I can tell you, this Cub fan is one of the 300+ likes. Whether you're a Cards or Cubs fan, Jack spoke for all of us that night. He was a quintessential part of baseball history, one of the greatest broadcasters in the game, & is missed by true baseball fans everywhere, regardless of team affiliation.
Ten years after 9/11, Jack's poem still resonates strongly not only amongst Cardinal Nation, but across the country. As a lifelong Cardinals fan, Jack is the voice of the Cardinals. He is one of the many reasons why St. Louis is one of the most respected baseball cities in the US.
I've always felt the United States' response to the devastating events of September 11th should have been peaceful and reflective of our humanity. I created a video and posted it on my channel to honor those who lost their lives that morning and in the wars that followed. Peace is possible, but it has to start somewhere.
RIP Jack, you will always be in my heart, you are the best sports announcer and one of the best man that has ever lived. I'm only 14 and I still remember this speech :)
@DipLip21 I'm from St. Louis too, you can't be from here and not have the utmost respect, love, and admiration for the great Jack Buck, he is simply Legendary. I am not at all ashamed to say that I shed a tear when that man died.
I am a Yankee fan, but that gave me the chills. Such inspiring words from such a fine man. RIP Jack Buck. Wish your son didn't suck at announcing. You were one of the best. And, as you basically said, God Bless America!
I am a Cubs fan, however I can say that this is one of those moments where everything else seems insignificant compared to what is going on elsewhere. Jack Buck was truly one of the games great voices, and greatest human beings.
I was in St. Louis when Jack read this poem and was lucky enough to be there for his memorial in Busch Stadium. Jack Buck was one of the best of all time and will be forever missed by all Cardinal fans.
My family and I were fortunate enough to be at the game that night. The first game after 9/11. I wish Mr. Buck were alive today to read a follow up poem. Thanks for helping us through a terrible time Jack. You are missed.
I was there that night. It was the first time since 9/11 that I was able to find some sort of peace. Jack Buck was so special and I believed he helped everyone who heard that poem that night to begin the process of going on with life.

