  • Great job clearing this up. It's amazing just how many people get it wrong. I, too, am completely sick of the "Master of Puppets" references when they're simply wrong.

  • Check out the song 'This is Fate' by Aria. It's not so unsimilar to the E1M1 either.

  • People are now saying E1m1 is from Black Mayne, yet again remember how we said similar, Black Mayne copied it, and not just from Metallica, like 4 other Metal artists.

  • THIS GUY IS A RETARD. THE RIFF IS OBVIOUSLY FROM METALMILITIA. JUST LISTEN TO IT, FAGGOTS!

  • @dujl huh? This doesn't sound anything like Metal Militia. Are you deaf?

  • anyone that thinks MOP is right then there fucking retarded

  • Finally someone else who knows the actual song behind this classic doom theme I've had to do the same and play both like that to show people how they relate

  • @sonicclang perhaps I should have made myself more clear. Open E1M1 in a MIDI editor such as Anvil Studio, mute or delete all tracks except the drums and listen to it.

  • @SharkWADs No, absolutely not. The drums are absolutely nothing alike. Worst. Argument. Ever.

  • Wow people think it's master of puppets that's sad. It's kind of obverious it's No Remorse.

  • @kingplutoxiao1 Yeah dude, obverious. Kind of like furious, but more like obvious. I like it, obverious.

  • Dooms music was made to tribute popular rock and metal bands during it's era.

  • @kingplutoxiao1 Have you read "Masters of Doom"? It's THE definitive source for the story of Doom.

  • @sonicclang Interesting. I might pick it up.

  • I always thought that E1M1 was No Remorse, but I recently broke it up into a MIDI editor and realised that the drum track is somewhat similar to MOP's. I still think that it's no remorse, but now I have some doubts.

  • @SharkWADs How would opening the midi make you think it SOUNDS more like Master of Puppets? That doesn't make any sense. A song either sounds like another one or not. Looking at the sheet music has nothing to do with it.

  • @sonicclang "realised that the DRUM TRACK is similar to MOP". "Drum track" = MOP.

  • @couvepodre umm... no. worst argument I've ever heard.

  • Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Doom & Metallica, and E1M1 sounds NOTHING like MOP.

  • @ThrashFuckinMetal Sorry it took me so long to reply. It's Sonar from Cakewalk.

  • i love you 0.0

  • dude !

you heard Duke Nukem 64 theme?

    That too reminds No Remorse!

  • "Это Рок" listen to that!!!!! Its from a russian Band called Aria, that song apperad 1985 i guess. That sounds more like the Doom theme, than No remorse! I found that info at an another Doom Vid. Search it here at Youtube i think it was the first vid. ;)

  • 18 people still think its Mastah O' Puppets

  • Fuck yea.. Master of puppets ;D

  • Just give the no remorse longer note :D AND I LOVE MTALLICA!

  • I was wondering if you accept requests. I've been dying to figure out what song from the level Metal( map 8 Final doom TNT Evilution) actually is, or if it's a track all on it's own. Also just wanted to let you know, that I thought this was MOP for a very long time. It wasn't until watching this video did I learn the truth lol!

  • THANKS A LOT for getting this question cleared.

Please, do one like this for Doom2 MAP01. It makes me go crazy how so many people come and tell me that it has nothing to do with Hangar 18.

In time, props for some quite amazing guitar performance.

  • Sweet video! This kinda reminds me of Master of Puppets! Good job!

  • I've always thought E1M1 sounds like Painkiller

  • in the song Master Of Puppets 04-05 in intro it is 2x notch and it sounds like

No Remorse and E1M1 but E1M1 is defenetly more on base of No Remorse.

I think thats the notch that makes pople remind it of Master of Pupets cuz they play it more times in song than in No Remorse...

But yeah its more on base of No Remorse.

  • Obviously, any decent musician like me and you can tell that this IS a No Remorse reference, and not a Master of Puppets one.

  • thanks for clearing it up!

  • i like metallica

  • its based on no remorse

  • Metallica and D00/\/\,best combination.

  • i think Slayer - behind the crooked cross is more similar to E1M1 than "no remorse" by metallica

  • @Jerzu274 Yup, watch the video again and turn on annotations, you'll see that I also say that Behind the Crooked Cross sounds like this.

