Yes, FreeBSD is free. Just go download it. I prefer to download these things using torrents, so I don't use the bandwidth of the FreeBSD project (they have to pay for that, I think, so I just torrent the .iso). There is also PC-BSD which I have just downloaded and am going to try. It is FreeBSD with simplified program installations, like Windows.
The error wasn't important, just the CPU frequency applet complaining because I have an unlocked multiplier (BE X2) and C 'n Q disabled ;). I've removed the applet now...no error!
You have to install Gnome or KDE. If you cd /usr/ports/x11/gnome;make install it will install gnome. If you cd /usr/ports/x11/gdm;make install it will install gdm (this is the graphical login). You need to setup Xorg beforehand as well. I have outlined a few times on youtube and freebsd forums, message me if you want the entire outline.

You don't need to buy it. Just go to the FreeBSD website to get started.
