  • Nice, next make steps:)

  • excellent concept but what about eviromental feedback. if i want to put leverage on the floor and not move forward. will it slip? range will need to be inrease if i want to do a cartwheel.it is a good starting point but i don't think it will be the end product.

  • The winner of the game "The Ground is Lava".

  • This has virtual reality (and therefore military training applications). With a VR helmet on, you need to be able to feel like you're walking in a direction when you're actually not. Unnecessary? Pointless? Please.

  • Good if your playing "don't touch the hot lava"... the game where the floor is the lava

  • Okay.

    Now do it with nanobots.

  • dude I FUCKING thought of this like a year ago lol you idea thief LOL

  • I think of magneto when he walks across them

  • that would be soo awesome if somehow those panels would levetate or propeled somehow over the ground, or water.

  • Its not unnecessary its like a treadmill. It just needs some more work. Also they learned alot about robotics making it.

  • nice for people who need exercise but are shut ins

  • you could easely fall

  • it may not work very well at this scale with this many pieces, but this idea shows great potential. with nanotechnology, or just many more floor tiles it could be one solution for virtual reality

  • hamster ball works a lot better

  • The point of this is for like a virtual game or something, so you dont need a large room to play it

  • They look like horseshoe crabs.

  • What is the point of this technology?

  • @surferpaul420 being able to walk freely in virtual reality.

  • It would be VERY helpful if they could hover, so, like, create instant steps in the air...

  • are we supposed to be able to walk on water or something? =P

  • oops I did step on shit

    (3 steps later)

    oh, not again

  • If u make a 3D glass which u can actually see the "way" that u r walking in, and thouse floor move faster it would be cool.....

i mean like u holding a wii(or some thing like that :P) and playing FPS on that thinging....... more realistic?

thing is the floor need to move faster so u can run on it!!!!!

than maybe it could use for military training or something like that!!!!

bur it will be useless if u can only walk so slow on that floor......

dont know if that counts as walking @w@!

  • @a162533092 It might be a proof of concept. I do wonder if it would become unsafe if the floors did move as fast as they had to.

  • VR gaming to the next level! Imagin playing games like call of duty! And you are the one running around in the game! Bloody awesome!! We can play video games and not get fat!! woot!!

  • The floor is lava.

  • OOOOOOOOR you could use a treadmill...

  • @Agindie30 try strafing on a treadmill :p

  • @Agindie30 The idea is to able to change direction

  • hmmm what if it ends up being programed to walk u off a cliff while u got the 3d glass on and earphones or something seriously why do humans tend to wana walk n one place this vid reminds me the Wright brothers flying and other old aircraft concept machines. @cbwan

  • @inr21sevier can't tell if you're a troll or not.

  • Stairs? solution? guys, its for video games and stuff. its no solution to anything. it says it allows its user to walk in a virtual reality while staying in the same spot.

  • this technology can be used to help; with simulations like for the army, and even be incorporated into massive gaming projects, like Actual Reality Games

  • Stupid ...

  • Yeah but I walk like I run

  • Haha, nice phat ass!

  • what happens when you go up or down stairs? does it have like extendo legs or something?...

  • @TwilightObbsessed100 on the fly stairs (appearing in an arbitrary direction) would be incredibly hard to emulate, with ANY existing or proposed omnidirectional treadmill technology.

You'd probably have to wait until we invented some sort of programmable matter, like claytronics.

    watch?v=XJEMfAg5l2w

  • who walks like that lol

and why the hell does the animation guy have to be naked ?

  • note that they dont go anywhere

the person stay in the same place walking...

  • What Idiot thought a test tone in the beginning was a great idea?

  • They made a alternative to this called the virtusphere this would be slow as hell...

  • or how about using this new invention called the "treadmill"! haha!

  • At this rate, we may never have to touch the hot-lava again

  • this sucks soooooo bad

  • This is a pretty impractical way of creating this type of "floor".

    Now check this out /watch?v=Af0Skxi4ftw

That is a MUCH better solution.

  • I would just want to ride one of these to work XD

  • What is the point of this?

  • wow nice idea

  • why does the 3d figure have a prominent buttocks?

  • you need more of them, need them to be at every possible position you could suddenly hop to, you could also try different shapes other than square

  • vr is stupid. you would go blind from goggles and the only solution for walking is a suspended sphere that you go in. there would be insaine amount of injuries so it wouldnt even go on the market, i doubt people would want a giant sphere in their house or even have room for it, and not to mention it would be really expensive.

  • Why would people go blind from this? We already sit in the dark and stare at our computer/TV/Cellphones. It's not like you wouldn't be able to control the intensity. I don't even know what to say to your injuries comment. Why would there by injuries? Because of people using something incorrectly? Seems to me that that occurs everyday. Finally, by the time it's mass produced and on the market to average people, the price will have dropped substantially.

  • Most of the time we look at screen that are two or more feet away from our eyes. Starring at anything up close for a long period of time will mess up your vision. So imagine wearing goggles that are only inches away from your eyes for even a few hours at a time. Hey I would love vr to work but it will take a while to work without hurting ourselves doing it.

