I think one of the main failings of religion is that it barely survives the application of common sense. I used to be pretty religious when I was very young but even then the moment came when I had to wonder, if an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving God really exists, why would he not just show himself? Even as a child I was never happy with the evasive answers I got, then science gets involved and its all downhill from there. Even if God is real, at the very least he's a complete dick.
this author speaks of the holy books being incorrect, but it is not the holy books that are incorrect it is the context in which it has been taken by human beings. I am not saying the holy books are accurate. I have no valid proof of that. But the Koran does not teach human beings to blow themselves up of course. It is the human being who decided to do so. @sobpatrick The problem being there is no reasoning in that argument. Existence itself is evidence of nothing. "Something exists, therefore creator" just leads you to an infinite regression anyway.

Our existence in an extremely ordered reality absolutely suggests the need for devised boundries to keep that order. Devised boundries completely suggests design. I think one of the main failings of religion is that it barely survives the application of common sense. I used to be pretty religious when I was very young but even then the moment came when I had to wonder, if an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving God really exists, why would he not just show himself? Even as a child I was never happy with the evasive answers I got, then science gets involved and its all downhill from there. Even if God is real, at the very least he's a complete dick.

Also - Harris didn't say he was closed to the possibility. Simply that pointing to the "possibility" of a creator doesn't accomplish anything. He tacitly admitted it was possible, simply that it's irrelevant. Much like the Matrix possibility.

In the former USSR1917-92 atheism/evolution/communism was taught day-care-university. It was illegal to teach Bible to kids. Within months of the fall of the USSR, the Bible was reintroduced back into Russian schools. The main person was Olga Lutsenko&she was an atheist at the time. BTWshe is on youtube. Bibles back then were burned together with their owners and yet these books survived. The very first writings of Jesus had a basis. He speaks of how certainty leads religeous people to believe things about the way we live and what policies we endorse. His own certainty that there is no God, therefore no eternal judgment, leads the atheist to believe there is no eternal consequences to what we do or believe in life. He is just as certain that there is no God as I am that there is a God. If he believed that people shouldn't be certain about these things then he wouldn't be so certain about his atheism.

People fight for the tools they trained in (or attached their identity to for other reasons) with religious zeal. If it happens in IT, I see no reason why it wouldn't happen in other branches of science. The notion that "peer review" is a more than a mere obstacle for dogmatism is laughable: What would you think of clerics "peer reviewing" each other's ideas on God?
