Great job clearing this up. It's amazing just how many people get it wrong. I, too, am completely sick of the "Master of Puppets" references when they're simply wrong.
People are now saying E1m1 is from Black Mayne, yet again remember how we said similar, Black Mayne copied it, and not just from Metallica, like 4 other Metal artists.
Finally someone else who knows the actual song behind this classic doom theme I've had to do the same and play both like that to show people how they relate
@sonicclang perhaps I should have made myself more clear. Open E1M1 in a MIDI editor such as Anvil Studio, mute or delete all tracks except the drums and listen to it.
I always thought that E1M1 was No Remorse, but I recently broke it up into a MIDI editor and realised that the drum track is somewhat similar to MOP's. I still think that it's no remorse, but now I have some doubts.
@SharkWADs How would opening the midi make you think it SOUNDS more like Master of Puppets? That doesn't make any sense. A song either sounds like another one or not. Looking at the sheet music has nothing to do with it.
"Это Рок" listen to that!!!!! Its from a russian Band called Aria, that song apperad 1985 i guess. That sounds more like the Doom theme, than No remorse! I found that info at an another Doom Vid. Search it here at Youtube i think it was the first vid. ;)
I was wondering if you accept requests. I've been dying to figure out what song from the level Metal( map 8 Final doom TNT Evilution) actually is, or if it's a track all on it's own. Also just wanted to let you know, that I thought this was MOP for a very long time. It wasn't until watching this video did I learn the truth lol!
finally! Sonic Clang needs a medal for actually being the (seemingly) few who know that the E1M1 Hangar Theme IS NOT Master of Puppets! It says that it's No Remorse on so many doom sites, that why would someone (unless you never checked the sites or heard of No Remorse) think it was Master of Pupets?
That's awesome dude. Thanks for this. I love Doom and i'm always telling people how the music is inspired by great bands. You know, e1m1 DOES have a flavor of Master of Puppets. It's only because the tuning is so similar and the way it's played. The difference, besides the fact that it's OBVIOUSLY no remorse, is just the pacing. But to someone that isn't totally into Metallica, that's the most recognised tune, and they all have that Metallica flavor. Simple mix up i'd say. Good clarification.
Btw, I just listened to Behind The Cooked Cross, and there's about a 10 second section that sounds similar (about 0:22 - 0:32), but I never would have noticed without looking for it. (Yes, I know it's E3M3).
You thoroughly made your point, but, since I thought E1M1 and MoP were the same song from ages 5 to 14, I'll probably still think of it as MoP; even though, I figured out, after playing DOOM for myself several years ago, that they weren't the same.
P.S. You should have played some of MoP side by side to prove your point further.
it piss's me off when jak offs, who say there huge matellica fans, try convence me that this tune is master of puppets.so glad i found this vid coz i can prove there not matellica fans.cheers sonicclang.
Oh yeah that's definitaly no remorse you can tell right away I think people tend to think its like master of puppets because of the second riff after the intro its sort of but not really parts of master of puppets kind of sound like it but isn't
How anyone thinks its MOP inspired must not actually play a guitar outside of a plastic one that plugs into a games console.
there are no more than 4 or 5 notes difference between each part of the harmonies and the actual line from no remorse, which is exactly enough to avoid copyright infringement.
do people actually use their ears these days or what?
@Anttizii Not really. Just because a guitarist bounces between the E and A string that doesn't mean it sounds like E1M1. That's a really common style of song writing.
@sonicclang it's kind of annoying how you chastise people for not seeing the subtle differences in the songs. They're different, yes, but not everyone can tell. When I played doom to my friend on guitar he said master if puppets straight away. It's just what people think of.
@sonicclang Lol. But seriously, even my hardcore Metallica fan friend said master of puppets. It's just a more famous riff than no remorse. Thats why there's confusion.
So because the HARMONY of E1M1 sounds like No Remorse, that means the song sounds like No Remorse? Wonder if anybody clued you in that the melody is the most prominent part of any piece, and the melody is more similar to Master of Puppets than No Remorse. But whatever. Just making sense here.
@sonicclang No, it sounds "a little" like a small part of the intro to Master of Puppets. Which is better than it sounding "absolutely nothing" like No Remorse. You take this debate too seriously, as evidenced by the extremely pretentious nature of this video, and it blinds you from an objective, unbiased observation.
you know, i ACTUALLY thought the SAME thing, i was making a list of songs that are similar to video game soundtrack, one of them was no remorse and doom.

you are right but the only reason i think master of puppets pop into people's head is cuz its a more well known song and it sounds kind of similar but no remorse is so much closer sounding... anyways
Wow, you're all wrong. E1M1 is most inspired by "Behind the Crooked Cross" by Slayer. But you clearly are obsessed with being right about it being No Remorse. You seem like a dick.
Sounds more like the intro to 'D.R.I. - Hooked' to me. Or the Riffs in the verses of 'Slayer - Behind the Crooked Cross'. But I think that rhythm pattern is popular and used a lot in metal.

