  • When my mom came in I switched to Viral Death cause it was easier to explain?

  • If i has yellow flowers and they dry out is that good? Also When do you know when you know when the water melos come?

  • @kiyafarm= Nice vid lad....good looking Melons in the background too. Been researching melons myself, and found your video.

1 thing my grandma taught me in her VERY fruitful/sucessful garden, was as the melon gets bigger, elevate it a bit, on something like an upside down coffee can, this keep the melon from getting a soft spot from being on the damp ground, (when it actually rains), plus this makes it easier to find, as the vines & leaves tend to "hide" their fruit.

  • also= I also learned it can't help to gently turn them occasionally whether or not they are elvated, as this allow them to soak in the suns goodness. So how are things going at this time with your melons, and is 4 months a definite ideal timeframe to watch for?

  • Oh, no water involed then eh.

  • I am in Melbourne and its March 20th. Watermelon fruit are just coming out. The biggest is about four inches long. How long will it take for the fruit to mature? and is it to late in the season for them?

  • You should have a girlfriend with you with nice melons helps the video ratings lol..

You know Love the Australian voice haha love the review just put alot of water on the melons and have a wet T-Shirt contest.

  • not ripe yet? just pop 'em in a bag with a bunch of bananas!

  • My Girl friend has 2 nice sides Melons

  • Hey my watermelon plant's vines are only growing to about 15 in then they stop. The plant looks healthy but it's not getting as big as it should. Do you know what's wrong with it?

  • I know the dissapointment of slicing a green one open. It's a bummer. Hope you had a better outcome this year and happy gardening

  • Watermelon

When the stem curls and turns brown and the place where the melon touches the ground turns yellow, it's ready. Rap it with your knuckles and listen for a dull, hollow sound.

  • nice video thanks,very informative.

  • I am trying to Harvest a couple myself for the first time. Take a look at wh

    at I got

  • That's terrific news. Good luck with your crops. I'm looking forward to more vids from you. Best...

  • is that a squash in the bed behind you? it may have been what cross-pollinated your watermelons. I just planted squash and melons i the same bed and have just found out that it's a bad idea. I'm hoping the bees in my garden will sort it out for me...there's always next year. Good luck.

  • @hoofmama

That is an old wives tale! Just don't take the seeds from your watermelon plant and expect to get the same kind of watermelon.

  • Those water melons are ready maybe another week but they look ready.

  • I have a plant and the watermelons are turning black and rotting off the plant befro getting larger? We had allot of rain and bad humidity! Could this be the problem? I have 3 of them that are still perfect and huge now. But no new starts are getting bigger before turning black. Can you help?

  • @piggylover368 if its to stiff you can soften it by placing it in boiling water & let the water cool as it sites there or as you use it it will go soft thats how i do it. hope this helps

  • @piggylover368 hi hope you get this, my family grown lots of luffas growing up it to easy you can grow then along the fence line or a trellace they seem to grow wide more than hight they only grow for 4-6 mounths & they are a big plant all you need to do is water, feed if you like 1 plant will give you a lot of luffas, as the plant dies out remove the luffas, leave to dryout & in a few weeks you can peal off the dryed skin with your hand shake & work the the seads out & its ready.

  • It needs to have a yellow belly. That's what a watermellon grower told me. I see people pounding on watermellons in the store all the time. I find one with the biggest yellow belly and it's always yummy sweet.

  • leave the grass, it shades the melons from the hot sun. It takes years of experience to tell if it's ripe. Daddy has been growing since he was a child (mississippi) and he cant tell me how to tell when it's ripe. He just knows.

  • I think you should go on tapping them, as the person who learned in Afghanistan said it is the type of noise it makes here, in Spain they give them a firm pat. If you keep on tapping then you will learn one day maybe in five years but when that time comes you will be pleased with your ability. I would not leave them to go brown they never sell them with brown or yellow patches on them here, if the stalks died maybe its time for them to ripen indoors in a fresh place. Rose

  • Cool videos! I heard that when the bottom of the melon changes to a yellow or brown it's ready to pick. I have not grown large melons but have had some luck with ripe and tasty ones. My dog likes them as well and have a hard time keeping him out of my patch. Keep up the videos.

  • I've just planted my water melon seeds Friday May 7th and this is my first time trying to grow some does any one have any tip for on what to look for cause these are black diamonds Water Melons that i got this to try out and see if i can grow them it take 90 days for them to fully grow i think.

  • when it's ripe... forget tapping....I go by the stem when it starts to brown, another way to tell is when the melon loses it's shine or when you start seeing tinges of yellow(once it's to size) on the melon bottom

  • nice video bud i never have grown melons but i think i will try now. good luck with them

  • Wheres the pot!!??

  • Lol in Afghanistan or some parts of Iran (im not from Afg or Iran) i've learned through tradition you hit it somewhat gently and if the sound is Broad it's unripe or overipe if it has a bounce like sound that means its ripe :P

  • Hey, thanks for the information. I'm just learning about gardening and the nomenclature that goes with it. I've lived a city lifestyle thus far and know very few techniques in how to "live off the land." I found this to be beneficial for beginners like me since it doesn't overload one's mind with too much information to swallow right away.