  • Two or more feet away? Have you seen my brother text? It's like 1 foot away, at the most! Hahaha! I certainly do see your point about that though.

Maybe we can all just get some Matrix-esque things attached to our brains.

  • Hah yea that's the only good way.

  • I believe when the personal computer was pretty new someone (I think Bill Gates) questioned "Who would ever want a computer in their house?", well.. look where that got us now.

  • a treadmill-like device would work better - one that can rotate by sensors connected to your shoulders to detect when you turn

  • So... why wouldn't anyone just walk on the floor instead of those things? It doens't look very practical to me.

  • Because you can't walk on stationary floor with a Virtual Realety helmet on.

You would bump into things which you wouldn't see in VR.

  • The walking looks impracticable.

  • WHAT THE FUCK HAPPEND TO WALKING

  • This isn't like a futuristic treadmill this is a walking concept for Virtual Reality so you can walk in VR but you are stationary in real life.

  • ωραία και τι να το κάνω αυτο;

  • stick an upside down dustbin on it, add a plunger & egg-whisk sticking out

  • Think this technology could have VR applications, but omnidirectional treadmills are probably still a better solution to the problem of keeping users walking in a confined space.

  • Naice done!

Needs faster servo's and to make it useful do it with caissons.

    Self building dams and bridges.

  • 4 squares are okay,,,

try 9 squares are the best

  • Just give me a room with 4 walls and ceiling equipped with HoloVizio screens, and on the floor also a monitor but on a thread-mill, then two of those new playstation motion controller things and I won't bother you anymore. Playing KOTOR!

  • This seems an over-complicated solution IMO. Definitely interesting and innovative though. But not necessarily effective.

  • Over-complicated solution to a non-problem. Seriously people should just walk lol.

  • @cowedbywisdom:

It solves the problem of keeping the user in one place while they perform an action such as walking. This can be very useful in certain types of Virtual Reality simulation.

  • @Zekian i agree. the omnidirectional treadmill is better imo.

  • as a prototype, that's great. I can see how having a much larger swarm of much smaller pads could really do the trick.

  • This would prob be the most unecessary thing ever created by man

  • LMAO!!!!!1

  • You're Totaly Wrong.. Of course we don't absolutely need it... but you could say the same thing for film... or a video game or anything else

This invention would make revolution for video games.. you'll be able to move in space... and that in your living room... you'll be able to explore a City by walking... in you room... At first it'll surely be used for the army.. simulations and that things... and it's just a prototype... who knows what it will do!

  • Uh yeah... there are already far better methods of moving in virtual 3D space. This one looks like a joke.

  • This one STILL looks like a joke... it's the every first prototype...

I think that the idea is to have something to move in a 3D space but something you can have in your room... if you mean this enorm carpet.. that means that you'll need a whole room just for this... Wait a bit and maybe they'll develop rhis "circular floor" like in their 3D animation!

  • Unnecessary or useless? I can think of virtual reality, or green screen special effects work, or 360-degree treadmill for exercise at the gym, or for caged animals, physical therapy in hospitals. Motion platforms have all sorts of uses, you just have to use your imagination and knowledge of the world... if you have those...

  • @Lillie1986 That was my first reaction as well, but I think it could be useful in the water.

  • @manilaenglish It wouldnt work in water. 1. because you wouldnt be going anywhere and 2. you wouldnt be able to keep balance

  • @Lillie1986 You make a valid argument. It probably wouldn't work well for humans on foot. What about much larger platforms though? Something large enough for a car. Maybe with a radius of 10 times the width of a car. Then use it to drive across a large body of water where there aren't any bridges. It's a wild idea but I think it's worth investigating.

  • @manilaenglish For what? It doesnt get you anywhere as its not moving you forward, so whats the point in it?

  • @Lillie1986 Well, the car would just drive across the platform when they line up. This could be handy for the military if not for anything else. There must be situations when officers want to drive over rivers, lakes, straights, etc. when there aren't any bridges. Why do you think the vehicles wouldn't go anywhere?

  • @manilaenglish are we watching the same video here? Watch the video and then ask me again why they wouldnt be going anywhere

  • @Lillie1986 Ah, yea. That's right. My mind just started wondering when I saw that video. I completely forgot that the whole point of this video was to demonstrate a floor for a virtual reality environment. You're right. That's pretty useless.

Here's a better concept. Have you seen this?

    Treadmill for 3D Environment

    watch?v=Af0Skxi4ftw

    How It Works

    watch?v=d-8eVcN2z3k

And we could combine it with this

Touchable Holograms Using Ultrasonic Sound Waves

    watch?v=f2jzB-M5yTo

  • @Lillie1986 Then you haven't seen much of what man has created.

  • @Lillie1986 LOL agreed

  • @Lillie1986 What the fuck do you know about anything anyways? Are you seriously ripping on this project that students spent countless hours on? Could you do anything similar? Fuck you, sir. Fuck you.

  • @Lemur14 First of all Im not a sir, second of all, whats the point? Youre walking in the same place all the time :P

  • @Lillie1986 For VR.

  • i want that for computer games with 3D screen-googles :)

  • or i can get a treadmill..

  • wow.....

  • holodeck!!!!!