The US is not perfect. Bush was not perfect neither is Obama. But we are still the place people risk their lives to reach. we do NOT live in fear. That first game after 9-11 proved that. We were NOT afraid. I go out without fear. They have NOT won. Yes things have changes some for the better some for the worse. Like in everything time will tell.
Thank you to all our military and their families. We appreciate your gifts.
Terror has not won nor has our liberty has been sacrificed. Anytime we have been attacked from outside, we have responded with limiting certain freedoms--the internment of citizens during WWII and the "Red Scare". People have every right to be more cautious of what's happening around them if we're going to continue to be such an open country. At any rate, President Obama is headed in the right direction on overturning some of Bush's policies on terror camps and interrogation tactics.
No, we need more freedom after events like 9/11 to ensure the survival of essential liberty. Our liberty has been sacrificed for security. Where the hell have you been living? Your phone can be tapped without warrant for domestic reasons, forget terrorism. A passport is needed to re-enter the US from Canada or Mexico. Your backpack is searched and you're fingerprinted just to get into Disney World. We're not an open country. Oh and by the way, Reagan apologized in 1983 for the WWII internments.
what is essential liberty? only those enumerated in the Const.? what the Court says are our liberties? you lost some cred when you say Reagan cause that would be like the Founding Fathers apologizing for slavery...
No, you stated internment was to limit freedom. I clearly pointed out that Reagan admitted to it being wrong. Thats a fact. How does that loose cred? Benjamin Franklin stated best those who will give up essential liberty for safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. The Constitution is essential liberty!
Reagan's apology was far too late to have any substantive effect on those were interned. Would you like Bush to apologize to all those who are in terror camps now or after we find out they are not plotting against the US? California is Reagan's homestate. It was self-serving. Ben Franklin was thinking of the French rev. not what was actually put into practice at the time of the signing of the Const. Point is liberty withtheConst.and ourhistory as the base is what you are willing to fight for.
I may have misunderstood what you originally meant and vice versa with yourself trying to understand me. Anyway, we're both entitled to our opinion's. Take care my friend. Peace.
Can't you all wake up and understand that the truth about 9/11 has still not been told and all the security measures implemented since have done nothing but to help destroy our liberty. Terrorists don't just want death and destruction, they want to change things. We now live in fear as a country. Terror has clearly won. WAKE UP!!!
for the last 2 comments my response is whether we were searched to get in the stadium or something of this being a load of crap the point of it is Jack was a centerpiece of STL sports for many years and he wasnt even a player, his speech was for us to get back to normality the best we can after the disaster which occured and baseball restarting was a step in the right direction every1 in this area respected him so the fact it was Jack there gave a comforting feeling no1 else cud have pulled off
The US hasn't returned back to normality. We live in fear as a nation and the fact that every stadium now has search points at every entrance is proof. If we returned to normality we would of told those that oppose us to kiss off and that we're not going to change one bit no matter how much they try and scare us. More and more cities are putting cameras on public roads/sidewalks/parks all in the name of safety and to prevent attacks. All of it is sold through fear. We have not returned. Wake up!
In reality we should have been doing that a long time ago. Not just because a terrorist could do something but anyone could have brought a gun in or so forth.
I do not know anyone who is afraid at the games (other than loosing to the cubies that would be horrible :p ) The cameras are not to protect from attacks but robberies from out own people.
Yeah i feel threatened by my own government and you and everyone else should too. Cameras don't prevent crime and are a waste of tax money. You're under the impression that if someone holds a gun to your head instantly someone sees it, the police arrive and everything is fine, however the second the gun is pointed it's fired. Yeah the camera caught it but your still dead and the gunman was wearing a ski-mask. Those who want security over liberty deserve neither. Wake up people!
LOL I do not live in fear. It is ashame you do. Camera are a deterant to some not all true. Metal dectors, or someone looking through backpacks is a simple messure. Yes someone WILL get something through. If you do not like any of these things you should stay in your home. I do not see cameras in banks as a threat or anywhere else to my liberty. If I don't want to be taped going into walmart I will not go.
I wonder where you live to be so afraid and angry.
I made it very clear when talking about cameras i specifically meant cameras that surveil public places like city streets, sidewalks, parks, bridges, etc. These are police state measures. Don't give me a bunch of crap that as long as you're doing nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about. If that is your mindset then you've already cowered to the tyrant government. I'm sure than any of you folks wouldn't mind a camera in your bedroom so the government can watch you have sex with your spouse.
Obviously, you did nt make that clear. Gee you are awful angry. Are you angry with obama or bush?? Or is it the entire US government. I bet that if your loved one was raped and one of those cameras caught the animal that did it you would not be bitching about them. Would you say NO do not use that evidance because it is a police state measure? I bet not.
I am done with this as I do not want to disrespect the thread. I appologize to the owner for letting it get this far.
First off that's a demagogic argument and i wouldn't be surprised if things like that have been staged to scare the public into accepting such measures. When you get tasered by some cop on a power trip because you simply questioned why they pulled you over while driving then you'll see the light .Hell yes i'm angry at the two party dictatorship called the Democrats and Republicans. We need to destroy these two parties that are destroying our country. Peace out!
"Don't give me a bunch of crap that as long as you're doing nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about."
Certainly that is not true for everyone. But generally, nothing bad is going to happen to you if you stay out of trouble. Freak killings and accidents happen, but people getting murdered are usually caught up in something bad themselves.
do you live your daily life in fear? Neither do I. Preventative measures taken by the government or in massively public places are not a bad idea or some sign of weakness.