  • excellent information thank you

  • Comment removed

  • I don't know about those melons but you are gorgeous.

Seriously I think just timing them after planting or the omment about the leaf and tendrils turning brown are good indicators. Good Luck

  • nice melons

  • Watermelons need lots of nitrogen ie manure, you need to try and get some Greek oblong shaped melon seeds, they are the best by far!!

To tell if they are ripe you need to feel for weight, too light in weight unripe too heavy over rip, its all really down to experience........

  • @celticraider1 your weird

  • Awesome

  • A watermelon is ripe when the small leaf closest to the melon, called a spoon, turns brown and when the tendril closest to the melon turns brown--then the melon is ready. In Zone 7, they are never ready until the later part of July or later.

  • @KLisaLisa Good advice. I planted a couple of seeds, but I forgot to label them then transplanted one into my garden. I didn't know if it was a watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber or pumpkin. Turns out that it's a watermelon. I'm hard of hearing, so people telling me to thump it until I hear a certain sound is not going to work for me. I have one eight inches, two three inches and about 40 to 50 inch melons started. The bumblebees love watermelon flowers.

  • @rayme4raw

I can never tell what I am listening for when thumping! This method has always worked for me! I have a video on my channel showing how to pick a ripe watermelon. If you have watermelons growing on the same vine close to each other, you might want to pull the smaller ones off. You have 40 melons on 1 plant?

  • @KLisaLisa Yes, 40 or 50, but they are only 1 inch long. The bumble bees have been buzzing around, they love the watermelon flowers. I've read that certain watermelon plants will produce 75 to 100 watermelons per plant so I'll experiment and keep it well watered. It might be a little late in the season to get all those one inchers to full size and ripe, but live and learn.

  • @rayme4raw

Wow! What kind of seeds did you plant Ray? I thought it was good to get 7 melons on one plant that fully ripened. You should take pictures!

  • Watermelons are ripe when you can push your thumb into either end of it and the melon gives away a little.

  • i heard if u tap the melon n it sounds hollow its ready

  • How awesome! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! We love watermelon! :)

    Peace, Love and Organics!

  • I also picked one way too early, but I treated it like a cucumber and shredded it into a salad, even better than cucumber actually. I have a recipie for cucumber soup and Im thinking of picking another unripe one to try that out with it.

  • I live in Arizona USA and i planted watermelons and about a month after i saw the watermelons grow they started to crack and split. The actual melons broke and split. I dont know why. I wonder if its from the heat and sun or I added too much water or not enough. I dont know. Any tips will help. Thx

  • @lamentame erratic water supply, keep the water regular.........

  • You should try growing yellow doll watermelons they have yellow flesh, that's what i grow, they only get 5/9 pounds and mature very early under 70 days.come check out my video.

    have a good day.

  • They look like suger babys,

allthough like crimson melons give them a fingernail test, Skin that is easily nicked or scraped with a fingernail means that the melon did not reach maturity. Look for rind that has a dull appearance. A shiny rind indicates that is not ready to be picked.

  • You don't really want the vine to be dead when you harvest. What you want to look for is where the stem of the melon attaches to the vine you will see a little curly pig tail tendril emerging from where the stem and vine meet. Its when the tendril turns brown is when you want to harvest. Also a nice yellow spot on the melon's belly is a good indication of ripeness. It's also good to give the melon a nice thump. You'll want to hear a nice drum like sound from it.

  • 5 months since the fruit came on? Are you sure you didn't mean 5 months since the plant came up?

  • Have virulent spraling allover watermellon plants, plenty of fowers end of july not one mellon, Damn!

  • You could try pollenating them yourself, find a female flower, pick it and tip in upside down over a male flower (a flower with a small fruit behnind it), then tap the flower and hopefully you will do the job of the bees! I know this works for pumpkins, but not sure about watermelons....you've seen my lack of success with watermelons!

  • hey i got a young water melon sprout about 1 week old and im not sure how long it takes from sprout to fruit ive heard about 80 to 120 days but im not sure i think mine will produce but i dont know if its too late in the year for it to grow fully or not, its the begining of august here so i was wondering from sprout will this be enough time?

  • @kiyafarm why would you pick the female flower? Isn't it the flower that produces the fruit?

  • @kiyafarm This will work for watermelon's. I do it for mine. You got the Male and female plants confused. The Female plant has the little watermelon attached, and the male flower is the one that produces the pollen.

  • @kiyafarm you wrong bro, you can't pick the female flower, pick the male flower and remove the petal and put it on female flower. Female flower have a large stalk then male flower.

  • @ehswan I worried about growing watermelons because I haven't seen a honey bee in my neighborhood for twelve years. I have one growing now and the bumblebees are going nuts over the yellow flowers. People really need to learn that pesticides over promised and under delivered.

  • Hi, I bought giant watermelon seeds from ebay.

Do you think it will grow to a good big size watermelon as described??

