  • DID YOU MAKE FUN OF DEADMAU5!! D:< 1:05

  • This man speaks what my heart feels

  • Personally, as long as the DJ is energetic, the lighting/stage production is good (for example skrillex's CELL from the mothership tour, or Excision's X-Vision from the x-tour) and the music is good, I consider it to be an awesome show.

  • LOL at the mc devvo impression!!!

  • I don't give two craps if the guy plays music straight from his walkman, I just want some epic music. I feel cheated when there is no show.

  • Man deadmau5 is way better than u , he does more than hit play and bop his head , Dont talk About A legend

  • @yellowboiproductions He wasn't really trying to insult DeadMau5, he said "the least he could do".

Although DeadMau5 does use programs such as Abelton to perform live, alot of his show lies in his lights. He even said it himself in an interview.

  • I am preparing for playing my EBM live and what I will be doing is cutting the vocals and lead synths out of my tracks and doing them live. It's just me but eventually.. hopefully.. I can find band mates. Check my music out!

  • Keep pressing 7 HAHA!

  • @wwwboyinabandcom you look like a very nice guy . some advices for a newbie dj over here?

  • I started out DJ'ing and felt I was cheating. Then I fell in love producing tracks. But all in all I cut up the samples build ups and channels into separate locations and link them to a trigger finger and novation launchpad and use a few of the nobs for effects.

  • oh hai dave from boyinthebanddotcom

  • DUDE PROPS FOR THE BEARDYMAN SHOUTOUT!!!

  • I klicked tihs Video caus of the Word AWESOME Oo

  • this is whats so funny about the producer arab music.... he looks like he is neyo on the mpc..but i know that what is he doing is all the machine..auto timmed , auto looped, auto everything..

  • DIRTYPHONICS!

  • Every electronic musician has a different process and a different outcome. There are a number of ways to perform electronic music live, but the setup should relate to the way the music is made and how people would best receive it in a live setting. You should try and let your live setup develop over time around your strengths. Dave's setup is very cool, a play button with a bag of tricks to prevent looking like a dildo. Simple yet engaging, it suits the outcome, as should any performance method.

  • Hooaaayy :D

  • If i'm intertained by it, i'm good.

  • 0:25 he got a pixely chin

  • skrillex hits play

  • @STEPAdub And he do it also wrong.

  • PLZ do a collab with EPHIXA PLLLLZZZZZZZ

    IT WOULD MAKE MY DAY!!!

  • I dont produce at all but one thing that i really enjoy doing in Audiotool is take the presets and plug it into the lemur (or what ever its equivalent is in Audiotool), and just mess with the settings while the song just plays. Or if i was producing something like dubstep, id take many samples of bass and just mess with them on an mpc, just like you did.

  • xD i Failed 2 times at pressing the links!! HaHa

  • i love the live performence of extrawelt

  • I cut up my songs into sections and play them when I play live... I was always kind of ehh about it because I felt like I was cheating. I would never just press play and chill though... That's messed up.

  • i used to leave shitty comments like you, but then i took a captcha i couldnt solve

  • araabmuzik fantastic man with the MPC

  • Comment removed

  • Do I hear some loopmasters loops?

  • I would say if your just starting out do everything you can, im sure it will be quite little. Then as you get better and hopefully more known increase the difficulty of what you're doing.

If you're just hitting play and relaxing while getting paid to 'perform' then that would be a problem.

  • Random ButtonO_o

  • When I play my Basic Printer (my electronic music alias) stuff, I have 2 guys help me out. Between the three of us, we play Omnichord, analog drum pads, electric bass, electric guitar, synth leads, vocoder, "theremin" and trigger samples. Our samples basically fill in the non-reproducible elements that aren't covered by all of our gear. And, we trigger the samples by verse/chorus, not in backing tracks, for the most part. I pride myself on performing this way...many machines in harmony

  • If youre not playing youre not real to yourself.

  • @fivebythree That sounds like something you would read from a fortune cookie. xD

  • was watching this guy talk quite fast, then i took an arrow to the knee.