Just shut your trap. You're obviously weak and want tyranny. You probably feel patriotic seeing a police officer with an M-4 in a subway station. You probably feel it's a matter of duty to allow yourself to be x-rayed in a body scanner at an airport. This is all put in place by stealth to indoctrinate weaklings like yourself to accept a police state control grid. You're not safer because of it and you're not part of the establishment! Wake up!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Excuse me but who the hell is using fear? Me?, or the government and police by saying if these absurd security measures aren't in place you're gonna die? You obviously can't see how all of this is no different then what went on in Nazi Germany and the former Soviet Union. But just because we live in a country called America that prides itself as the land of the free and the home of the brave that makes it all right to you. You're a "sometimes to have freedom you have to give up freedom" slave!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You'll be the first in line to take the RFID chip up the ass when it's mandated and sold as being patriotic and helping to fight terror. Just as long as you get to keep watching your stupid sports and brainwashing TV shows like Dancing with the Has-beens you'll gladly comply.
How does a pat down at a sporting event hurt you? It doesn't. It will only effect you if you're carrying a gun or bomb into the stadium. Despite what you think, people aren't sheep. Just because there isn't mass objection to searches at a sporting event (which are done by STADIUM PERSONNEL NOT THE GOVERNMENT, IT IS THE CHOICE OF THE RESPECTIVE LEAGUES) doesn't mean people are ripe to have all their civil liberties violated. YOu aren't the only smart person in the world.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
To make a long story short, all these measures are small pieces of a puzzle to make the US a totalitarian, control grid police state. Excuse me for caring about our countries Constitution and Bill Of Rights!
The government is not making these sports have these check points. They DID in the first two years after 9/11 but they DO NOT anymore. It is at the discretion of the leagues to do this! They hire outside companies to come in.
You paranoia towards the US government is misplaced, they are not enforcing these checkpoints at sporting events!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It doesn't matter who is behind the measures, the point is they're signs of fear, and in a country that claims to be the land of the free and the home of the brave they're extremely detrimental to our liberty. A police state is just around the corner if we allow all of this to continue. Don't come crying to me when you're pulled over one day and a cop makes you give them your fingerprints on the spot for security. Don't think it's possible? It's already happening in the UK. US soon will be next.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well....sentimentalism aside, a lot of what's said in this poem is a load of crap I'm afraid. With the recent discovery of active nano thermite (hi tech incindiary explosive in the World Trade Centre dust) it's now more clear than ever that certain elements with the U.S establishment themselves carried out 9/11. Please research it and demand a proper criminal enquiry into 9/11.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yeah, looking back on this i can't believe how naive we all were. Look at the hypocrisy of this moment, all the talk about freedom and not letting terror overcome us but everybody who entered this game no doubt was probably just short of strip searched just to enter. Definitely a victory for terror.
This is the most stupid speech I have ever heard. "We do not covet the possessions of others", "war is just not our nature"... really? What an idiot. Wake up America, the world exists beyond these borders.
Jack Buck will always be a part of the fabric of St. Louis. His words that night enshrined him in the hearts of many Americans nationwide during one of the most difficult times in American history. God Speed Jack and so long for just awhile!
Jack Buck is, quite simply, the greatest play-by-play man who ever lived. This was a classic. Fitting for the last major thing he'd do before he'd leave us.
I'm an Astros fan and while we have a rivalry with the Cardinals (I do respect their franchise), I can't possibly say anything bad about Mr. Buck. Maybe it was all those years before I moved to Houston where I'd lay at night by my radio in Oklahoma as Jack brought baseball to life. But my opinion is he's the greatest who ever lived.
Jack Buck...his simple calls of historic moments are classic...unmatched by any other announcer in baseball history...and we'll see you tomorrow night...
omg what a load of shit. typical american shit challenged by rock throwing Arabs, no choice you have to go and take their oil. give yourselfs a big clap on the back, and don't believe physics, cos the bad terrorists blew up 9 11, pity the terrorists are YOU
Thanks for the memories of sportscasting, for being in my home on the weekends broadcasting games from local affiliates, CBS, fox, others. You have brought the future into my sons life as a human of beauty......I thank you!!!!!!
I know this is an 8 month old comment.. But he did indeed have parkinson's, as well as battle lung cancer, which is why he looked so "yellow" in person. They kind of fixed it up a bit for television, which is good, he should be remembered by looking healthy.
With all due respect to the way New York welcomed back baseball from 9/11, this situation truly didn't recieve the attention and credit it deserved simply because it didn't take place on the East coast.
I cannot believe that there are not anymore hits on this!! I was I Lubbock, Texas when this happened and phoned my Dad to tell him to change the channel to see it. I am so glad that we live here and that I can now play it for him via recording from this site.
As baseball fans and Americans, Thank you Jack Buck and THANK YOU to all that have protected my freedom to be a teacher, a baseball fan, a football fan, a basketball fan and, SIMPLY AN AMERICAN!!!! WE HAVE IT SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!
I was lucky enough to meet this man when I was about 10 years old and even then as a 10 year old I thought what a class act. I listened to him on KMOX for years and i felt like i knew even then. Class all the way R.I.P
Great video.. I would have loved to see the conclusion of his speech where he talked about baseball starting again. "I don't know about you, but as for me, the question has already been answered: Should we be here? Yes!"
Good God did you hear how quiet it was during the fireworks...it was like a huge 21 gun salute...9-11 haunts me everyday of my life to a certain degree even though the passage of time has eased the pain a little...you can never replace guys like Jack Buck an American Original!!!
I forgot how I felt about this video until I just saw it again. Once again tears came to my eyes!! ABSOLUTELY FANTATIC AND BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! THANK YOU IMMENSLY FOR ADDING THIS!!!!!!!!
I was lucky enought to be at this game and it was incredible. The way the city of St Louis marched all the brave service men and women around the field was amazing. Jack Buck was a great anouncer and an even greater american. God Bless Jack Buck
This is simply incredible, truly an amazing poem. Sadly Jack Buck would be gone less then a year later, and this is a fitting final moment for this man.
this game right here really got the US back into a normal flow kinda..and im a cards fan..it was this great announcer that brought back baseball in one of the greatest baseball towns there are
Would have been better without the background music, but powerful nonetheless.

