  • I wish the smell only lasted for hours... My hands have smelled like garlic for at least 3 days hahah im not kiddin. Ill try this and see how it goes

  • You need to wash with toothpaste to remove even the worst odors.

  • I love your videos Jason, I'm so glad I stumbled back onto them again.

Your tip about rubbing your fingers against steel is a good one. The organosulfur compounds in garlic that give it the distinct smell and taste that we all know and love (except for the smelling part) slowly break down in air. The iron in steel serves as a catalyst to speed up this process and causes the chemicals to decompose faster. Hydrogen Peroxide also works well (skunk spray is similar, and H2O2 also works there).

  • @Saucychemist

    Thanks for sharing this!

  • thanks jason :)

  • Thanks for this very much, BTW does the stainless steel do the same for onion smell

  • @veilsidenissan350z Yes it does, though you can also wash your hands with a solution of hydrogen peroxide and a little detergent for approx. 1 minute for similar results.

  • wow i never know this thanks man.. i was like woaaaa

  • @arimn5583 Cool, huh?

  • that is so cooooooooooool

    I LOVE you:)

  • in my country, we can buy a stainless steel soap shaped bar to wash our hands with to remove garlic and chilli. Maybe you can find one in America?

  • thanks so much!!!! would have never thought of it!

  • @kirathedeath

    You're welcome! Thanks for commenting!

  • Oh, but I love the smell of garlic!

I also love pickles. And completely capable (and willing) to drink vinegar.

    I <3 raw onions too.

    Muahahaha

  • This would probably work with non-laminated wood too, not just steel. Of course, you're quite likely to get splinters using wood.

  • I knew the stainless steel trick, but honestly never even thought of using my sink haha. Thanks!

  • @Grazfather You're welcome!

  • awesome

  • Best tip EVER!

  • you learn something new everyday. Its really cool to know that part of the world. Garlic is the most potent. You can get the smell on your clothes and its hard to get it off. Great video.

  • @uhavemooface

    Thanks for the comment!

  • But naow my sink stinks :(

  • @Bimm3rcc

    Ha ha!!! =]

  • I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned already but this also works with onions which was a life saver. A single hand peeled onion = a day and a half of rank fingers. Blech.

  • Cool Thanks for the tip. I'll try it next time I cook with garlic.

  • thats so cool!!!!!! will try it out!!! :D

  • oh my this is magic!!!

  • woah so cool ^ ^

  • Love the part of trying to sleep. hahahaha. So true.

  • @vanscoyoc

Thanks for noticing that and commenting! Haahaa!

  • great tip, i like it! thanks chef <3

  • @rosenpurple Thank you!

  • You're such a genius chef! No need for me to head out and purchase a stainless steel bar soap! Thanks for the great tip!

  • @MsBlackOrchid You're welcome! Glad it helped!

  • wow! what the heck........science-y much? =D i love garlic but hate that after smell. Thank you! :)

  • @joyjoyooO You're welcome!

  • my parents do that! I DOES work!! ;o)

  • cool. Great vids by the way.

  • Hey, I just made a maranara sauce with lots of garlic and onions. I just wet my hands and rubbed my hands around the s/s sink and it really works!! Odor was gone in seconds.

  • i suppose you can use a stainless steel bowl if you dont have the sink.

    Good Idea Chef hill :)

  • If you put the knife, under the water and you wash your hands with the water that pass through the knife, it's the same thing!

  • Wow, good idea. I'll try it!

  • And it keeps the Vampires away too!!!

  • Thats a fantastic tip. However there's no puree here but a ton of particles to cook via pressure, microwave, steamer or boiling, with enough liquid Garlic flavouring + a minimarket worth of spices for the attraction of fish. My wife will still walk faster than a good lady visiting Gambia at Badala Park (lovely btw) or the garlic breadpaste that can take itself fishing!

Use a 'retained heat green pail cooker' instead?

  • So simple... And it works!

  • nice idea .. but i wash my hands with detol .. and it remove it

  • y'know garlic is so good, it's prolly doing your hands a favour!

  • does this method also work with onion?

  • You know, I actually LIKE the smell of garlic... lol.

  • @therazorsedge28

Oh, I do to. Just not on my fingers... lol.

  • Frankly, Jason, I love the smell and taste of garlic and onions. Most folks don`t, especially in the breath. Maybe if you put a stainless steel spoon in your mouth after eating it... neat experiment for you to try.

  • im a freak who loves the smell of garlic

  • @sqwishdabug.- So do I

  • Super tip...thanks Chef!

  • I love the smell of garlic on my fingers, but my girlfriend doesn't....

  • hmm, i'll have to try that next time im in that situation.

  • i wonder if this works with capiscum (chili peppers). it would help those of us who wear contact lenses -- the oil can stay in your fingers for hours and when you take out your lenses at bedtime -- eek!