  • Hummm... I'm still not enterely...... lol just kidding you pretty much nailed it =] It's No Remorse. Even my deaf grandpa can agree with that.

  • You should have done a comparison to Master of Puppets as well just to prove the point of how different it is.

  • Good fucking god, I can't believe you care this much about such a petty issue.

  • @DeathBivouac I don't, hence why I'm literally 6 months behind on approving comments for this video.

  • finally! Sonic Clang needs a medal for actually being the (seemingly) few who know that the E1M1 Hangar Theme IS NOT Master of Puppets! It says that it's No Remorse on so many doom sites, that why would someone (unless you never checked the sites or heard of No Remorse) think it was Master of Pupets?

  • lol I bet you really got sick of those MOP comments. It reminds me of both songs but it does remind me more of "No Remorse"

  • That's awesome dude. Thanks for this. I love Doom and i'm always telling people how the music is inspired by great bands. You know, e1m1 DOES have a flavor of Master of Puppets. It's only because the tuning is so similar and the way it's played. The difference, besides the fact that it's OBVIOUSLY no remorse, is just the pacing. But to someone that isn't totally into Metallica, that's the most recognised tune, and they all have that Metallica flavor. Simple mix up i'd say. Good clarification.

  • @SteelSkin667 Turn on annotations and watch it again.

  • cool it sounds like master of puppets.... nah im just fuckin wit ya

  • I guess you only approve comments that praise or agree with you.

  • @jpmurphree No, I only approve comments when I have time, and I haven't had any lately.

  • Not to be a nerd here but id said they based the song on no remorse you can also hear so south of heaven by slayer too

  • SONIC CLANG RULEZ!!!!FTW

  • Btw, I just listened to Behind The Cooked Cross, and there's about a 10 second section that sounds similar (about 0:22 - 0:32), but I never would have noticed without looking for it. (Yes, I know it's E3M3).

  • @Riflemanm16a2 Yup, turn on annotations and watch again.

  • You thoroughly made your point, but, since I thought E1M1 and MoP were the same song from ages 5 to 14, I'll probably still think of it as MoP; even though, I figured out, after playing DOOM for myself several years ago, that they weren't the same.

P.S. You should have played some of MoP side by side to prove your point further.

  • @Riflemanm16a2 Yeah, I should have played MoP on the guitar too. I just ran out of time making the video.

  • it piss's me off when jak offs, who say there huge matellica fans, try convence me that this tune is master of puppets.so glad i found this vid coz i can prove there not matellica fans.cheers sonicclang.

  • Oh yeah that's definitaly no remorse you can tell right away I think people tend to think its like master of puppets because of the second riff after the intro its sort of but not really parts of master of puppets kind of sound like it but isn't

  • Sounds like master of puppets..lol.

  • How anyone thinks its MOP inspired must not actually play a guitar outside of a plastic one that plugs into a games console.

there are no more than 4 or 5 notes difference between each part of the harmonies and the actual line from no remorse, which is exactly enough to avoid copyright infringement.

do people actually use their ears these days or what?

  • the songs were both done by metallica and bands useally have simular songs

  • @cormacsreviews I 100% agree. That's why people without a refine ear think it sounds like MoP.

  • @sonicclang do you think eye of the storm by bullet for my valentine sounds familiar to e1m1? I just heard the song and it seems like a total rip off

  • @Anttizii Not really. Just because a guitarist bounces between the E and A string that doesn't mean it sounds like E1M1. That's a really common style of song writing.

  • @Anttizii I think that's just another example that shows how common this style riff is in metal music.

  • At first I thought metallica wrote that song becaus of doom. But then I realized that doom was released nearly 10 years after the song was

  • @sonicclang it's kind of annoying how you chastise people for not seeing the subtle differences in the songs. They're different, yes, but not everyone can tell. When I played doom to my friend on guitar he said master if puppets straight away. It's just what people think of.

  • @MetalSwitch95 Your friend is wrong :)

  • @sonicclang Lol. But seriously, even my hardcore Metallica fan friend said master of puppets. It's just a more famous riff than no remorse. Thats why there's confusion.

  • @MetalSwitch95 I absolutely do NOT buy the argument that MoP is "more famous". Any true Metallica fan knows all their stuff.

