdd partition

  • thx buddy ur asome

  • got another question. after you make the partition can you join them back again.

for example: 100gb ntfs and 100gb Fat32 then make it back to 200gb ntfs

  • @THUF3 yes you can, simply delete the FAT32 partition so it is black (unallocated) then right click on the NTFS part and click extend volume. Its the best way I've found to do this :D

  • @THUF3 I made a Video showing you how take a look on my channel or add this to your browser /watch?v=bj1BMpUnzT8

  • sorry about this question may be stupid but i need to know..

i already got 100gb of data on my external hard drive if i do this will it delete the data??

    thanks

  • @THUF3 If you follow correctly, you wont lose anything. If you look closely at 1:51 I already have 465Gb and 195Gb of partitions full of stuff that doesnt get effected.

  • @darkgreenguitarist thanks a lot for replying, i just needed to make sure. cheers!!!

  • Thank you. Excellent tutorial mate.

  • Thanks man been needing this!

  • thanks for this, works like a charm

  • @ShanewithanS Glad to Help! Sub Please if you like. Cheers

  • i dont know crap about doing all this stuff....but this video worked pppeeeerrrrfeectly thanks a bunch!

  • Hi, I formatted my 1TB Lacie HDD to FAT32, but when I did, my HDD was only +/- 500GB ?! What the hell, I formatted back to NTFS but it's still only 500GB ?8 How come?

  • @TheShaikh1991 hey, that sounds annoying! did you use GUIformat, if you do it wont half thwe drive. try to delete the volume again to a raw unallocated partition then see how big it is. when it goes back to 1tb, remove and reconnect, windows will say it has to be formatted, so format it to NTFS. then format using guiformat to fat32, hope it works!

  • nice video! Thanks!

  • Hey I followed all of these steps and whenever I went back on to my Xbox it was still only 16GB of space. The whole thing is 320GB but only 16 is for the xbox..

  • @funkyoldcheese789 Hi, if you want to use the formatted drive as a storage device, microsoft has only allowed you to format 16gb only. To find out more search " xbox format usb flash as a storage device " in google.

  • @darkgreenguitarist thanks bro.

  • hi

  • @darkgreenguitarist i downloaded off of the game marketplace so yea legally

  • After shrinking it, can I like 'merge' the partitions again?

  • @Kurusedo yes you can, simply reverse the steps : delete the volume to make it unallocated then extend the other partition the full amount! i might make a vid:D

  • @darkgreenguitarist Okay thank you. :D

  • Mine external file system is exFAT, It's also not giving me the option to shrink the volume. The option is just faded away. Can I be doing something wrong?

  • @AlucardOVA666 Hey, to shrink the volume it has to be NTFS, if you want the whole drive to be FAT32 then just use Guiformat straight away. If you want partitions them format the drive to NTFS then follow my steps.if you need any help message me

  • @darkgreenguitarist I already figured it out thanks. It was right after I posted the comment. I just skipped shrinking the volume and just went straight to Guiformat. My PS3 seems to read my external now so that seemed to work. Thanks for your help.

  • i have a 250gb seagate external hard drive an i recently downloaded gta san andreas for my xbox and it sayed i needed a xbox 360 hard drive to play original xbox games so i bought the seagate hard drive and i want to know how how to make this hard drive work for the game plzz help

  • Thanks for this :)

  • YOU JUST MADE MY NIGHT.....IVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE THIS OUT FOR THE LONGEST TIME, GAVE UP, AND NOW TRIED AGAIN.....WORKS GREAT!!!

  • Thanks you are the man!

  • thak you it works perfect for my WD 2TB external hard drive...

  • hey can someone please awnser me? what if i had a 1 tb harddrive would it still work with all that memory on the xbxo 360 ???? someone please awnser!!

  • @sexyboylovesak yea it should work fine

  • @darkgreenguitarist thanks im gonna test it out then

  • @sexyboylovesak it work for me partitioning 60gb. Fat32 is usually for 32GB. Try it what do you have to lose?

