Borderline flawless track. It's either this or "Venus In Furs" that is my favourite VU track.

The song, to me, was always about an adulterous relationship. From what I've read, it is a very autobiographical track on Lou's part.

He lists every reason why he should leave. Yet, the pale blue eyes and the way they haunt his soul stop him every time.

Love the main guitar riff in this. It sounds so frail and like a hiccup.

the song is haunting and perfect. take from it want you want--a woman (lovely thought) or drugs (could be). i mean as influencial and genius and innovative as vu has been, most of their stuff is about sex or drugs...sweet jane, heroin, waiting on the man, the list goes on. the only song i can think of off hand that isn't about either is these days, but didn't jackson browne write that? this song is haunting and perfect!!!!!

Pale blue eyes is a reference to pale blue eyes. The Velvet Underground were not some drug crazed morons. They did use drugs, but every song recorded in the 60's isn't a veiled reference to some drug use...except maybe 'Black Betty', and 'Heroine' and 'Purple Haze'...ok there are a good deal of drug songs out there. I just like to think Lou is singing about some chick on this song.

not exactly. it's a reference to a lover who was on the h-train. the smack makes your eyes glassy and makes the colors of the iris much more brilliant. however, i think that the fact that this is about an illicit affair makes all drug references inconsequential to the true meaning of this mellow, beautiful tune.