  • Chef Jason, please do you have a different tip for onions, or will this one work just fine?

  • yeah..wat about d breath!! lol

  • You are one sick chef. In a good way!

  • wow if that works..I owe you one! Being Indian, I use garlic in my everyday cooking and boy do I hate smelling it later! I spray a little oil on my fingers before I chop, helps a bit.. =)

  • I like the garlic smell... =\

  • Thank you chef!! I LOVE YOUR SHOWS!!!

  • Have any tips for getting hot peppers off your fingers? :P

  • @Eelyen the only way that happens..is when you get it into your eyes =D

  • @Eelyen The only way that happens is when you get it into your eyes =D

  • thanx for tip Chef

  • this is totally true. i saw these stainless steel balls (go ahead make ball jokes!) on sale at a bed bath and beyond and they are supposed to remove onion or garlic smell.

  • Thanks! It really sucks when ya have that odor on ye hands : S

  • Don't have a stainless steal sink, I have a marble/granite sink, do you have any other tips to how to remove garlic odor from your hands or was that the only tip you have? :o)

  • @5gorgeous You can also use a stainless steel mixing bowl.

  • @ChefTips Don't have those either, I use only glas bowls. Any other suggestions not involving stainless steel?

  • cool stuff thanks chef

  • Interesting trick. I use a lot of garlic in my cooking so it's handy to know.

  • i actually got garlic and rubbed my fingers with it to try this method. works!

  • O HAI!

  • Jason, why did you show this today :( I was making dinner yesterday with garlic and onion :D! I made Pasta with Chicken and Tomato Sauce :D!

    Thanks for the tip.

    From Alexander. Denmark :)!

  • cool..but garlic smells good anyway

  • @ssramroop not when it's on your hands

  • Life saver Chef... Life saver...

  • Really works! Thanks!!!!

  • Jason, the trick I learned for this is to rub your fingers (carefully, please) against the stainless steel knife you used to chop or peel the garlic with while under the running water from your sink before using detergent on the knife. You both clean the knife and get the smell off your fingers all in one step. Please comment. Best wishes.

  • @pedroeph Sounds like that should work as well! The trick is the stainless steel. Just don't cut yourself!

  • 0:16 Haha, the bed shot cracked me up :D

  • garlic smellz good

  • 0:05

Surprised you there! The camera person is a sneaky one.

  • nice thanks

  • Jason! This totally makes sense now! At Crate & Barrel they sell stainless steal bars in the shape of a soap bar. It confused the heck out of me, but it just all clicked now! hahaha! Thanks!

  • @silvernitrate10 Interesting! Haven't seen those yet.

  • can you get rid of garlic breath by LICKING a stainless steal sink?! hahahaha

  • @moonbeams90 lol ;-)

  • You are the best Jason!!

Thumbs up and some money love my friend!!

  • I Don't get why everyone dislikes the smell of garlic, its lovely lol

  • Ahh yes I learned this trick a few years ago and love it =D

I really don't mind the garlic smell though, so sometimes I don't even do it ;0

  • thankfully my fingertips are actually made of stainless steel so I never have this problem.

  • I've never heard that before. Will try it next time. Thanks for the tip...

  • nice

  • niiccceeee!!

  • Personally, I don't mind the smell of garlic. However, I do not enjoy garlic breath.

  • Now all we need is a cure for garlic breath...

  • wow that was cool...... dont have a stainless steel sink though....... will a stainless steel faucet work?? lol

  • @bluejuiseritsma It should work. Let me know!

  • @bluejuiseritsma yeah but someone might ask what the heck you're doing with the faucet. XD

  • @car852 XD but the faucet would be happy, wouldn't it be? lmao!!!!!

  • i don't have stainless steel either :/ guess i'll stick to lemons

  • I had no idea this worked lol awesome video Jason

  • lol@oh hi such the acting skills u have lol

  • I have this little round stainless steel thing, that is just for that. I was shocked at how well it worked. It's strange but yes stainless steel does remove that odor very well.

  • It's because that the stainless steel isn't an completely stable ion, so basically what happens I think, is that the elements composed to make the steel need some electrons or protons.. and Sulfur tends to seep into the metals to become stable the bad part about this is that the steel can go bad faster with impurities in it. (Same goes for poly unsaturated oils, they go bad 100x faster then butter hyrdogenated oils.. but usually its iron oxide that invades because people fry in caste iron)..

  • @Shadow194 Thanks for explaining the chemistry behind this!

  • damn it I don't have a stainless steel sink. could I use a spoon?

  • @Sror3d yes, i tried, and it worked.

  • @kyh7501 Cool thanks! I had no idea

  • cool!

  • That's an awesome tip!! Thank you!!