  • You are the man!!!!! Worked great thanx

  • Thanks man this really helped!! saved a long ass journey back to best buy for them just to do it lool!!

  • Thanks Man finally got the thing to work.. i first tried swissknife that failed.. and now this actually has it all now and i only took 136kb out of 1.5TB :) Thanks again man.

  • thanks it works really nice

  • Thanks bro.... this helped. no ican download ps3 games and play them from my harddrive and upload music etc... thanks alot!!!!

  • This is brilliant thanks alot ... Helped me decide whether to have NTFS or FAT32.. and your solution 'Have Both' Love it thanks alot man :) Thumbs up

  • if i do this can i put a xbox 360 game in my external CD drive ? and it will play

  • Can anybody tell me how to add big files (like 10GB) to external HDD?

  • @Ettoize what file is this 10gb? a bluray movie?

  • So... After you partition your Xbox 360, then what? Can you install another OS on it, like Linux or Windows? Would it even recognize the drivers needed for Xbox?

  • @theif519 this is for external drives, say for playing music or movies on the xbox. the 360 reads FAT and FAT32 formated drives, it will not read NTFS drives. the only thing people have problems is formatting a whole drive and losing half the space. using GUIformat fixes this problem allowing you to your whole drive. you cannot install an OS

  • how do i install mac os to my new partition? pm me so i can get it faster than comment and be able to see it easier IF you can help me or anyone else.

  • My whold Hdd is formated to fat32 but when i plug into myps3 the ps3 only shows like 29-30 or so Gbs why?!?!? please i really need to upgrade!!

  • thank you very much

  • guiformat wont recognize my HDD

  • every time i click on shrink volume it gives me this message

the system cannot find the file specified

is there a reason why this keeps showing up?

  • So after we format it, we could just plug it into the 360 and the 360 would read it?

  • @MyWowable yes the 360 reads FAT and FAT32 formated drives, it will not read NTFS drives. the only thing people have problems is formatting a whole drive and losing half the space. using GUIformat fixes this problem allowing you to your whole drive.

  • what does allocation unit size mean? I have options in the drop down menu, its currently set at 32768 but there is an option for 65536?

  • @dodoegg1 Hey, it means the size of the partition that you would like to create. so if you want want a gigabite of space to use, alocate the size to 1024, for 10 gig, 10240 etc.

  • Comment removed

  • dude props to u it perfectly worked with my 2TB Seagate but i didn't format the NTFS like you did. i just went on my comp , right clicked the hard drive and formatted on a full(not quick format). took hours but worth it. then i quick formatted to fat32 to with the software you provided. the full format with the program takes ages. i am using your way of formatting with my an old 1.5tb Seagate. hope it works. thanks again

  • how do i make sure that the data remains in the ntfs part of the drive?

  • @thebroadcastviewer Hey, when you shrink your drive, you can only shrink your free amount of space, not space with data, so that means you dont lose anything!

  • @darkgreenguitarist thanks Imma go try this ...

  • @thebroadcastviewer Hope it goes okay for you, let me know how it works

  • @darkgreenguitarist it's looking pretty good so far, I haven't tried it with the PS3 yet though. Anyways, thank you so much for the help.

  • Sooooooooooo many thanx to you! :) Its great, and it worx.

  • it worked

  • thx thats gr8 :D

  • Thx mate

  • thanks alot man :)

  • so that means data in other partitions aint deleted? o.O

  • @nikhilesh26 Yes Exactly!!

  • ok i got the extrnl hard drive formatted. but, i cant copy the movies to it from my ps3, the files get corrupted

  • @darkgreenguitarist quite a while, i had like 140 movies on it. and i took it to my cousines because he wanted some movies, and hasnt worked since.. i got a new WD external. but its not showing up on my ps3, work on computer though. do i need to format it?

