I love your videos Jason, I'm so glad I stumbled back onto them again.
Your tip about rubbing your fingers against steel is a good one. The organosulfur compounds in garlic that give it the distinct smell and taste that we all know and love (except for the smelling part) slowly break down in air. The iron in steel serves as a catalyst to speed up this process and causes the chemicals to decompose faster. Hydrogen Peroxide also works well (skunk spray is similar, and H2O2 also works there).
@veilsidenissan350z Yes it does, though you can also wash your hands with a solution of hydrogen peroxide and a little detergent for approx. 1 minute for similar results.
you learn something new everyday. Its really cool to know that part of the world. Garlic is the most potent. You can get the smell on your clothes and its hard to get it off. Great video.
I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned already but this also works with onions which was a life saver. A single hand peeled onion = a day and a half of rank fingers. Blech.
Hey, I just made a maranara sauce with lots of garlic and onions. I just wet my hands and rubbed my hands around the s/s sink and it really works!! Odor was gone in seconds.
Thats a fantastic tip. However there's no puree here but a ton of particles to cook via pressure, microwave, steamer or boiling, with enough liquid Garlic flavouring + a minimarket worth of spices for the attraction of fish. My wife will still walk faster than a good lady visiting Gambia at Badala Park (lovely btw) or the garlic breadpaste that can take itself fishing!
Frankly, Jason, I love the smell and taste of garlic and onions. Most folks don`t, especially in the breath. Maybe if you put a stainless steel spoon in your mouth after eating it... neat experiment for you to try.
i wonder if this works with capiscum (chili peppers). it would help those of us who wear contact lenses -- the oil can stay in your fingers for hours and when you take out your lenses at bedtime -- eek!
wow if that works..I owe you one! Being Indian, I use garlic in my everyday cooking and boy do I hate smelling it later! I spray a little oil on my fingers before I chop, helps a bit.. =)
this is totally true. i saw these stainless steel balls (go ahead make ball jokes!) on sale at a bed bath and beyond and they are supposed to remove onion or garlic smell.
Don't have a stainless steal sink, I have a marble/granite sink, do you have any other tips to how to remove garlic odor from your hands or was that the only tip you have? :o)
Jason, the trick I learned for this is to rub your fingers (carefully, please) against the stainless steel knife you used to chop or peel the garlic with while under the running water from your sink before using detergent on the knife. You both clean the knife and get the smell off your fingers all in one step. Please comment. Best wishes.
Jason! This totally makes sense now! At Crate & Barrel they sell stainless steal bars in the shape of a soap bar. It confused the heck out of me, but it just all clicked now! hahaha! Thanks!
I have this little round stainless steel thing, that is just for that. I was shocked at how well it worked. It's strange but yes stainless steel does remove that odor very well.
It's because that the stainless steel isn't an completely stable ion, so basically what happens I think, is that the elements composed to make the steel need some electrons or protons.. and Sulfur tends to seep into the metals to become stable the bad part about this is that the steel can go bad faster with impurities in it. (Same goes for poly unsaturated oils, they go bad 100x faster then butter hyrdogenated oils.. but usually its iron oxide that invades because people fry in caste iron)..
I wish the smell only lasted for hours... My hands have smelled like garlic for at least 3 days hahah im not kiddin. Ill try this and see how it goes

You need to wash with toothpaste to remove even the worst odors.

Oh, but I love the smell of garlic!
I also love pickles. And completely capable (and willing) to drink vinegar.
I <3 raw onions too.
Muahahaha

This would probably work with non-laminated wood too, not just steel. Of course, you're quite likely to get splinters using wood.
