I was on this ship in 1971 and 72 as a BM and a DKSN. These swells are nothing compared to what I've been through! It's rougher than this in the south china sea every day. And, I was in a typhoon in the sea of japan on my very first trip! I learned very early what it was like to be sea-sick. It wasn't fun!
I was on the Anchorage when this video was taken. I have pictures of the waves coming over the bow. It was interesting the first day or so, then it got really old. Seems like we were in that storm for four or five days.
Did anyone know BM1 Monosmith, OS3 Kilpatrick or MR1 Smith? ... That video brings alot of good memories back for me.I did a Westpac and went through shell back and GOLDEN shell back initiation the ol girl.. I stood watch on that Bridge port side look out that was at the end of this video. I remember watching the sun come up and seeing the silhouettes of the Volcanoes as we approached Yokosuka Japan. Thanks for posting this!!
I was on the USS Anchorage from 1987 to 1990. Love the times I had on there. Looking for some of my old shipmates for years. If you run across any let me know,. Would love to tell some old sea stories and catch up..Thanks.... BMSN Ron Hayes
@Jeepers5626 Hey Hayes this is SM3 Warner I served onboard the ole girl with you as well I keep in contact with BM3 Beard, Alston, Kilpatrick and Holt to name a few oh yeah and BMSN Carter as well. I would love to see Chief Solumuli one more time.
I decomed her too... Name, Hooker Holman ring a bell? Arrived on her an E-1 "July 2000" left her a MM2."October 1, 2004" I hated that place at the time, but once I got to the Boxer, realized real quick how good we had it there on the good ol' Anchorage... The best people and best crew/closest crew I ever had a chance to serve with was on her.
When was this taken? I know that ship quite well, only made her last 3 deployments she made on her... Doesn't look anything like the south China sea Jan 2001! Pulled into Hong Kong with the radar broke off it's mast and ships bell, MIA... #1 MMR "SNIPE"
