i played this on my tuba, kinda hard to get up to the gflat about the staff (bass clef).. sounds good. i don't play bass but it's sounds good to me. and that's all that matters.
COOL!!!!!!!! I am in 8th grade and since im the best at my school my teacher is making me play this for Solo Ensemble if anyone has any pointers to help me email me at sabrinamannix@yahoo.com
I did this piece for my Grade V Royal SChools exam in 1973. I was terrified with nerves, and my tail pin was not securely in place. and when it came for the slide to the D flat just before the end of the piece (you know the one), the pin collapsed, the bass dropped a full six inches or more, and the performance stopped with a sudden thud.
that is my memory of Saint Saens "The Elephant.
and yes, intonation is tricky for the transition into E Major . . . . . . . . . .
hey.. i like this piece a lot and i am working on it for an audition. your pitch was a little off in some areas. also try moving your bow toward the bridge more when your playing, it will help the sound. keep working on it!
i recently got the sheet music for this piece and am loving it. i found that massive amounts of staccato and a very rosined bow works best (dont listen to "the bassist"...german bow works perfectly for this piece~i never use french bow-not enough power!) but keep at it. its a fun piece
NO! the german bow is much more functional than the french bow! the overhand style may work fine for chin strings and cellos, but not for the massive strings on the double bass!
Haha, if that were true then how do you explain the success of all the great french bow players? Francois Rabbath, Ed Barker, Hal Robinson, Thierry Barbe etc. Also, you can get the same dynamic volume out of either bow if you know how to play them. It was a joke anyway, there are virtuosos on both so it's not like one is really "better" than the other.
I hope you're able to recognize humor when you see it again.
Probably a bit too ambitious at this stage, but it's a good piece for double bass and is worth working at. I might upload one of me playing it for you guys to critique
oh and i forgot to say something =) try to be more aggressive with your bow, I mean you have to put the right stress on some notes. All in one it is a good performance
at first i want to say that this girl has the bravery to play infront of people, and that is a good thing. but there are a few mistakes, with the intonation, with your bow, they way you play the notes etc. BUT if you work on it, everyday 20 minutes it will be better in a few weeks, because you have the potential to play this thing! And another thing is really important, you have to play louder, so loud that everyone hears you in the room.
Yea i love this song, had to play it in high school that E is a b#@# haha but i never learned the bowing for it. good job though who ever performed this did better than me. I could barely do a D scale in 8th grade (bass= slacker) haha.. though in high school won best bass section of the state and went to state chapionships. Stick with it, i like your style.
Seriously, sure I'm much younger (now a sophomore), but I really have to sit here and say that it's the most ridiculous thing to just insult someone who HAD to play that for the fuckin french recital.
Stop being imature and grow the fuck up. It's pathetic that you have enough time, and are so obnoxious, that you spend time telling people they suck at something they're working hard at.
the rest of yall, with the nice comments.. thank youuuuu
Well, you have a very valid point. I'll bet that most of those critics can't play bass or anything else very well, but they feel they have the right to criticize other people who try hard. But it would be a more convincing argument, jackisagiantgorilla, if you didn't have to use the vulgar language.
yeah the only thing i don't like about vance books (what i am assuming you got this from) is that it gives pianos alot of emphasis the way he arranges it
I understand that this is a hard piece, but carry on practising and you could be amazing at it! I know how hard it is to get the notes in tune, as I play the cello, so I understand about the performance. And ignore the people who have put down mean comment. Keep practising! Good Luck.
You shouldn't bow so close to the fingerboard, because your bass wont project as well. Changing that could help your intonation issues as well - because its hard to tune when the notes aren't full and clear.
you're often out of tune... very much of the time... okay, most of the time but good job anyway. i can suck at playing alone in front of people too... just not used to it as a bassist...
well you better get fucking used to it. i'm sure you suck balls. you go to your grandaddy and suck his titties. in addition to sucking at bass. and at life. so go shit on yourself because that's the only thing that you would be good at.
Wow. I can't believe how hateful the comment was below me! The bass is a difficult instrument to play. No one is born with an instrument in their hand. This woman is on the right track to becoming a great musician. Keep it up :D

I know what your problem is, you play German bow. Put down that archaic pos and start playing the almighty french bow!

very true...its nothing but an ongoing battle between french and german bow styles-neither are right or wrong; its just a matter of preference
but here's an interesting topic: Francois Rabbath vs. Garry Karr

oh, I must say that was terrible. I'm a bassist myself. You must learn the easy stuff before you start playing songs like that, way to hard for you.

being a fellow bassist, i have to say not bad for the 8th grade. keep up the practice, your nearly there. just watch your tuning
as i said, i am a bassist so i know how difficult tuning can be
the pianist was a little too enthusiastic i would say...as she never took into account the volume to allow the bass to be heard clearly
good start though
chickabo 3 years ago 2
She's in freaking 8th grade, give her a break. For her level, it's not terrible.
(You are a bit flat though, dear.)

I almost can't hear the double bass. The piano is too loud. Try it next time with the mute pedal.

First of all, the pianist played too loud. I think the Bass player got nervous. I could have been better. Way to keep at it!