At any rate, President Obama is headed in the right direction on overturning some of Bush's policies on terror camps and interrogation tactics.
tobysaviano 2 years ago
No, we need more freedom after events like 9/11 to ensure the survival of essential liberty. Our liberty has been sacrificed for security. Where the hell have you been living? Your phone can be tapped without warrant for domestic reasons, forget terrorism. A passport is needed to re-enter the US from Canada or Mexico. Your backpack is searched and you're fingerprinted just to get into Disney World. We're not an open country. Oh and by the way, Reagan apologized in 1983 for the WWII internments.
ciccone39 2 years ago
what is essential liberty? only those enumerated in the Const.? what the Court says are our liberties? you lost some cred when you say Reagan cause that would be like the Founding Fathers apologizing for slavery...
tobysaviano 2 years ago
No, you stated internment was to limit freedom. I clearly pointed out that Reagan admitted to it being wrong. Thats a fact. How does that loose cred? Benjamin Franklin stated best those who will give up essential liberty for safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. The Constitution is essential liberty!
ciccone39 2 years ago
Reagan's apology was far too late to have any substantive effect on those were interned. Would you like Bush to apologize to all those who are in terror camps now or after we find out they are not plotting against the US? California is Reagan's homestate. It was self-serving. Ben Franklin was thinking of the French rev. not what was actually put into practice at the time of the signing of the Const. Point is liberty withtheConst.and ourhistory as the base is what you are willing to fight for.
tobysaviano 2 years ago
I may have misunderstood what you originally meant and vice versa with yourself trying to understand me. Anyway, we're both entitled to our opinion's. Take care my friend. Peace.
ciccone39 2 years ago
Can't you all wake up and understand that the truth about 9/11 has still not been told and all the security measures implemented since have done nothing but to help destroy our liberty. Terrorists don't just want death and destruction, they want to change things. We now live in fear as a country. Terror has clearly won. WAKE UP!!!

amazing speech
hollywoodproducer108 2 years ago
for the last 2 comments my response is whether we were searched to get in the stadium or something of this being a load of crap the point of it is Jack was a centerpiece of STL sports for many years and he wasnt even a player, his speech was for us to get back to normality the best we can after the disaster which occured and baseball restarting was a step in the right direction every1 in this area respected him so the fact it was Jack there gave a comforting feeling no1 else cud have pulled off
thenigma23 2 years ago 2
The US hasn't returned back to normality. We live in fear as a nation and the fact that every stadium now has search points at every entrance is proof. If we returned to normality we would of told those that oppose us to kiss off and that we're not going to change one bit no matter how much they try and scare us. More and more cities are putting cameras on public roads/sidewalks/parks all in the name of safety and to prevent attacks. All of it is sold through fear. We have not returned. Wake up!
ciccone39 2 years ago
In reality we should have been doing that a long time ago. Not just because a terrorist could do something but anyone could have brought a gun in or so forth.
I do not know anyone who is afraid at the games (other than loosing to the cubies that would be horrible :p ) The cameras are not to protect from attacks but robberies from out own people.
I am sorry you feel so threatened.
pmteet 2 years ago
Yeah i feel threatened by my own government and you and everyone else should too. Cameras don't prevent crime and are a waste of tax money. You're under the impression that if someone holds a gun to your head instantly someone sees it, the police arrive and everything is fine, however the second the gun is pointed it's fired. Yeah the camera caught it but your still dead and the gunman was wearing a ski-mask. Those who want security over liberty deserve neither. Wake up people!
ciccone39 2 years ago
LOL I do not live in fear. It is ashame you do. Camera are a deterant to some not all true. Metal dectors, or someone looking through backpacks is a simple messure. Yes someone WILL get something through. If you do not like any of these things you should stay in your home. I do not see cameras in banks as a threat or anywhere else to my liberty. If I don't want to be taped going into walmart I will not go.
I wonder where you live to be so afraid and angry.
pmteet 2 years ago
I made it very clear when talking about cameras i specifically meant cameras that surveil public places like city streets, sidewalks, parks, bridges, etc. These are police state measures. Don't give me a bunch of crap that as long as you're doing nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about. If that is your mindset then you've already cowered to the tyrant government. I'm sure than any of you folks wouldn't mind a camera in your bedroom so the government can watch you have sex with your spouse.
ciccone39 2 years ago
Obviously, you did nt make that clear. Gee you are awful angry. Are you angry with obama or bush?? Or is it the entire US government. I bet that if your loved one was raped and one of those cameras caught the animal that did it you would not be bitching about them. Would you say NO do not use that evidance because it is a police state measure? I bet not.
I am done with this as I do not want to disrespect the thread. I appologize to the owner for letting it get this far.
pmteet 2 years ago
First off that's a demagogic argument and i wouldn't be surprised if things like that have been staged to scare the public into accepting such measures. When you get tasered by some cop on a power trip because you simply questioned why they pulled you over while driving then you'll see the light .Hell yes i'm angry at the two party dictatorship called the Democrats and Republicans. We need to destroy these two parties that are destroying our country. Peace out!
ciccone39 2 years ago
"Don't give me a bunch of crap that as long as you're doing nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about."
Certainly that is not true for everyone. But generally, nothing bad is going to happen to you if you stay out of trouble. Freak killings and accidents happen, but people getting murdered are usually caught up in something bad themselves.
helorm341 2 years ago
do you live your daily life in fear? Neither do I. Preventative measures taken by the government or in massively public places are not a bad idea or some sign of weakness.