  • i cant believe people argue about this

  • @dillyflap This is why I stopped allowing comments without my approval. I got really sick of the arguing.

  • So because the HARMONY of E1M1 sounds like No Remorse, that means the song sounds like No Remorse? Wonder if anybody clued you in that the melody is the most prominent part of any piece, and the melody is more similar to Master of Puppets than No Remorse. But whatever. Just making sense here.

  • @Claude1313 Wow, you must be some big shot music instructor at a college or something.

The harmony in E1M1 sounds absolutely nothing like Master of Puppets.

  • @sonicclang No, it sounds "a little" like a small part of the intro to Master of Puppets. Which is better than it sounding "absolutely nothing" like No Remorse. You take this debate too seriously, as evidenced by the extremely pretentious nature of this video, and it blinds you from an objective, unbiased observation.

  • @Claude1313 Nah, I'm always pretentious, not just because I'm right and you're wrong :)

  • @sonicclang this actually sounds a lot like behind the crooked cross by slayer

  • @plurple73 Amazing how many people turn off annotations.

  • @Claude1313 the HARMONY is the second part of the MELODY in E1M1, and even the main melody is more similar to No Remorse, not to Master of Puppets.

  • @misfitDoctor

Man you really suck at doom e1m1 is NO REMORSE!!!!

Jeez i feel for sonicclang ppl not understanding the sound of the song is similar in no remorse and e1m1.

I grew up with doom and know everything about id softwares twist behind the making of this amazing shooter game.

  • wow i never really heard "No Remorse" (don't kill me) but i was always thought it sounded like "Master Of Puppets"... until now....

  • metallica and doom

    megadeth and duke nukem

amazing two of the greatest bands and two of the greatest games!!!

  • I think in the end we can all agree on that both songs kick ass and doom fuckin rules.

  • you know, i ACTUALLY thought the SAME thing, i was making a list of songs that are similar to video game soundtrack, one of them was no remorse and doom.

  • You know, no remorse reminds me of e1m1 which reminds me of master of puppets... Lol I'm such a fag

  • Im officially in love with your badassness

  • @AdmiralSlappy Thanks... I think.

  • @sonicclang in a totally non gay way....

  • No guys, it sounds like "Afternoon Delight"

  • @Presidentjh Now that's some funny stuff right there :)

  • Awesome proof you did there I like it =).years later after doom 1 came out there's one song that I thought was part of a doom (soundtrack) it kind of sound almost the same but I'll leave it to you the song is called (vortex) by (MegaDeth) Thank you = )

  • you are right but the only reason i think master of puppets pop into people's head is cuz its a more well known song and it sounds kind of similar but no remorse is so much closer sounding... anyways

    METALLICA ROCKS... my favorite band

  • Still Metallica...

  • Wow, you're all wrong. E1M1 is most inspired by "Behind the Crooked Cross" by Slayer. But you clearly are obsessed with being right about it being No Remorse. You seem like a dick.

  • @MisfitDoctor Yeah, I'm kind of a dick, but you're also kind of an idiot. Turn on annotations and watch the video again.

  • Sounds more like the intro to 'D.R.I. - Hooked' to me. Or the Riffs in the verses of 'Slayer - Behind the Crooked Cross'. But I think that rhythm pattern is popular and used a lot in metal.

  • The only reason I thought it was Master of Puppets is b/c I'd never heard No Remorse before, but once I listened I caught on right away. You are right, it's (obviously) no remorse.

  • Definitely "No Remorse" and great guitar playing btw.

  • I thought it sounded a lot like MoP too, but you are right, it's definetly got more No Remorse 'inspiration'. Now I know.

Thank for clearing that up Clang. Love your Classic Doom album too by the way :D

  • what guitar is that

  • @SamEdsall89 PRS.

  • Back then when I first played Doom. I was so young that I didn't care for who made it and what inspired it, I just thought they sounded cool. Doom really shaped my tastes in music now.

  • e1m1 is better than no remorse, anyway

  • Looool. E1M1 sounds nothing like Master of Puppets.

Good job with the video, yo.

  • Wow thats awesome. Sounds like master of puppets! :P

  • @pepe6666 Funny guy :)

  • Awesome video, but playing DooM on Xbox LIVE Arcade I think E2M1, Deimos Anomaly is Master, I've not researched this but they sound VERY similar.

