  • To get it right.......... it was the breeder Nevile Duncan who saved the horse...... he is the man that made Fred Kersley........ if you have seen any WA footage of races.... you will note that all the horses in the colours of Northerly.... are the Colours of Oakland Park Stud........ The owner of that stud being Nevile Duncun..... Fred Kersley's are Purple and gold...............

  • Sorry last msg was @bgardiner2000.

    Cheers

  • Fred Kersley knew his horse would die rather than give up and carrying that weight anything could've happened.. Shows the love and respect he had for his great horse...There's a great book simply called Northerly which I recommend!! Great cup today except I backed Red Cadeaux!! $14 the place is always nice tho and half the tri!!! can't believe mo one rated him when he had a nice 4 kilo weight advantage on the other Europeans and had been running well!!

  • I don't recall anyone winning caulfield cup (not an easy race to basically lead from the start carrying 58) then cox plate next week since the great Northerly!! This is a horse who's heart stopped at birth and Fred Kersely saved!!! Born a fighter for life!! One of the greats of the turf!!

  • @dodgyworld21 He'd have won the Cup that year as well had he not been given the grandstand to carry. Hats off to connections for not running him. How he managed to achieve the same rating as Sunline who he beat 3 from 3 times is anyone's guess and just demonstrates how underrated Australian horses have been in the past.

  • @bgardiner2000 How Northerly got asked to carry 60kg (having never run at the distance) against Vinnie Roe I'll never know. And now Americain gets 58kg having already won the cup. As well as Makybe Diva carrying the equivalent of 60kg on her third go. It was such a shame he was weighted out.

  • @mrmcslug He was given 60Kg because they knew that anything less and they were gifting him the race. He was THAT good. The way he won the Caulfield with 58.5 he'd have bullied the race with any less weight. FYI Makybe Diva only carried 58Kg when she won her 3rd Cup. Only a mare could win 3. Phar Lap was given nearly 70kg's in the '32 Cup. From memory the next biggest was the 68kg they gave Galillee in '67 & Bart pulled him. It's the relative weight that's important. Northerly was a 130+ IMO

  • my top 4 RETIRED horses ever Might And Power, Deep Impact, High Chap and Northerly. too young for Kingston Town and Intergaze (only horse group 1s at 2,3,4,5,6yo) just missed. Intergaze def most underrated ever

  • @gruesfuy There's a few others from around the place that I'd include on that list. Dubai Millenium was pretty special, as was Curlin. I'd have to put Sea The Stars in as well but he may be questionable given the fact that his career was so brief. Def agree with Deep Impact. IMO his Tenno Sho win in 2006 should have earned 140+.

  • @bgardiner2000 dude you have no idea and i mean that in the nicest possible way please bear with me........I WAS THERE for Deep Impacts 2006 Tenno Sho and as i look to my right i see my Deep Impact 2005 Triple crown shirt still hanging (on its last legs hehe). to put in perspective im an Aussie from Manly and at last minute decided to go see my mate over in Honkers for my birthday in April. he said you know deep Impact is running in Kyoto on the 30th. i said we're there. bullet train from Tokyo!

  • this is a quality field too.

  • They say that you can really measure the worth of a horse by the quality of the competition they beat. Sunline, Lohnro, Defier, Viscount, Fields of Omagh, Freemason, Universal Prince, Shogun Lodge etc. were all scalps at one point or another for the West Australian Tiger. A shame we never saw his amazing talents show-cased overseas.

  • Greg Childs is a bit of a lucky bugger aye? Getting to ride Northerly AND Sunline, I'd have liked to have seen his paycheck between 1999 and 2004.

  • One of the greatest horses of all time.

  • I can never tire of watching this. This is one of the greatest wins in the CC in history. All guts and class

  • tell me about it i used to work with northerly and i still go to nevals house and i c him same with marasco

  • anybody got this in better quality

  • Great great horse. He just kept on winning. He just swept aside Sunline and other horses of the same period. He reminds me so much of Kelso. I would have loved to have seen them in a match race.

  • 10/10 ride from Greg Childs as he had the best record on him 6/6,Shame fred never ran him in the melb cup with the 60kg.

  • No argument here...

  • Perfect ride and he did all the work in the race. I reckon Fred knew the horse would try his heart out if he started in the MC and thats why he pulled out. He would have done himself some damage had he started after the campaign he'd had. The trainer had the horses benefit in mind.

  • god i love freemason.. yeah he wasnt naturally brilliant like the northerly's and lonhros but f**k.. his heart was just as big if not bigger..

    he was a gem <3

  • how wuld you no wat his heart was like

  • I don't even rate the diva above Northerly. What she did may never be repeated but how many times in middle distance races was she burnt off my good opposition. A bit of a freak over 2 miles though.

