This fighting isnt really realistic. I take mixed martial arts and in knife self defense you do not want to move in close because even if you gain control of somebodys hand it is very easy for them to twist their wrist and cut you. Stick fighting is the opposit because it can not cut you
I used to just carry around a regular umbrella with a pointed spike....I am deffinatley getting one of these....I'm not going to get arrested for the nightstick I usually carry in my pocket
You carry a weapon too? Times have really gotten ugly and violence, mugging and rape is a common thing. In the past people saw it cowardly and wrong to kill someone, carry a knife, raping, mugging, several on one, kicking etc But in these days they are all everyday things we need to watch out for. I was thinking about night stick too, is it easy to counsel?
This guy is a grappler and he's thinking like a grappler, that's to say, he wants to use it like a lever. I daresay that the most effective way to use this would be more like a spear. There's also a fair number of cane fighting and stick fighting techniques which would likely be quite natural with one of these.
Useful item to be sure, since it is pretty inconspicuous and easy to look over. But the techniques used in the clip will take a LOT of practice to be of any use, which is worrisome. If it's just going to be used as a clubbing device, I'm just worried that it would not deliver enough impact as a weapon. Better than unarmed certainly, but could it actually serve to disarm the bad guys?
The guy is real badass. I built a defense umbrella in high school. I took one of the push-button expanding umbrellas and sharpened the ends of the spokes, so you could jab with it while it was closed. The handle and other half of the stem separated from that and released 3 feet of bike inner speedometer cable that could whip through 1/4" tree branches. And it still worked as an umbrella! Never had to use it, but it would have messed somebody up.
The umbrella is superb. But I'm not a fan of the fancy "arm-lock" techniques; they're very difficult to carry out in a realistic situation.
Instead, a firm jab in the face with the tip of that umbrella is going to end any attack--and the risk of putting an eye out is justified if someone is attacking with a knife, etc.
I agree about the arm lock techniques. They are probably good to know in case an opportunity to use one comes up. But they should not be the first line of defense. If one tries one and misses, that could be what decides the fight, especially if a knife is involved.
John Perkins ,Attackproof/Ki Chuan Do, just came out with a weapons defense series, including cane vs. knife. He is a big advocate of the approach that all techniques must work reliably in the worst of circumstances or be discarded.

Wouldn't the most effective technique with the umbrella be to just run them through like using a spear?
Also, which type of unbreakable umbrella is best for self defence, the crooked handle or the knobbed handle?
Also,is the Jo staff the closest weapon from which to adapt techniques for the umbrella?
Also, what instruction books/dvd's do you recommend from which to learn pure selfdefence techniques for the unbreakable umbrella?
Thank you for any answers:)

I just picked up one of these for walking around the 2010 Olympics hassle free.
Using the umbrella in an open position shields my polymer knife (attached above handle)when coming into play. Surprise for the surprise attacker!

I wouldn't call this self-defence to be honest. These are not basic techniques at all.

Actually rates of violence are going down on average globally.
Perhaps it looks more violent now because non-violence doesn't get in the news.

no they aren't, less people are bothering to report it. They are dealing with themselves or shrugging their shoulders...

You're right. You should know striking and grappling, as well as tactics for various situations, regardless of the weapon.

Where can I get an umbrella like that?
Is that the new brand of umbrella they call the "Kalashnikov" umbrella, made by the same Company that makes the AK-47?