  • @faridfaiza Would you kindly remove your genitals and murder your children if you have any so that you are completely removed from the gene pool? Thanks

  • @thewaffleshirt what's your fucking problem? never took an arrow to the knee before? how abt u cut ur balls out and feed them to your pigs in ur backyard? stupid shithead. i bet u hvless than 10 muscles on ur face + a vry tiny pea-brain that u cant take it as a joke, fuckface.

  • @faridfaiza I am so confused... I didn't know that you could insult someone about the amount of muscles in their face. Also, I can take my "vry tiny pea-brain" as a joke, thank you very much.

  • @thewaffleshirt god how immensely stupid can you be? it means u r a very serious asshole who can't take jokes, had such a tight face u can't even laugh (which requires more than 10 muscles obviously). there are many other "took arrow to the knee" jokes in here yet u pick mine out of all WHICH, is not an offensive comment?? so let me fucking ask u again, WHAT'S YOUR FUCKING PROBLEM?? y dont u go and fuck your own ass instead? get a life.

  • @faridfaiza No, having 10 muscles in your face means you were born defective and, depending on which muscles are present, cannot speak, and likely can't blink. You are right with the fact that there are many others. That's why I left the comment, cause there are too many fucking arrow to the knee jokes. And lastly, I do fuck my own ass. Every day. Thanks

  • too too bip

  • i think most part of electronic music these days is the visual display of the performance and of course there are producers like Derek Smith from Pretty Lights that never mixes the same way in each performance.

  • I just want to hear good music and go crazy. That, is all.

  • @shadowlift1 So, you'd spend money seeing DeadMau5 live instead of just going to an electronica club? Or no?

  • impressive is araabMUZIK! now he's impressive! that's a fucking performance!

  • dude, you need cooler glasses!

  • @Woodflamemaster he need John Lennon style glasses. :D

  • was that an A note?

  • Something that is a huge thing for me that i find bad ass is when ppl can play without arpeggiators and the most that can be played and not sequenced is awsome too... but i do understand from writing my own unless you have an orchestra of synth players is impossable :3

  • just cruise control everything except bass, and play the bass live with some synth where you can turn knobs, adjust parameters and look cool (and unmute the bass track/sequencer when you get bored with that?) that's probably what I would do if I was playing solo

  • tim exile amd brdymad r peepole that ply tools of the moosick

  • u rok

  • Pendulum.

The talent is amazing, and there's no arguing about how good the live performance is.

  • Potentially there is that aspect regarding electronic live performance. I personally go for the vibe, the atmosphere and being with so many people who love the same type of music.

  • It's not how hard you want to make it on yourself. it's how much you want to improvise, If you are the type that likes to pretty much wing a song, then of course all the samples, key tones, ect are all on you

  • I totally agree with what your saying in this vid but why don't you ditch the mpc and play a synth live, because although you think it's different, triggering pre recorded samples on a mpc isnt much different from the shit Skrillex does in his live performances.

  • I want to give live looping a go. Like the genius Beardyman that you linked to. I think it's great when the audience knows everything that they are hearing was created just then, not prerecorded and played back to them. Also, I want to try playing real instruments through numerous effects, so they come out sounding like synthesizers. And also, you should check out some live videos of James Blake, and pay some particular attention to the drummer :)

  • cheating is a bad choice of term

but i like to see people do live synth manipulation live cuting of loops and pretty much everything live

although the problem with that is dificult and chances are failure is around the corner

my favorite shows to catch are ridiculase noize shows where some guys bring in giant modular gods and other circut bend tvs and everything is done as is and teaters on the edge of failure and art

  • Skrillex cheats but I still like his music

  • I thought Deadmau5 plays live

  • i like see artists mix up their tracks and chop it all up!

  • Unluckily I'm poor so I ONLY play the track and mash it up! ): (because I can't afford fancy equipment)

But Luckily, I wear a dinosaur "head" hat, while doing it!

    Do I get that?

  • I feel cheated by dead mou5e anyway, think he plays with himself b4 changing it up a bit. But love Bassnectar shows he's changed my life due to his shows.

  • I think that a good live performance is that you have the ability to play the song with a relative difficulty, but not something that really needs practice, it should be more about the actually production of the music, not how hard it is to play. practice doesn't always make perfect, quality time with your tracks and fine tuning makes it perfect.