  • @Jordy216 You're right, and I don't know a single person who has ever disputed that song sounding like Master of Puppets. The funny thing is, if you actually figure the two songs out on the guitar, they're played absolutely nothing like one another. They're actually very different. But for whatever reason they sound similar, and MoP is the first song that pops in your head when you play that level.

  • @sonicclang Thanks for replying :) and yup it definitely sounds like that on the Xbox LIVE Arcade version, just listened to the 3DO version and it's totally different, same with E1M1.

Reading more, apparently E2M1 is Big Gun by AC-DC, but I just don't hear that myself :s thoughts?

  • @Jordy216 Deimos Anomaly is actually very similar to AC/DC's Big Gun, but if I remember both songs well they have similar chords.

  • Aria. (1985)

    youtube.com/watch?v=I0UmkdMHJEQ

  • @mohopl ehh... I'm not blown away by any similarities. It's just the same style, going between the E and A. It's a very common metal style song.

  • @sonicclang yeah, I know. Generally I could mention more song with similar style of e1m1. I was just curious what You say about. that.

  • @mohopl Yeah, I agree, there are a lot of songs with that style. That's why there are so many opinions on this subject.

  • Love your video......I like it when another musician sticks to his argument and backs it up with specific musical elements, and then plays it on the guitar.......great tone by the way! On a side note, I've been thinking of covering that E1M1 theme, but as it sounded on the 3D0. It's slower than the E1M1 theme played on all the other ports of Doom, but I think the slower tempo suits the song better, imho.

  • @wlmmn I don't believe I've heard that version, but I'd love to hear a cover either way.

  • uh, youtube fail. Look at the music used in your video. It says "Slayer - No Remorse"

  • @TheJoebama Well I didn't write that. I have no idea who put that on there. Youtube software must have put that on there, but it surely wasn't me. If anything it's a "Youtube software engineer fail".

  • You rock, man. Thanks for clearing this up. I was also getting tired of people mistaking it.

  • Not only does No Remorse sound closer to E1M1 but the song perfectly describes the game, Another Day Another Death, All Hells Breaking Loose, Bodies are Mounting. Doom guy doesn't care who he kills cuz he's badass. Master of Puppets is about drug addiction, not killing the minions of satan.

  • @mkfreak90 Amazing argument! I'm very surprised no one has ever brought that up.

  • @sonicclang Indeed.

  • i think no e1m1 is mostly like no remorse, i just barely hear anything similar from master of puppets..

  • I totally agree on this one, I've listened to the other songs that are supposedly similar to E1M1 but they're not nearly as close to it as no remorse.

  • Well actually i heard lot of video game song similar to E1M1. Did they ripoff it from Doom or just a coincedence. A good example are "MIghty Wind Fate Unlimited code" and "F-Zero X: EXpansion Kit "Big Foot" Music "

  • I have not heard of ''No remorse'' and i think actually that sounds more like it...

Because i have only heard Master of Puppets and doom and that was what i Thought was the only thing that could compare... but i proves wrong!

Thanks man, it really helpd my mind!

And now i'm going to listn on No Remorse !!!

    And BTW great video !!!!

  • wow the E1M1 sounds like Master Of Puppets!! Just kidding ;P In fact I always say to people that this ain't nothing like MoP, maybe just a tiny little bit.

  • Jesus God people master of puppets is completely different from No Remorse People Pay attention to the year of the albums from metallica and listen to the Lead Guitar of No Remorse and the Lead Guitar Part of E1M1 they Clearly sound the same ill even Post a video Link of My Buddy John Playin the Lead Guitar part Of No Remorse just to prove Sonics point

  • i think people think its master of puppets cause the doom thing is in the same key as masters, no remorse, was played higher. the doom thing they changed because they could not copy. i think thats just it right.

  • @judoman25 All three, E1M1, Master of Puppets, and No Remorse are in the key of E. Very bad argument.

  • hey sonicclang are you going to make other tracks to e2m1-e4m9 ?

  • @Psychicgothboy Nope, sorry.

  • I just realized why this provides so much confusion: in No Remorse, the guitar is way behind the voice in the mix, so some people might not hear the riff clearly, but in the intro of Master Of Puppets, it's right in your face, so obviously some people are going to hear the more OBVIOUS similarity, even though it's much LESSER.