  • @n9neteen83 if it is NTFS format it will have to be FAT32 to work, so yes format it

  • Thanks! spent hours looking and this has been the easiest solution!

  • ive been having problems with my usb hard drive.its a WD. i was using it to watch movies with it on my ps3. now my ps3 wont read it, and when i plug it in it beeps. saying that its plugged in. but when i go to disk management its not there. but if i got to device manager, and click on disk drives on the right, at the bottom of that list, it says WD. would that be my external hard drive?

  • @n9neteen83 sounds like your drive might be faulty :( its not good that its not showing up in disk managment. how long did you use it before it started playing up?

  • after formating the external hd can you also install the games from the cd like you can with the xbox on to the external hd?

  • @Sahota018 it says you can on the xbox site, I've messaged you the link to the xbox site

  • nice vid thanks dude !

  • what the name of this song? i like it

  • The song is; "A Muted Moment" by Small Leaks Sink Ships

  • wow ty i really never coment when i watch videos this is like my 3rd coment and y deserve it tyvm

  • The problem you guys are having is that you think this tutorial will allow you to play files larger than over 4gb, it won't. As far as I know there is no really good solution for that unless you use dvd r's or dvd dl or dvd rw as they are a different format, joliett I think. the ps3 will never see a file larger than 4gb on an external device because you can't put a file bigger than that on a fat 32 partition, and ps3 doesn't recognize the ntfs format. Plese tell me how i'm wrong.Thx

  • @PanhEaD8675 Hey, tell me the problem these guys are having. None of them say that files are not showing up, resons being they are over 4gb. as for w8t2009's problem, hes having trouble upgrading his existing 20gb hdd with a 250gb hdd, not an externeral drive.

  • god just brought a 640gb hard drive for my ps3 and wanted to back the original one up before i put it in and i was having trouble. I LOVE YOU!!!...

  • I bought a 250 gb HD for my xbox 360 off the ebay. (XBOX 360 HDD) and i formated it with fat32 with the program u mentioned. But my xbox dont recognize it. It says No storage? device found. What should i do? throwing it out the window soooooon thanks

  • @w8t2009 No dont throw it lol XD ho wdid you format it in the first place? i mean did you connect it to your pc using a transfer cable or remove it from the enclosure? My tutorial is for external HDD's, unfortunately im not sure what format xbox HDD have to be to work as a storage device, but there may be a way to make it work

  • @darkgreenguitarist

I conntected the harddirve to my Xbox 360 through the transfer cable. And in the memory menu I formated the drive as a USB storage. And after that my xbox 360 dont recognize it even when I format it with FAT32. The drive have no partition and is pretty much useless. Can I save it some how? You would be a hero if you could lol thanks anyways

  • @w8t2009 hey , sounds like your having a lot of trouble. you say in the 'memory menu', are you pluging it back into the xbox via usb transfer cable? All i can suggest is to remove th hard drive from the xbox enclosure, putting it into another enclosure or straight to the pc via SATA cable. then see if the pc picks it up as a drive. let me know how you get on :)

  • @darkgreenguitarist when I connect the harddrive to my computer through the usb transfer cable the computer picks up the harddrive I can acess it and format it etc.

But it wont work on my xbox 360. it dont recognize it att all. seen other harddrives and they have partitions 1 to 3. Mine is blank empty. let me know if u need futher infomations in order to help me

  • @w8t2009 Ok , you want to use your drive for saving games , not just music, videos and photos right? you said that It says No storage? but device found yes?

Now your drive is FAT32 you can only use it as media storage, BUT if your device is found, you could try formatting 16GB for save game use.# On your console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.# Select Memory.# On the Storage Devices screen, select Storage Device. # select configure now and confirm. see if you can do this!

  • @darkgreenguitarist My computer finds the drive. But my xbox doesnt.

Just tried what you told me. When I go to memory it says "no storage device"

  • @w8t2009 i have the same problem!