  • Whats the track in the background called??

  • It's tough for an electronic musician to impress the crowd, no matter how good the music is, or is played. The best shows IMO are when there are live elements. I also think it's cool when electronic musicians can show on a screen, live video of what they're doing. I also love when there is a ton of gear on stage (synths, drum pads, kaos, etc) and the musician(s) are just going bananas tweaking and improving. DJ sets are terribly boring most of the time because crowds just watch and don't dance.

  • I do remember once playing a closing set at a club, back to back with a guy I didn"t know, and we went three tracks each. Whenever he got up to do his three tracks, he would play three hard tracks in a row, slamming things together, scratchin, he went off, but every time i got up, I played something smooth, then something with a build, then something with a drop. He killed the dancefloor every time. I filled it back up again every time. Its all about picking the crowd up and taking them somewhe

  • Its really a matter of perspective. When I DJ at home, I prefer to go with some intense turntableism. To me, thats a real performance, as opposed to see a show like above and beyond, I like their energy, even if the technical side of what theyre doing isnt all that involved.

  • Just because there may not be a lot of technicality going on doesn't mean that the music can't be different.

When i (produce/Dj whatever) live, i make completely different versions of my songs for the performances. and I in some cases will not release that mix right away so that you'll have to come to the shows to hear it.

I pretty sure i'm not the only one doing that.

  • @VSTTutorials It's kinda the fun part of doing live sessions.... why cant people understand that?

  • that Boon Doc guy was good and had cool samples but this guy from Mr. Invisible is a MPC BEAST

    /watch?v=0jLWHKS02LI

  • Producers/DJ's are different than being a performer. Performers put on shows while producers/DJ's give you live music and remixes which are typically made for you to dance to. So it's very different.

  • I think that as long as no 2 live performance's are the same then im happy.Id rather have a mistake by the Live artist than a "set" that hardly changes.

  • woah my kicks sound awesome now

  • Make the live performance different than listening to the music at home. This goes for bands, DJs, whatever. I've seen bands who went on stage, played their set, and left, with minimal crowd interaction. boooooring. I've also seen DJs literally come out from behind the decks and breakdance to their own song. I think Bad Boy Bill used a phallus to scratch during a DMC competition, at one point...

  • Haha

  • Hmm, I like the idea of trying to make as much of the song in a very physical was as possible. I use a laptop on occassion but I'm trying to keep away from it as much as possible. It doesn't want to let me post a link to an example so i'll make a video response..

  • Well in this day and age, lines are blurring between the domains of DJ and Producer. Performance is awfully important, but is a performance just hype? Or is it something different? I believe a performance should be focusing on variety in sounds. If what the producer is playing is (basically) there already pre made work, then it loses interest, however if they are able to incorperate variant and (gasp) improvisational talents, it is indeed a performance and not a playlist.

  • if your intrested in MPC techanicality look up aarabmuzick and jeremy ellis.

  • Dave, In my humble opinion I think that atmosphere is the most important thing at any performance no matter how you create it xo

  • That is the difference between a musicproducer and a DJ..

  • I remember times at the club when de Dj was upstairs next to the lights guy

  • In my opinion, electronic musicians should perform their songs as much as possible i.e. triggering loops/samples manually or playing synths manually, with backing tracks for the parts that would be very difficult or impossible to play live. I have no problem with DJ sets at all, but DJing is really passive to me. I'd prefer to be actually "playing" my music.

  • ME ASUSO ESE WEON

  • A good live perfomer IMO is the one who can interract with the audience and adapt the show in consequence, like Beardyman, quoted in the video.

On top of that, using gear at its limit is also amazing (again, Beardyman uses 4 KP3, 1Kppro, 1WaveDrum and a Microkorg, yeah he digs Korg lol).

  • Can you give some more tutorials on Live performance, I found it rather helpful, since I'm trying to start a drumstep band with my friends.

