Well...he lived under Austrian occupation...but in the Lands of Czech Crown. He had not dual nationality, he only studied in Viena(Austria). He lived in a closter in Brno. Sorry, I dont have his passport, but I live in Brno, so I have to know...even I study Mendel´s University=)

I just read a biography. He lived in Brno most of his life, but he was born in the Austro-Hungarian empire. He spoke German and had to learn Czech during his studies. Also, the monastery he lived in (and was abbot of after his experiments on peas) was a Germanic monastery.

He was born in a part of Europe called "Österreichisch-Schlesien" in german, I'm sorry but I don't know the historical correct words in english.Österreichisch-Schlesi­en was a part of austria in 1822 when Gregor Mendel was born. After World War I, in 1918 this part of Austria, which was near the border to the Czech Republic became part of Czech Republic. That's why you can't say exactly if he was austrian or czech.Precisely he was austrian at his birth
