You need 2 loco's as that is the measurement train and goes all the way to the end of line in places. Rather than having to run the loco around the train the driver just changes loco's and drives in the other direction. Before the HST New Measurment Train this was the only way to check all the track with the specialist coaches.
Excellent stuff -- does exactly what it says on the tin.
One technical suggestion. When you pan round to show the train heading away from you, you do it very late so, usually, just the rear cab is in the shot while you're moving the camera round. Start panning earlier so that the frame contains more of the subject (the train) more of the time. Best time is probably just after the rear cab enters the frame, rather than just before it leaves.
Not quite was I was expecting when I read the title, I was hoping to see some rock legends strut their stuff, but no matter, trains making this sort of noise was just thrilling.
what the heck is that yellow carriage at 1:41? A coach with a pantograph?

@N330AA It's an overhead line testing vehicle. They've been around for many years; in the BR days it was known as Test Coach IRIS.

Great vid, mate. Why do the Network Rail trains have a 'live' loco at each end?
johno4521 2 years ago
Probably so they can drive it back without having to run the lead loco round.