  • Bro, you best be 7-day-songing the track playing in the background! :D

  • If its a DJ set which most electronic shows are to my knowledge, then I like things that the DJs throw in for extra wows, such as tape stopping, vinyl scratching, bit crushing, filter sweeping etc etc

  • ive seen many famous djs, most recently JFK and Steve Aoki.... The crowd went crazy for aoki, but he had more of a show.... however when i seen JFK, i thought his set blew Aoki's out of the water talent wise..... i dj myself and ide rather see a dj with talent then just a show. needs to be a middle ground. Ide also like to state that Aoki's set was killer, but compared to JFK he wasnt doing much to his decks.

  • As I primarily DJ other people's tracks, (I can't stand my own) I likely have a much higher tolerance for lower effort than a lot of people. However, whatever you're doing should be advertised as such. If you're DJing, don't say you're playing live. It's a DJ set.

  • I reckon you should do a tut on that electro bass

  • All that matters to me is the dj/producer is smashing out good quality tracks and has the crowd raising the roof, with a great atmosphere aswell. I don't care whether they're constantly flicking and pressing different shit, as long as it all comes together in a decent mix I'm happy

  • daft punk, mr ozio and all the french house is doing it right imo, mashing up and messing up all their songs with loops and beat grids and filters and stuff. thats how to perform live

  • good live electronic artist is someone who has alot of interaction with their music on stage, and change it in ways, the more control they have the better generally, a bad track is the opposite, like you said, the one who presses play and just sits there bobbing his head

  • When The Chemical Brothers performed each song was uniquely performed.

Every vid I see of Sk*****x, dude pushes a button, crowd surfs and then pushes another button for the drop. Not a performance IMO.

  • @BitterWhenDead If he's having fun, and if the crowd's having fun, I don't see what the big problem is.

  • @BitterWhenDead you obviously have never been to a skrillex show, he tweaks each track and is IMO one of the most exciting djs to see live,

  • @gearscuptower He's coming to my area, i'll have to check it out. I really enjoy Skrillex.

  • @BitterWhenDead Heres the thing about Skrillex. He has mastered the combination between Electro and Dubstep, and his songs are so unique that he doesn't need to do anything else for it.. its just my opinion

  • @BitterWhenDead EXACTLY. Sk*****x is way overrated and he puts nearly no effort into his newer songs

  • Dave, can you do some videos explaining music theory seeing as I've tried reading up on it but due to my extremely short attention span, I'll usually get distracted by something :) I know you'll make it fun :')

  • 2 artist who i really love, and are totally different in styles are:

    - Jeremy Ellis. probably the best drumpad drummer i have ever seen, this guy is amazing!.

second, The Gaslamp Killer! i really love this guy XD he is the most energetic and eccentric DJ's i have also seen. he is not necessarily technically good. but he puts so much into his performance

  • cool.

  • I saw the prodigy live a couple of years ago, and my mind was literally blown away. Now they really know how to pull off a great show. I would also LOVE to see Pendulum live, I've seen their DVD from Brixton academy, and they were kinda... well, pretty damn good!! :)

  • @blabla12331 i once saw them both in one night! at Roskilde festitval 2010 in Denmark. first we stood in line a couple of hours to be sure we got good spots XD but anyways we were upfront at the fence through the whole show. and i must say Pendulum was one of the best concerts that year. a hour after Pendulum we saw Prodigy, we also decent spots. but the energy was nothing compared to Pendulum.

  • @latheck2 i know what you mean, that's why i would love to see them live someday soon :)

  • The magic of music, there are no rules!!

  • Also do you not like deadmau5 or were you just being amusing about the mouse head thing?

  • The energy behind the show. If there's energy then it ususally solves itself.

  • Yar for electronic music it's good to get a huge multimedia experience...lights, video screens, pyrotechnics...or even theatrics are cool. Watching performances from musicians is cool but only if they have good stage presence and I personally think it's great when all of the above happen. I think if you're a band that doesn't really get into it the same multimedia rule applies...perfect example is Tool...great live show but they don't move much onstage.

  • I like the live element, but that can be a simple as using an apc40 or a launchpad in order to send off clips.

But I think what I look for is presentation of the stage (graphics screen behind, strobe lights, dancers etc) as standing still for a long time will eventually become tedious.

Also, interesting stutters, melodies or filters on tracks live that don't appear in the original song to give variation rather than being something you could hear at home by pressing play.