Just shut your trap. You're obviously weak and want tyranny. You probably feel patriotic seeing a police officer with an M-4 in a subway station. You probably feel it's a matter of duty to allow yourself to be x-rayed in a body scanner at an airport. This is all put in place by stealth to indoctrinate weaklings like yourself to accept a police state control grid. You're not safer because of it and you're not part of the establishment! Wake up!
ciccone39 2 years ago
Oh yeah and you're probably one of those retards who think the government was behind 9/11.
Ciccone, you wake up, you fear mongering bastard. People like you just LOVE to make people fear for their lives.

You'll be the first in line to take the RFID chip up the ass when it's mandated and sold as being patriotic and helping to fight terror. Just as long as you get to keep watching your stupid sports and brainwashing TV shows like Dancing with the Has-beens you'll gladly comply.
ciccone39 2 years ago
How does a pat down at a sporting event hurt you? It doesn't. It will only effect you if you're carrying a gun or bomb into the stadium. Despite what you think, people aren't sheep. Just because there isn't mass objection to searches at a sporting event (which are done by STADIUM PERSONNEL NOT THE GOVERNMENT, IT IS THE CHOICE OF THE RESPECTIVE LEAGUES) doesn't mean people are ripe to have all their civil liberties violated. YOu aren't the only smart person in the world.

To make a long story short, all these measures are small pieces of a puzzle to make the US a totalitarian, control grid police state. Excuse me for caring about our countries Constitution and Bill Of Rights!
ciccone39 2 years ago
The government is not making these sports have these check points. They DID in the first two years after 9/11 but they DO NOT anymore. It is at the discretion of the leagues to do this! They hire outside companies to come in.
You paranoia towards the US government is misplaced, they are not enforcing these checkpoints at sporting events!
helorm341 2 years ago

It doesn't matter who is behind the measures, the point is they're signs of fear, and in a country that claims to be the land of the free and the home of the brave they're extremely detrimental to our liberty. A police state is just around the corner if we allow all of this to continue. Don't come crying to me when you're pulled over one day and a cop makes you give them your fingerprints on the spot for security. Don't think it's possible? It's already happening in the UK. US soon will be next.

Why real "terrorists" ( USA elite, CIA) wanted 9/11 terroracts?
* to round constitutional rights with antiterrorist laws ( Homeland security, Patriot act, Real id)
*invade Iraq for oil
*invade Afganistan for oil and pipelines
* big corporation interests in gun trade and chaos in Iraq and Afganistan.
* turn USA in police state ( laws controlling "terrorists")
terrorist in their thoughts are free US citizens
Real id coming to us!

Yeah, looking back on this i can't believe how naive we all were. Look at the hypocrisy of this moment, all the talk about freedom and not letting terror overcome us but everybody who entered this game no doubt was probably just short of strip searched just to enter. Definitely a victory for terror.

Jack Buck will always be a part of the fabric of St. Louis. His words that night enshrined him in the hearts of many Americans nationwide during one of the most difficult times in American history. God Speed Jack and so long for just awhile!
AndyMac94 2 years ago 2
Jack Buck is, quite simply, the greatest play-by-play man who ever lived. This was a classic. Fitting for the last major thing he'd do before he'd leave us.
I'm an Astros fan and while we have a rivalry with the Cardinals (I do respect their franchise), I can't possibly say anything bad about Mr. Buck. Maybe it was all those years before I moved to Houston where I'd lay at night by my radio in Oklahoma as Jack brought baseball to life. But my opinion is he's the greatest who ever lived.
