Take Canada for example, yes, they have a very good welfare system, free schooling, free healthcare, etc(this is from memory so it may not be all correct, but that's the gist of it.) So as you can see, every country has its "problems". Sure the PAP can do more for the disadvantaged, but there isn't a perfect government in the world.
35% tax is only for highest income bracket. But in sg, everybody pays 40+% disguised tax in the form of inflated HDB price, withheld CPF at low interest rates etc. PAP has gotten enough money from your family to afford to give you back some welfare and free schoolilng! The most practical way - a mega-scale, once-and-for-all soln - to help the poor, sick and elderly is to implement *some* welfare (and it will not bankrupt sg). Since many years ago (199x!), Singaporeans are committing suicide at 1 per day! Elderly Singaporeans at 1 per week! The stats are open, but the news media do not report on them, and so unless you read international news agencies, you don't get the news.

wendyneo, you cannot compare the countries based on "welfare policies" alone. Take Canada for example, yes, they have a very good welfare system, free schooling, free healthcare, etc(this is from memory so it may not be all correct, but that's the gist of it.) However, their tax compared to Singapore is outrageous (35% or so, again from memory)
So as you can see, every country has its "problems". Sure the PAP can do more for the disadvantaged, but there isn't a perfect government in the world.

But in sg, everybody pays 40+% disguised tax in the form of inflated HDB price, withheld CPF at low interest rates etc. PAP has gotten enough money from your family to afford to give you back some welfare and free schoolilng! no, maverick020, having *some* welfare will not bankrupt the country. eg 1. pap spend 4% of gdp on healthcare. Developed countries spend 10+%. This means of the *same* $100 pap collects, it can spend $10 instead of $4, without needing to increase tax. Just give less to the reserves, gic, temasek which r losing our money! Eg 2. the millions spent on foreign athletics could be used to enable those on welfare to get 3 meals, instead of the current 2!

The most practical way - a mega-scale, once-and-for-all soln - to help the poor, sick and elderly is to implement *some* welfare (and it will not bankrupt sg). This means kicking out PAP which advocates ZERO-WELFARE. To do that, elections need to be won. In turn, free media, fair election, democracy r needed. first. Hence i c SDP working towards that. (I not related to it).

But i think just for sake of "fame" and "renown" to "rent" talents is not right. Why don't they spent the millions on local children whose parent are willing to train them for olympics? I mean this can really help them to devote their children to lifetime training. And they can engage oversea coach if they want?

But if really nobody suitable, then just don't take part at most. Y must have a last minute rental from china. This make some of us feel sad and bad also, not proud. Nothing to do with graciousness.

Singaporeans at birth or not, it doesn't matter. The important thing is that the team got the whole nation rallying together for a common goal. I'm not entirely supporting the foreign talent scheme but I can appreciate what the government is trying to achieve here. Afterall, the girls did their best for this country, I do not see why they would deserve your nasty comments.

You stop trying to give excuse for pap - a govt that refuses to take care of the poor, sick, or elderly singaporeans but which pour money to buy foreign athletics is not a good govt. The gals were not wrong because they came here for a career. Just that some of us cannot understand why the need for all these shows...anyone understand..if Singapore really is attractive, people will swim here themselves, don't need to put on all these front.

consider this thought, if u are good in sports and in academic, which would you prefer to choose to further in? it is of course in academic, because in Singapore 'paper' is very important so one one wants to consentrate on sports hence there is a need to import talent from other countries. Hopefully Singapore Sports School will help to promote more native Singaporeans into Sports. lets see at YOG 2010.

it is important to note that I did not talk abt import of foreign athletics in isolation. I was talking abt allocating money to such import/training, when money should be spent on Singaporeans eg. the poor, elderly, sick etc. Click on "more info" at top right.
That is, if money is unlimited, sure, they can import foreign athletics all they want. Lots of countries do that *after* they have taken care of their citizens. Not so for pap.

Lots of diff. When our ancestors came from China, the local government did not lavish tax money on our ancestors to train them to play table tennis, WHILE neglecting the welfare of poor, sick, elderly locals who had been paying tax.

there is only failure, when the poor, sick and elderly are left to fend for themselves on the streets, collecting empty cans and cardboards, WHILE millions are poured into importing and training foreign sports players.
But you have no empathy for your fellow Singaporeans. Shame on you! Are you jealous of our nation builders' "enviable" back-breaking "employment" at the ripe old age of 80 years old? Don't worry, you will get your chance when you turn 80.

Very true, wendyneo. I don't know how the other native born Singaporean are feeling about the Olympic candidates on behalf of Singaporean but I do know that I feel malu that Singapore has to come to this extend despite having our 'integrity' as 'first class'.
This shows that 'honor' can be bought.