    But yep... No Remorse definitely.

  • ok first of all lets get one thing clear- i agree with you that its more like no remorse.now- i hadent heard either metallica song until a few days ago, i heard master of puppets and though "where did i hear that before?" i did some searches and had a moment of nostalgia when i realized it was Doom. i looked around to see if i was right and found this video. after watching i agree with you but i can see how people think its master of puppets if they havent heard either in a while. I did.

  • you remind me of my friend who always wants to be right. if it reminds people of master of puppets, so fucking what, should it bother you? nah, go live your life.

  • I am living my life, thank you. I spent about 4 hours making this video a couple years ago. Trust me, the subject is not keeping me up at night.

  • "Does that sound FARMILIAR?"

  • Ah... I thought it was Master of Puppets' main riff.

You know, the riff in No Remorse's chorus is really hard to hear, or maybe it's just me.

But yep, it makes sense now.

  • i met some people sayn the Metallica was inspired by E1M1 not the other way. yes its funny and stupid. poor idiots...

  • @GfCommando Wow! Ok, now anyone saying that is a flat out moron. Doom was made way after either No Remorse or Master of Puppets.

  • @sonicclang Your amplifier, I must know it!

  • @BeyondInfinium I'm using a POD 2.0.

  • Sonic Clang, I salute you. I'm suprised that you STILL bother trying to explane bluntheads. I would have given up a long time ago :D

  • How about I say it's a Mix? Master of Remorse?

  • @spike007980 I like it :)

  • Master of Remorse he's reminding you of things!

  • makes sence to me

  • Cant we all agree that the rifts from master of puppets and no remorse sound alike?

Thats how metalica makes there songs anyway, change the rift up a lil and add in some bad ass solos.

  • @xscottx019 No, I won't agree to that. You fail.

  • lol it is no remorse i hate ppl who say it is MOP

  • E1M1 seems slightly up tempo compared to No Remorse. That section from No Remorse, :21 from Master of Puppets, and E1M1 are all very similar. Most people compare it to MoP because that's the more popular song. It sounds like a mashup of both songs to me because it is the same melody as from No Remorse but it is played on the same area of the neck as Master. Regardless it is cool as hell.

  • @AuralOverdose As I've said a hundred times, beats per minute has nothing to do with it.

Popularity of either song shouldn't have anything to do with it once you've been presented the facts.

  • i agree

  • good job clearing this up but it would have been nice if u took just a bit more time to show MoP

  • amazing this is good

  • I agree with what u say, but it still also sounds like mop, sure it sounds like no remorse but also a lot like MoP

  • cool sounds like master of puppets LOL i'm jocking

  • THANKS <3 i'm so tired of people saying its Master of puppets, finally someone who's paying attention to the good oll doom music (:

  • Not to make fun of you or anything, but you sound kinda like the dude who voices kermit the frog.

  • Haha. I sound like Jim Henson. Cool!

  • hey ur rite i neva herd No Remorse b4

i always thort it was kinda like Master of Puppets

    but its obviosly No Remorse

  • I really don't see how people can take this song as something from MOP... Not much of a fan eh! Still its really awsome, I can't believe Ive never noticed it before, I played Doom alot 10 years ago :-D

  • Funny as Hell :-D

  • I'm glad someone finally appreciated the subtle use of humor!! :)

  • the reason for everyone saying master of puppets is because its a more recent and more popular song than no remorse. well now we know, thanks sonicclang!

  • Actually, MoP isn't much more recent than No Remorse. Only by 3 years.

  • Music music music... It's a game and I want to own some noobs.

  • but Metallica PWNZ

  • well yes Ill bite I originally did think master of Puppets but, that is because I never actually heard No remorse XD. But, yeah correct it defenitely does relate quite well.

  • i was listening to dokken earlier .... i was listening to the song lightning strikes again and the intro somewhat sounded like e1m1

  • goodjob

  • yea whenever my teacher says the word "always" he pronounces it like "alwes"... sounds like a cross between an irishman and some white guy from minnesota

  • Close. My last name is Kline, very Irish (and probably German), and I'm from Wisconsin, which is next to Minnesota.