  • If they are true to type seeds I can't see why not. I suspect that the problem I had is that the plant germinated from a hybrid watermelon varitey that I had bought from the shops and these may not produce tru to type fruit again. However if you have purchased heirloom seeds there should be no problem. I am planning myrevenge this year with a huge watermelon crop from good seed stock, keep posted and good luck with your own melons!

  • Know of any good sites where i can order true balck diamond seeds?? those are the best watermelons

  • @kiyafarm I hate the hybrid seeds. I purchased a super sweet cherry tomato and a black cherry tomato plant already started in the store and put each of them into a pot. I'm barely getting any cherry tomatoes out of them. The ones that I started from heirloom seeds are growing and producing fruit like crazy.

  • @baukiki Yes, did you try one this year? How did they turn out? I bought mount hoosier watermelon seeds last week for next year.

  • Ripe date depends on the type of watermelon.

Pumpkin watermelon, and cantelope all do better if they are allowed to grow freely, and are not pruned or trellised. The more folier area they have the larger the melons, and the faster they grow.

The vine should be real easy to pop off the melon when it's done. Just like cantelope.

  • I think your melons were green inside because they were over planted/grown. You should only have two or max three vines per hill, and only two melons per vine should be allowed to grow.

  • do watermelons come back the next year, or is it a one year thing...

  • One ^^

  • Watched a couple of your videos and they have been very informative. Have my first garden and am grateful that you have taken time out to put on videos like this. Once again thanks bro.

  • I like the vid. just starting to garden myself.

  • what happened why didnt you get one ?

  • Yeah thanks man, after all that I didn't get a single water melon! But seeing as I didn't actually plant the seed (it just came up) I can't really complain. Next summer though I am gonna plant the biggest mother watermelons you've ever seen!

  • @kiyafarm I live on a farm in VA and FYI - it is rare that you get any yield of what you want (fruit, flowers) from plants that "volunteer" (ie they grow on their own from a past seed.) I have NO idea why! LOL! You need to plant seeds or started plants on purpose and you will get a healthy start! Let us know if this worked for you this year.

  • i love this video!!! ahhhh that sucked man, you were so looking to sinking your teeth in to a nice juicy watermelon...son of bitch is green in the middle! ahh that sux LOL!

    i love your vibe man!

  • I really enjoyed this video, I'm trying my first watermelons this year. It's interesting to note that your watermelons 'volunteered' and you let them grow, even over your lawn, so cool! - and you got watermelons! Knowing my luck I'll baby them and not get a single one. lol.

I have also read to make good melons tap a pipe (about 2 foot long, 1-3" dia) into the side of the hill so it will go to the roots and you can deep feed and water. I'll try that this year, I'll keep u posted :)

  • nice video my friend, i just planted some today, hope they grow xD

    u australian?

  • put one pine needle on the top of the melon if the needle turns half way around it is ripe.Pick it up an tap it gently and it should be a thunk vibration or thump it it should sound deep.

  • That sounds pretty interesting... I have two melons left over and I am starting to thing that they may have been poor quality seeds that were not heirloom type and therefore not likely to produce fruit true to type. I am going to do a video soon however and will try to incorporate your pine needle suggestion before cutting open the melon. Thanks for the feed back!

  • can u explain this to me more..... please.

i dont get your way ... interesting though.

  • It might seem a bit ruthless (I hate doing it to) but you need to thin them out so that they will grow better (not fighting for root space or nutrients) especially when growing in pots. For your tomatoes, you may also need to find a stake or something to support them as they get bigger and grow fruit. I have just recorded a little video on the cucs I mentioned growing in a pot and will post that later today. Hope that helps. Just post any more questions if you have them. Cheers.

  • love your videos mate, a beginner kiwi here and starting new now lol so your videos are awsome.

  • Thanks for the feedback mate, always welcome especially from a kiwi brother! I hope to post a few more tomorrow and keep it up regularly so stay tuned!

  • If you let plants go they will pretty much do what they do best in nature and grow along the ground, climb or bush so if you want you can just let them go. However with things like cucumbers etc. you can train them up a trellis or along your deck hand rail if you want to save space. Don't forget to thin out some of your new seedlings. It is typical when you plant seeds that you will get too many plants coming up too close together etc. - cont' on next comment...

  • As always its a pleasure watching your videos another question for you, will these do well in large pots on a deck if i let the vines grow up and around the deck ? I was bored and planted every kind of veggie indoors about two weeks ago not really thinking they would grow and now I have got probablly 40 tomato planys 30 watermellon plants squash peppers ect any advice?

  • A seed packet i have says to check the part of the watermelon that is touching the ground, and if it has turned from white to a creamy or golden color, then it is ripe, or if the tendrils near the fruit have dried it may be ripe, or you can count the number of days from when the first female flowers appeared, the watermelon should be ripe in 35 days.

  • Thanks for that, I have actually read the same abou the colour on the bottom and I thought these ones had gone creamy, but obviously not enough. The stalks have now totally dried and I plan to pick another one this week and post the results. Cross your fingers that I will be eating juicy water melon soon!
