China does not have to reduce emissions because China houses 20% of the world population and it still has lower emissions than US (around 18% of total emissions). On the contrary US accounts for around 4.5% of world population and around 22% of world CO2 emissions. So if you would look at it in terms of per capita emissions, US per capita emission is about 5.5 times the per capita of China.. conti...

China is now the largest emitter of green house gases and is increasing rapidly. They care about getting wealthy then the enviroment as does the US thus neither nation is reducing emitions.

On the other hand, Kyoto protocol was designed for the period 1990-2010. I'm sure that China will be asked to control emission in the Post-Kyoto protocol. I read an article llast summer before the olympics and it clearly showed that China surpassed the US. My point is that if we are all eventually supposed to get off of norenewable resources then why is

China allowed to invest drastically in them. It would then have to replace all the old powerplants and infrastrucutre. China's oil and coal demand have be steadily rising at alarming rates. Thus they are more dependent on them now and harder to break free and invest in renewable sources.

We have to get off of nonrenewable sources at some point in time. But that is the long term goal which can't be achieved in a couple of decades. Kyoto Protocol was a short term goal (1990-2010) in the right direction. As I mentioned before, the next version of the Kyoto Protocol should definitely include Chinese participation. The next conference is scheduled at Copenhagen in Dec of this year. Hopefully the G8+5 would reach some agreement on this session. .. conti..

I agree that we should get off fossil feuls and for once I agree with French policies. I am a strong supporter of nuclear which fuels 77% of the French power grid. And China is rapidly increasing its oil/coal demand thus it will make it harder for them to break off from it.
