"Randomly generated" is a bit incorrect, though the term is often used. It's procedurally generated. All maps are. The area words to any area will always produce the same area every time you enter them, including non-story dungeons. There may be slight differences between the NTSC and PAL versions, but even this is doubtful. The area words are used as a seed to generate all of the topology items and the like, though some areas are special obviously. Not arguing with Naka, just pointing it out...

@chimamiresatoh This dances a fine line, because even random number generators are purely procedural. It's impossible for a computer to generate a random number. It usually takes something that's constantly changing, like the system clock, and performs any number of operations on it to get a seemingly random number. The game here merely takes the keywords as input instead of the system clock, letting the player control the input.

@NakaTeleeli Yes. I agree completely. It pleases me to see someone knows something about programming AND .hack.

.hack seems to use hidden data attached to keywords as the seed for map generations. It makes sense since properties can be attached as named constants to the objects called keywords, and given a priority based on the keyword.

In any case, I was just pointing it out. Oh, oops, I said that already.