  • i feel cheated when:

    Justice_performing_with_unplugged_MPC.jpg

  • i feel cheated when skrillex turns knobs when he is playing live as if they are doing something but theyre clearly not. we all know he just presses play and then messes with a load of un-plugged controllers

  • @TIMMEHHURTS I saw some live footage of him and the knobs were clearly doing things. I'm not a fan though, but still...

  • @djangotsp iunno, i have seen a lot where theyre very much doing nothing.

  • "this guy" was awesome :P lol

isnt there a difference between an amazing music producers who create genius tunes... and Genius musicians who can play like Hendrix on stage :P

    very few have both :P

I say if your shit at performing. put money into Lazers n strobes lol... or hire strippers. anything to take the crowds eyes off you standin there doing shit all :P

dont try stripping yourself, holding a strobe whilst wearing a dead animal on your head, ut just dont work :( Ive Tried...

  • Unsubscribed, and then subscribed again. I then repeated this process for a few hours, and my kicks are so punchy that I can't even make a terrible dubstep-style youtube comment describing how much they may be beating up a woman.

  • That head nodding...

    Reminds me of Chuckie.

  • Not really cheating but I'm sure guys all know what I mean: When you find out your favorite electronic music artist is coming to your town and you excitedly buy tickets, only to find out at the last minute that it's a DJ set and not the actual full-fledged performance. I recently had this experience with Pendulum, for example.

  • @MercyStudios Ye but with pendulum they advertise the different shows clearly, you can't get the live show and dj sets confused when buying tickets because they clearly make it noticeable that they are seperate

  • @Olie23231 you're right but it still bummed me out as I have to wait a whole year to see their band show.

  • @MercyStudios I think i'd quite like to see the dj show, i saw the live show over a year ago but I love the mixes they do live, you don't get the same live elements which make pendulum so good live of course but rob swire is a genius behind a dj set, I've seen him do some epic mixes in clubs with the pendulum set

  • What's the song in the vid?

  • The thing is, if there isn`t any chage in the songs u can usually purchase u can as well put on a laptop a few boxes smoke two tones of any drugs u like and get the same effekt i `dlike to get from live Djìng. The DJ or the producer himselve should add something knew to make his awsome track to go boom, and that depends on the crowd i think. welther he simply adds some volcals loops or equing; I don`t know. I`m not a dj ^^

  • obviously you don't know mau5 live set up

  • I didnt get MOAR heaviness in me drums :C

  • when more reason tuts??? :p

  • you'd love nosaj thing but I'm sure you've heard of him :) also Baths

  • Wtf is up with his hand gestures...damn its weird

  • Well... Electronic music performance should be something that doesn't sound like the same stuff on the album. (That ones valid for "normal" bands as well).

It has to sound like something that is made in THAT moment. Not like a... CD-Player...

  • Apparently I don't wear the right head gear. Hah.

  • When it comes to a live electronic performance (besides DJing), I like to hear all the different elements/layers of the songs mixed in differently to the original track, but in a way that makes the crowd go more crazy then just playing the song. When it comes to DJing, I think song choice is most important, decent beat mixing second. When it comes to a YouTube performance I think keeping the music energetic & showing the the possibilities of the equipment in a creative and way is most important.

  • Variety and Originality . By variety , i mean not just staying a one trick pony and just beat matching for instance . Originality - Giving me your distinct style . Make me recognize you next time im at a party or club . Don't be afraid to experiment and going out of your comfort zone .

  • as long as attractive girls show up and the music is an original compostion or remix and it make me want to dance i could care less how they play it, also some interaction with the crowd usually helps. The best electronic show ive seen was soul wax

  • In electronic music performances I like to hear just what I like in any other performance... I don't want to hear the same thing as I do at home.

I like variations either subtle or ones that make the music completely different.

Of course I don't expect that in every music played in a show, but just enough to keep the performance interesting...

I really like the type of performance you did for Skyline.

I feel I'm being ripped off when I go to a performance and I get a prerecorded DJ Set...

  • Keep it up Dave, we love you!! :D

  • Ingrosso fucked up when he went on stage, started his mix and then walked of to grab a smoke??? motherf*ucker....

  • first!

good job man :) love your work