Love your video......I like it when another musician sticks to his argument and backs it up with specific musical elements, and then plays it on the guitar.......great tone by the way! On a side note, I've been thinking of covering that E1M1 theme, but as it sounded on the 3D0. It's slower than the E1M1 theme played on all the other ports of Doom, but I think the slower tempo suits the song better, imho.
@TheJoebama Well I didn't write that. I have no idea who put that on there. Youtube software must have put that on there, but it surely wasn't me. If anything it's a "Youtube software engineer fail".
Not only does No Remorse sound closer to E1M1 but the song perfectly describes the game, Another Day Another Death, All Hells Breaking Loose, Bodies are Mounting. Doom guy doesn't care who he kills cuz he's badass. Master of Puppets is about drug addiction, not killing the minions of satan.
I totally agree on this one, I've listened to the other songs that are supposedly similar to E1M1 but they're not nearly as close to it as no remorse.
Well actually i heard lot of video game song similar to E1M1. Did they ripoff it from Doom or just a coincedence. A good example are "MIghty Wind Fate Unlimited code" and "F-Zero X: EXpansion Kit "Big Foot" Music "
wow the E1M1 sounds like Master Of Puppets!! Just kidding ;P In fact I always say to people that this ain't nothing like MoP, maybe just a tiny little bit.
Jesus God people master of puppets is completely different from No Remorse People Pay attention to the year of the albums from metallica and listen to the Lead Guitar of No Remorse and the Lead Guitar Part of E1M1 they Clearly sound the same ill even Post a video Link of My Buddy John Playin the Lead Guitar part Of No Remorse just to prove Sonics point
i think people think its master of puppets cause the doom thing is in the same key as masters, no remorse, was played higher. the doom thing they changed because they could not copy. i think thats just it right.
I just realized why this provides so much confusion: in No Remorse, the guitar is way behind the voice in the mix, so some people might not hear the riff clearly, but in the intro of Master Of Puppets, it's right in your face, so obviously some people are going to hear the more OBVIOUS similarity, even though it's much LESSER.
ok first of all lets get one thing clear- i agree with you that its more like no remorse.now- i hadent heard either metallica song until a few days ago, i heard master of puppets and though "where did i hear that before?" i did some searches and had a moment of nostalgia when i realized it was Doom. i looked around to see if i was right and found this video. after watching i agree with you but i can see how people think its master of puppets if they havent heard either in a while. I did.
you remind me of my friend who always wants to be right. if it reminds people of master of puppets, so fucking what, should it bother you? nah, go live your life.
E1M1 seems slightly up tempo compared to No Remorse. That section from No Remorse, :21 from Master of Puppets, and E1M1 are all very similar. Most people compare it to MoP because that's the more popular song. It sounds like a mashup of both songs to me because it is the same melody as from No Remorse but it is played on the same area of the neck as Master. Regardless it is cool as hell.
I really don't see how people can take this song as something from MOP... Not much of a fan eh! Still its really awsome, I can't believe Ive never noticed it before, I played Doom alot 10 years ago :-D
the reason for everyone saying master of puppets is because its a more recent and more popular song than no remorse. well now we know, thanks sonicclang!
well yes Ill bite I originally did think master of Puppets but, that is because I never actually heard No remorse XD. But, yeah correct it defenitely does relate quite well.
yea whenever my teacher says the word "always" he pronounces it like "alwes"... sounds like a cross between an irishman and some white guy from minnesota

