Michael Cretu is from Romania, his ex wife Sandra (from Germany) was a big star during the 1980’s (Maria Magdalena hit). Together they created Enigma in 1990. The languages used on their records have been English, Latin, French, Indian chanting and Greek (old). Depending on what record it is, a combination of these languages has been used.

Seems that some songs start with the ending of the previous songs or end with the following song, and are not in the right order... Figuring that order out tends to become the true Enigma!

I took a french class in high school and remember almost nothing but when I heard the words they sounded french. When I read the comment posted by Jmpalacios and read Marquis de Sade he appeared french. I looked him up and found out he was. Amazing that after all these years of not hearing nor seeing any french I recognized a name that looked french and words that sounded as if they were too. Strange how that works. Something that is long forgotten and never used can come back in an instant.

One comment that I would make is that the song isn't really called "Sadness", but actually "Sadeness". The name is not a reference to being sad or anything of the sort, but rather to the Marquis de Sade and all his sexual depravations, which is why this music is, ohhh so deliciously intentionally, so sexually charged.
