Say what you want about survival shows, but these dudes are legit.. they both have had outdoor survival courses wayyyyy before this show was ever even thought up. Cody runs a survival course in Arizona for almost 20 years now. Dave has been running one in Dayton Ohio for a long time as well.
@AlfredMohi These guys take things that people would have and uses it to survive. Bear has it all on hand. the only thing he does is Eat anything. IF anything Les Stroud beats all 3 since he goes out solo. No camera crew. Bear shows what to do. These 2 show how to do it. And Les Stroud does both.
Longwave Radiation (Infrared in this case) isn't trapped by the plastic. The plastic traps the air (heated by IR radiation). The foil blanket reflects the IR radiation back on the same air for another pass making it even warmer.

@landmine21 I was a PA ... but that's the short answer. It was a complicated shoot.... we were quite busy. It was however a lot of fun and I wished I could have gone to other locations to work with those guys again.
listen Bear grylls has some survival skills But he "IS NOT a survival expert"...he is not in the class with Dave or even the legendary AboDude- Cody Lundin....
Man vs wild- u may pick up a few tips here/there but if follow Bear Grylls and his craziness you'll probably end up dead and that's a fact! the only thing going for Grylls is his stunts! tv is all about ratings and Bear knows that....
@huntman125 This is a show, in real life, you'd never do half this stuff. But I always think the same thing, that's why I scoff at Man vs. Wild and loved Survivorman. Man vs Wild, he's jumping out of helicopters, into lakes, leaping over gorges.... Imagine how badass that camera man is! And survivorman, the guy has to haul his OWN cameras around haha
That was amazing what he was able to produce with such minimal materials. We have to look at our space craft when looking at this shelter the mylar was developed as a lightweight insulation for use in space craft when we look at the construction of space crarft they use many differnt layers each serving a specific task all hightec lightweight. We look back at all the lives lost to exposure and how this minimalists shelter could have saved their lives. Bravo Cody you rose above it brilliant.
I love this show I really do. What I like is the contrasting (though no entirely conflicting) styles towards survival in nature. But what's interesting is despite Cody and Dave's different approaches, alot of the basic [for lack of a better word] survival does and don'ts are really the same. Case in point, as soon as they hit the island they both knew they needed shelter and a fire before nightfall hit. Despite diverging views its amazing just how much they are on the same page.
Bush hippie rocks! Both these guys do, just in different ways. And since this kind of show needs a little conflict, Dave's curmudgeony ways keep it interesting.
@murphalot13 Dave is a army military trained asshole..ive been to codys school this man can survive any where..with no shoes steel tools nothing!!!!!!...the same way native americans did it..just living off the land..
@5tonyvvvv I don't feel there is any need to run Dave Canterbury down, as an outdoorsman and teacher he deserves as much respect as Cody Lundin, his concerns about the lack of shoes etc.are genuine and understandable, and after all this clash of cultural styles is part of what makes the show worth watching.
Don't discredit Dave and Cody before you see the show. Bear has his skills, but he holds no credibility because his show was staged (just research it). Dave and Cody are experts and have both spent years developing their skills and knowledge. Watch the show and learn.
I love it when people are honest about their knowledge, I am learning so much about their characters from so little (small video clips). Can't wait to see how much I learn from this show!
Can't wait to see this show! Sounds like the two of them are starting to work together and appreciate the knowledge the other brings to the table in this. Finally, something worth watching on TV! Right on Discovery Channel!
@TheReclamation14 Haha, the funny thing is that if you had watched all the promos you would of seen them repelling down water falls and doing other Bear Grylls stuff.
@Vol4 Yeah, I saw that. Admittedly, Bear definitely has some decent skills. The difference, though, is that he always seemed to pick the hardest solution to a problem. I took that as a lesson in "here's what you COULD do if you HAD to (had no other choice)". Dave & Cody, however, approach things from a "choose the lesser of all evils" mindset. In regards to the waterfall, the situation was approached w/a much less "cavalier" approach (more realistic and survivable).
@Vol4 Yes they did, and if you liston to the announcer, he points out that you face OUT when you do it to avoid getting overcome by the water, and maybe drowing...Bear just goes down, an is constantly getting pummeld buy the downforce.....which is a good way to get blown down, or forced drowned. Ill do it Daves way...Ill live thank you
@MrCableguyken ? the waterfalls they do are completely different kind. Try it on one with overhang and more force and you'll change your mind fast. And it is a tv-show, it is staged. Where would you get pro climbing gear in a survival situation (excluding the obvious ofcourse)?. They were most likely told to do it by the crew.
@raysteer "Where would you get pro climbing gear in a survival situation (__excluding the obvious ofcourse__)?" Why do you repeat what I said? And for that matter why would you want to get wet when you could go down from elsewhere with the gear. But like I said, it looks good on TV, it is entertainment. Btw anyone knows if it is the same crew that worked on man vs wild?
@mlxp Really - you got that opinion from what - a few video clips! Bear is only entertaining because he attempts suicide in very episode. This show will actually teach you something, unlike Man Vs. Wild where he shows you almost the same thing in every episode. Yes Bear, we know you can dive into freezing water, and start a fire with sparks - well done.