  • lound, clunky and slow. Search for the omni-directional treadmill if you wanna see something like this, but more impressive.

  • he could have goten his foot smashed.

  • oh yea thats not completely useless what if a snail was cruisin down at high speeds that shit is useful

  • lmfao, who walks that slow?

    XD

  • its like wii only more shit

  • looks like hes trying to learn numbers 1-4.

  • talk about stupid moronic inventions...how about doing some cancer research you wanna be scientists...stupid motherfuckers.

  • I think this could have many applications, and not just entertainment ones. Of course, I agree that cancer research is a little more pressing right now, but not all scientists and engineers are in medicine or biology, now are they? I could say the same thing about you right now, or even me! "What a stupid moronic reply.. how about doing a journal article you wanna be critic.."

  • journal articles don't save lifes, but my critic presses people twards cancer research or whatever, even if it makes some rich guys aware it's worth the critic.

  • Hm... almost got it. Team up with Wii and you'll really be on a roll.

  • Who the FUCK walks that slow?

  • true

  • that guy.

  • noisy... but a good base for the concept

  • too many parts...= too many problems

  • Wow...know how long it would take me to watch to the kitchen at this pace?!"

  • Oh yeah, and the guy in that animation walks like he has to take a crap...

  • sad thing about this concept is that it cant take changes in your movement.if you will walk into a town (ingame) ,then slowly going, looking around, then monsters will run at you,you will start running...you will jump over the floor(in real)

  • Its an interesting concept, but the "floors" are not fast enough to keep up with anything more than a very slow casual stroll. They are also quite noisy. I think the omni-treadmill is the way to go, but if the above problems can be fixed this is the portable, compact version of a virtual reality floor. The other is too big to be used by anyone other than rich people and game hubs (if used for gaming...).

  • naah...I liked the treadmill better...

  • useless garbage

  • ROFL dude , people would be busting they're asses constantly if these were mas marketed with a popular game.

  • Ok...it looks like they are walking on modified and programmed Vroomba's. Do the they vacuum the floor when you aren't walking on them? Check out the cyberspace omni-directional treadmill. It's near perfection for this technology.

  • slow and not very omni-directional

  • whats the point...if there is a need to get across something that doesn't have a floor and you fall off these things, lawsuit waiting to happen.

  • pretty cool, once they get it developed so that you can use it walking at normal speed, it'd be fun. But then they could modify it to be like a hover craft sort of thing, it could go on water, and you could have your 4 bits of floor and walk across a lake! :)

  • niiiiceee ass

  • IMO*

  • ya that last part was just in your dreams. use some quiter motors imp

  • still in its infancy

  • well if they could develope a program fast enough to be able to move those like shown in the 3d diagrams it would probably work. Althought, they would have to be alot quieter.

  • its not a matter of programing but of the speed of the tiles, and their mechanisms.

  • What a waste of time! There are so many better ways to do this! I just hope the guy got some benefit from developing it ($, a good grade, satisfaction?)

  • Looks cool, but impractical. I can't see much out of this besides some arcadey style VR games (no reality VR), not to mention I hate how fast the 3D model shows him moving, then the IRL guy is just baby stepping.

  • little slow

  • stand on it and get it to take you around the house!

  • Yes, but can it vacuum the floor too? I think not! :)

  • wow loud arent they

  • its meant for virtual reality. If the person puts on an eyepiece that shows a 3d world, then they can walk around free inside it using this. Of cource it needs work though

  • LOL Fail!

  • This is good. The possibilities opened up are amazing.

  • not trying to be rude, but what posibilities? what could be potential use for this?

  • Well, virtual reality, obviously.

  • Cool idea.

  • RUNN!!1

  • the virtual version is much smoother.

  • lmao y dont he just beef up those vacume cleaners that the run on the floor without human control maybe rewire it lmao he could walk on it and have a clean floor

  • Does the fact it needs a real floor to run on not bother anybody?

  • I dont see the point in this?

    It doesnt keep you stationary...

    The floor is faster.

  • why?

  • lollll

  • needs a big i mean big speed inprovment

  • the animation human has a big butt....

    just throwing it out there..

  • thats cool if i wanna walk 2 inches per hour in a video game =/ i hope they speed it up! =D

  • i hope they get it to move faster... and less noisily

  • i just can't wait 2 c this malfunction then oops split!!!

  • I saw the demo at NextFest a few years ago. It will be awesome for playing virtual Frogger when I'm 90.

  • cant wait till virtual games are made they would be so fun

but probably give us some crazy brain cancer

  • all you have to do is walk slow like you just had hemorrhoid surgery.

  • Yeah exactly... It is still in contact with the floor and there for you are still moving while waking.

Now this Omni directional treadmill thing... I can see that in use in the movies. Green screen and the like...

  • if only it moved fastaa

  • and if it would run on carpet.

  • wow, that really synced well with the music i'm playing now. it's great video, but what's the application?

  • hwat's the ponit of that?

  • imagine wearing VR goggles and walking in an environment (without worrying about running into something?)

it's emerging, so it would need more work (i'd think the tiles should be faster and/or larger to be viable for real walking) but it's quite clever methinks.