  • G'day mate, cheers for posting the video. It's hard to compare horses from different era's but I think that there is some evidence that Makybe would have been more than competitive against Northerly, even over middle distances. Timeform rated both horses at a peak of 129. In the 2001 Northerly broke the track and race record in the Australian Cup (2000 metres - middle distance) at 1:59.4. In the 2005 version Makybe smashed Northerly's record with a time of 1:58.73. Makybe was named Champion

  • 2)Australasian Horse twice, Northerly was once. Makybe was also the Middle Distance Champion once on the back of her Cox Plate win and other lead up performances. She beat some pretty good opposition to win these awards. I think that in judging Makybe's middle distance runs one must remember that these races were often a stepping stone in a Melbourne Cup preparation. Overall Makybe won 10 Group 1's and an important Group 1 three years in a row, which is more than Northerly, champ that he was,

  • 3) managed in his actual career. Don't get me wrong, Northerly was a genuine superstar on his day and I think he tends to be sadly under-rated. I just think that Makybe deserves respect too and that a series of hypothetical races between them would not be as much of the foregone conclusion that your words indicate. All the best mate.

  • My words only indicate what they say... I would not rate MD ABOVE Northerly. I wouldn't rate her over him even though in terms of statistics she eclipses what he achieved in his career... which will always be advantaged by the fact that she was a mare. I don't think that is indicating a foregone conclusion at all. Thanks for the feedback though.

  • G'day again, I cetainly didn't mean to offend you mate, just conversing. I am sorry that you were offended by the conclusions that I made from your initial comment. To explain, you said that md was often burn't of by good opposition over middle distances and that you didn't rate her above Northerly, a middle distance horse himself. This lead me to the belief that if MD was burn't of by merely good opposition as you said then what result must you predict if Northerly had raced against her?

  • Regardless of that, may I sincerely apologise if my words offended or misrepresented you in any way. I certainly never intended any offence. All the best mate.

  • Sorry if I sounded offended. I wasn't offended at all. You're right that she was often being prepared for distance races... but given she was generally in the lighter half of the field in handicaps. Northerly carried 59kgs in the 2001 Oz cup. MD carried 55.5 in 05. At equal weights at middle distance I think he would have had her measure.

  • No worries mate, above all I thank you for the video and I think we both agree that both were champion horses. At equal weights & middle distance I think that's probably a fair opinion. Obviously, my opinion differs slightly, but I can agree to disagree so to speak. I think the part about generally being in the lighter half of the field was probably true prior to the 1st cup win, I'm not so sure about after that. I feel that the 59kg Caulfield & 58 kg Melb. cup were pretty comparable performance

  • 2)<s. It's been nice chatting with you my friend, but I think I will take the opportunity now to bow out graciously (hope that's how it's spelt). Sorry to have taken up so much comment space. All the best.

  • Your points are my exact sentiments.

    MD's MC 3rd win with 58kgs....FREAKISH!

So not sure what Bg2000 is on about re:weight issue.

  • how would u no u only no him of his racing not out of racing i do

  • out an out star. A true champion of the turf. 2000m was his best distance but he did beat sunline over 1600m. apart from the diva there hasnt been a better horse since northerly.

  • northerly is a great horse but i agree had northerly met sunline in her prime....no contest

  • Sorry but that's a **** comment. No contest you say? There's not been a horse that's raced in Australia EVER where you could say it would be no contest coming up against a fit Northerly. There were some nice horses there in 99. Tie the Knot nearly ran her down and he wasn't half the horse Northerly was. I don't discount what Sunline achieved (especialy at WFA) but she WAS a mare. Northerly lugged 58.5 in the Caul Cup. At her prime in the most pruple form of her career she couldn't have done that

  • I totally agree, Northerly by a mile is the best weight for age horse Ive seen, what other horses beat Sunline 3 times??

  • um excuseme i work for his owners he is the bestest horse ever not only in racing but as a normal horse he is perfect to rug catch hug clean farrier vetand so on and ill tell a secret he loves his bum rubbed

  • Sunline was over the hill by the time they got around to racing each other. If Northerly came up against sunline in 99 or especially 00 it wouldnt have one either cox plates.

  • how can anyone bag out a caulfield cup, and multiple cox plate winner ???????????? DUUUUUH DUH DERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

  • Most underrated horse in the history of the Australian turf. Fair enough to mention him in the same conversation as Sunline but rediculous to bring Octagonal in to the mix. A total joke that the big horse is not in the hall of fame. His form in the spring of 2002 is the most dominent of any since the days of kingston towns 3yo year. More so than makybe diva in 05. However never saw Octagonal, Sunline, Makybe Diva or Kingston Town win the worlds toughest mile and a half handicap with top weight.

  • northerly was a champion, people that say he wasn't dont know what there talking about, viscount, sunline, the diva herself, all champs.

I know northerly and serveral of his owners, he is a champ and always will be.

but the one to watch is the El Presidente.

  • Mediocre opposition?!? No chance. Northerly spotted FOO 4kgs, and FOO was going as well at this time as any in his career, including all his Cox Plate wins and placings.