  • @w8t2009 i have the same problem!

  • Question who sings that song and thanks for the run down on video awesome job!!!!!!!!

  • @XxLzoxX sorry its a song from audioswap, cant remember what tho XD

  • Hi - I really need your help. I have just purchases a 'Seagate Expansion Portable External Hard drive'. It will not play on my Xbox 360. I am unsure whether to follow what you have posted or not.

    1) I presume its best to back up everything

    2) if it doesnt work can I put my hard drive back to how it was before?

Also if i partition it between FAT32 and NTFS will it be able to work on both my PC, laptop to transfer documents and my Xbox 360?

What amount of Gb do i need in each partition?

  • @AshPhysiotherapy hey, yes i would backup every thing to your pc to be safe. then you can try partitioning and formatting to what every space you would like.the reason i made this tutorial is because using the FAT32 format option shrinks your drive normally in half !!! and dont worry, you can put it back to its original state easily. let me know how you got on :)

  • @AshPhysiotherapy I have just purchases a 1TB Seagate Expansion Portable External Hard drive so i can use with my ps3and i'm having trouble formating it to Fat32. The only option I have is exFat. What to do? The video didn't help. Can U?

  • @OLaN420 hi, what dont you understand from the vid? are you using windows 7?

  • @OLaN420 Hey, youhave to format it to NTFS first! then go on with the vid!

  • will this work if my 60gb reads as usb only 16gb

  • NICE MAN!...it reallt helped me alot...

whooo.... after a life time of long search for a solution for my 1TB WD elements....ive found a solution...thank you...thank you...thank you...

nice job...keep up the good work...

  • thanks a million I have been searching for ways to format my drive to FAT32 all day going through useless programs and command prompt, nothing actually formatted the drive but the program you suggested to use. It formatted the drive in under a minute. You rock! Thank you!

  • I would not recommend this. it slows the hard drive down and the device will not be as reliable as it used to be. some files cannot be copied and the hard drive will also not be as secure as it was.

if you do this yow will also lose some features.

    nice vid but.

but the only reason i would do this is you are not planning to use the drive for much more the holding video and music or for using it with consoles like the ps3 or x box

  • @cathalloh well thats the idea, using it for consoles and to be compatable for mac.

also about your coment on slowing down the drive, i have had no issues at all. my partitions 1, 2 and 3 work perfect! I would love to know these other 'features' you loose so educate me.

  • Can You use it as a storage for 360

  • @DTXGee Hello, to use your drive with you xbox 360 it first has to either FAT of FAT32 (so just follow my tutorial) . Then on your xbox, you have to choose how much space you would like to use as an xbox 360 storage device. The maximum microsoft allows is 16GB. After setting up your storage to be used as a 360 save device, the xbox creates a hidden folder on your drive in which it archives the data you save on it. Hope that helps, and if you still dont understand, il make a new vid explaining.

  • OMG! Thanks! I love you!!!!!!!

  • Yo Darkfreenguitarist Thanks a bunch This helped me so much i returned my 500gb hardrive today cause it wouldnt work with my ps3 so i went and go another one at futureshop but this one was a 1TB and using ur Fat32 program u showed made it work thanks a bunch dude u saved me another trip to Futureshop :D

  • This is such a fuckin' GOOD guide. It's so simple, clear and easy to follow. Probably one of the best tuts ive seen. Thanks so much, i can finally transfer and boot my ps2 isos off my external and play them on my ps3 now. thanks alot

  • Heyy , I would like to know because i make a partition in my hard drive external and i convert to ntfs to fat32 and i want to know if i reformat my pc is my folder in my hard drive external will still be there.

Thank you again for the tutorial.

  • @akaprince864 hey im trying to understand your question, are you saying if you reformat your pc, will files on your external hardrive still be on there? well all you have to do is disconnect the drive if your pc and from the power if your worried and your formatting wont disrupt anything on the external. is this what you mean? oh and no worries man :D