@mkfreak90 Amazing argument! I'm very surprised no one has ever brought that up.
sonicclang 1 year ago
@sonicclang Indeed.
DerTeufel0707 1 year ago
i think no e1m1 is mostly like no remorse, i just barely hear anything similar from master of puppets..
DerTeufel0707 1 year ago
I totally agree on this one, I've listened to the other songs that are supposedly similar to E1M1 but they're not nearly as close to it as no remorse.
nekokonekosama 1 year ago
Well actually i heard lot of video game song similar to E1M1. Did they ripoff it from Doom or just a coincedence. A good example are "MIghty Wind Fate Unlimited code" and "F-Zero X: EXpansion Kit "Big Foot" Music "
Xeomuz 1 year ago
I have not heard of ''No remorse'' and i think actually that sounds more like it...
Because i have only heard Master of Puppets and doom and that was what i Thought was the only thing that could compare... but i proves wrong!
Thanks man, it really helpd my mind!
And now i'm going to listn on No Remorse !!!
And BTW great video !!!!
finaly231 1 year ago
wow the E1M1 sounds like Master Of Puppets!! Just kidding ;P In fact I always say to people that this ain't nothing like MoP, maybe just a tiny little bit.
TheMultiBart 1 year ago
Jesus God people master of puppets is completely different from No Remorse People Pay attention to the year of the albums from metallica and listen to the Lead Guitar of No Remorse and the Lead Guitar Part of E1M1 they Clearly sound the same ill even Post a video Link of My Buddy John Playin the Lead Guitar part Of No Remorse just to prove Sonics point
skittlecrew1 1 year ago
i think people think its master of puppets cause the doom thing is in the same key as masters, no remorse, was played higher. the doom thing they changed because they could not copy. i think thats just it right.
judoman25 2 years ago
@judoman25 All three, E1M1, Master of Puppets, and No Remorse are in the key of E. Very bad argument.
sonicclang 1 year ago
hey sonicclang are you going to make other tracks to e2m1-e4m9 ?
Psychicgothboy 2 years ago 2
@Psychicgothboy Nope, sorry.
sonicclang 2 years ago
I just realized why this provides so much confusion: in No Remorse, the guitar is way behind the voice in the mix, so some people might not hear the riff clearly, but in the intro of Master Of Puppets, it's right in your face, so obviously some people are going to hear the more OBVIOUS similarity, even though it's much LESSER.
But yep... No Remorse definitely.
vanishy0urself 2 years ago
ok first of all lets get one thing clear- i agree with you that its more like no remorse.now- i hadent heard either metallica song until a few days ago, i heard master of puppets and though "where did i hear that before?" i did some searches and had a moment of nostalgia when i realized it was Doom. i looked around to see if i was right and found this video. after watching i agree with you but i can see how people think its master of puppets if they havent heard either in a while. I did.
dragonrayquaza 2 years ago
you remind me of my friend who always wants to be right. if it reminds people of master of puppets, so fucking what, should it bother you? nah, go live your life.
funkyshade 2 years ago
I am living my life, thank you. I spent about 4 hours making this video a couple years ago. Trust me, the subject is not keeping me up at night.
sonicclang 2 years ago
"Does that sound FARMILIAR?"
KUTProductions 2 years ago
Ah... I thought it was Master of Puppets' main riff.
You know, the riff in No Remorse's chorus is really hard to hear, or maybe it's just me.
But yep, it makes sense now.
dbzsony 2 years ago
i met some people sayn the Metallica was inspired by E1M1 not the other way. yes its funny and stupid. poor idiots...
GfCommando 2 years ago
@GfCommando Wow! Ok, now anyone saying that is a flat out moron. Doom was made way after either No Remorse or Master of Puppets.

Cant we all agree that the rifts from master of puppets and no remorse sound alike?
Thats how metalica makes there songs anyway, change the rift up a lil and add in some bad ass solos.
xscottx019 2 years ago
@xscottx019 No, I won't agree to that. You fail.
sonicclang 2 years ago
lol it is no remorse i hate ppl who say it is MOP
MyNameIsAntiChrist 2 years ago
E1M1 seems slightly up tempo compared to No Remorse. That section from No Remorse, :21 from Master of Puppets, and E1M1 are all very similar. Most people compare it to MoP because that's the more popular song. It sounds like a mashup of both songs to me because it is the same melody as from No Remorse but it is played on the same area of the neck as Master. Regardless it is cool as hell.
AuralOverdose 2 years ago
@AuralOverdose As I've said a hundred times, beats per minute has nothing to do with it.
Popularity of either song shouldn't have anything to do with it once you've been presented the facts.
sonicclang 2 years ago
i agree
doomdude873 2 years ago
good job clearing this up but it would have been nice if u took just a bit more time to show MoP
HerveGamerDude 2 years ago 2
amazing this is good
doomdude873 2 years ago
I agree with what u say, but it still also sounds like mop, sure it sounds like no remorse but also a lot like MoP

MagicMirror981 2 years ago
I really don't see how people can take this song as something from MOP... Not much of a fan eh! Still its really awsome, I can't believe Ive never noticed it before, I played Doom alot 10 years ago :-D

Funny as Hell :-D

I'm glad someone finally appreciated the subtle use of humor!! :)
sonicclang 2 years ago
the reason for everyone saying master of puppets is because its a more recent and more popular song than no remorse. well now we know, thanks sonicclang!
pc617 2 years ago
Actually, MoP isn't much more recent than No Remorse. Only by 3 years.

Close. My last name is Kline, very Irish (and probably German), and I'm from Wisconsin, which is next to Minnesota.