  • Give the fighting tiger some credit people he carried 58KG to win over 2400metres if you worked in the racing industry you understand what a feat that was.

  • He may have carried 58kgs but this was far from an outstanding Caulfield Cup. Most of the decent opposition were only a few kilos less.

Was a good win all the same.

  • horrendous ride on "Dash For Cash"

  • forgot how poor this field was.

  • Kind of ironic that its Greg Childs riding Northerly to a win, lol.

  • plus wat would Kingston Town do to Foo? he would destroy him! Northerly would not get near Kingston Town at there best! thats a joke to even suggest there even in the same league! Northerly was good but not as good as the King!

  • Kingston Town would absolutely slaughter Fields Of Omagh , but would he do the same to Northely ?

I dont think so. I think if they were both at their best . . kingston town would have him by a long neck and they were most definetley in the same league

  • in a match race kingston town would have stalked northerly then outsprint him unless northerly went early then maybe, maybe not.

  • In a match race no horse would beat northerly because he would just wait until he is challenged and then fight back like he always did to win.

  • To suggest that no horse would beat Northerly in a match race is insane, in fact the BMW where he was beaten by Freemason was as close to a match race as you could get....AND HE LOST! To determine how a match race would be played out one must look at how the race would be run and if each jockey is competent enough to do the job.

A slow tempo would not suit Northerly so he'd have to make a long sustained run out in front. Also any thing less than 2000m and he doesn't have the dash.

  • Agreed. If you ran them off against each other 100 times I think it would have been 55/45 in favour of KT.

  • or Occy in the same class. he beat her everytime and she had no excuses other than he was too good! occy was a great horse but Northerly is far superior! MD she was well placed to win 3cups sure she was great but nowhere near Northerly! he was too good! there is a better horse tho than Northerly tho, and that horse was Kingston Town he won three cox plates and against better horses than Northerly! he won with bad legs as well and i am sure he broke down at least 3 times

  • Northerly performed in the big races but was a lil disappointing in some of his lead up races at times. Sunline was consistant from her first up runs to the big ones. She was as formidable at 1200 as at 2000, Northerly would always be suspect at his first 2-3 runs back

  • won against better horses, northerly won the best cox plate rated of all time with the best 2000m horse in the world from overseas

  • What a crock, the best field was in 1992 when Super Impose won it.

  • Octagonal done amazing things as a 3yr old after racing very well at 2yrs old.

Having to back up as a 4yr old stallion was always going to be near impossible. If he had been retired like most great 3yr olds are B4 turning 4yrs he'd be rated an all time great.

Northerly was lucky to beat the 3yr old Viscount.

  • Well he was a freak! geez i love him! But balthazarsmith u have got to be kidding? to say Sunline

  • Sunline won Group 1's in Sydney, Melbourne, New Zealand, Hong Kong and came close in Dubai.

Northerly couldn't win a race in Sydney against hacks.

  • i used to call her oneline

    her form was usually 11111

  • Ok mate.

  • But of course he did beat Sunline every time they raced.....

  • but yet sunline couldnt beat northerly in all there starts together

  • i agree northerly is a great horse but also got sunline on her downward spiral or sorts

  • very subjective comparing Sunline and Northerly. Whether Northerly would've been anywhere near where Sunline was during 1999 and 2000 is a moot point.

  • He may not have the win/loss record that others do, but he was a big game player. Not many horses can claim cox plate, aust cup and caufield cup on there record. This was arguably one of the best wins in the cup, he did all the work up front and was a sitting duck at the 200, but as usual he never gave in and all with 58kg. At the time was disappointed he didnt run in melb cup, but think in hindsight that he would have won or did some damage trying too.

  • great run considering he was the top weight and how hard they went early had no peace and still wasnt run down.

  • Best horse ever is always subjective, but he did beat Sunline every time they met.

  • At last, someone with a reasonable POV.

  • best horse ever erm except for sunline and octagonal and makybe diva

  • Couldn't rate any of them ahead of Northerly. He beat Sunline on her merits every time they met.

  • At 3yrs old Octagonal won a Cox Plate and the Sydney Triple Crown (run then at Canterbury 1900m, Rosehill 2000m, Randwick 2400m) against Saintly, Filante and Nothin Leica Dane.

In between the Rosehill Guineas and the AJC Derby he won the WFA BMW Stakes...That's 4 G1's in 5 weeks against the Crop of the Century.

  • best horse ever

  • One of the most under rated horses in the modern era of racing. He would have beat Makybe Diva. Its a shame he broke down when he did. He was a true champion

  • Another Power House Northerly Run. 58kg and outside the leader and the field was not that bad that included a two time cox plate winner.

  • For sure. He paid quite well also. I have no doubt that he would have run a great two miles. Would have been killed by the handicapper but he just cruised so well and relaxed in his races that I think he could have given Makybe Diva a run for her money. It's just a pity that these great horses can't race forever.
