  • HARRY WROTE IT FOR GOD'S SAKE....

  • @goatboyify It was actually written by Tom Evans and Pete Ham, members of Badfinger. Theirs is also the original recording of this song, but it pales compared to Harry's and Mariah's versions. Harry's is better though.

  • Badfinger did the original - period - Nilsson ownes the best version hands down, not to take away the quality of the original - no song - no Harry version

  • Badfinger released the song on Nov. 9, 1970...Nilsson's version came out on Oct. 11, 1971, nearly a year after theirs!

  • This is what music is supposed to sound like....what an amazing voice, thanks for tunes buddy RIP

  • love it....a very nice song......

  • I like Badfinger's version way better! More soul.

  • @suzyk727 You have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about.

  • @zorgen123 Badfinger WROTE this song - writers ALWAYS perform the song better!

  • @suzyk727 wow you are dumb

  • NOT ONLY THAT HE SING THIS, HE IS THE COMPOSER ! HAS A GRAMMY FOR THIS !!!!!

  • @JOJOLINA09 Correction, He didn't Write this song, two members in Bafinger wrote this song, But Harry Sung it best...

  • @bananacreampie4 **Badfinger

  • @bananacreampie4 Wrong dude, Harry wrote it.

  • @doranb1 No... I am not... look it up it is written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans...

  • To the people who say he's lip syncing, he's singing along with his recorded song in case he messes up. If you listen carefully, he's really singing

  • this is my favorite song ever... but I prefer Mariah's version... it's just so powerful...

  • @danivanutti Honestly, most people are going to prefer the version they heard first no matter the objective quality. That said, Mariah is the better and more versatile singer, and brings her vocal power to this song. She remains one of my favorite female singers. However, to me, for pure emotional content; for lyrical interpretation, Nilsson's remains the litmus test for which all others are compared.

  • @danivanutti Wrong again..Harry aced this song and you have NO idea what your talking about..child.

  • @danivanutti if I was a retard, I'd agree with you

  • this may be a funky out of sync video and audio but it is live probably with some backing tracks

  • I like this song

  • This is a lip sync to the original 1970's recording. Great song but poor way to perform.

  • I think he farted at 1:33... No worries Harry break wind all you want, you rock brotha!

  • myself, i think pete ham, and tom evans, did just fine,,

  • It's a shame that Pete Ham couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel before he took his life. Pete and Tom could have brought a lot more great music into this world if their manager wasn't clouding their minds with financial woes.

  • is this playbacked??

  • @ravenvlucht ... I'd say yes... it's too close to the original.. and him harmonising with himself is a bit of a giveaway ;)

  • @foxbor0

    and the fade ending

  • Harry didn't write this... some of you already know this song was written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of BAD FINGER band. Brilliant tune!

  • By far the best singer of this song. Beautiful voice and great person. RIP Harry

  • Good god i wish i could have had the opportunity to throw a rose at him! what a voice! what a heart!

  • Comment removed

  • They said he lost his voice in a screaming match with John Lennon but he is in rare form here. Damn, I love Harry Nilson. <3

    -timbo

  • I love Harry Nilsson .. What a voice, and what a writer.

  • This is totally overdubbed...too bad...didnt come here to watch him dance

  • @abhiem are you kidding??? mariah carey could never hold a candle to this version, nilsson was the master of this tune!

  • @kitcat28 Mariah's got the pipes, but Harry's got the SOUL.

  • @soundy106 EXACTLY!

  • @abhiem no. just... no.

  • awesome..!!

  • omg what a voice......

    makes me shiver..

  • Back in these days many shows would have the artist mime their studio tracks... While this didn't necessarily apply to him, many artists sounded like crap when they tried to play their own stuff live. A few artists rebelled and refused to be on such shows if they couldn't actually play live.

  • r.i.p. Harry !

  • at this time Harry's voice was shot. He had blown out his vocal chords. Knowing him I am guessing that he was still singing along with the track and harmonizing with himself. Prior to this he had basically screamed out his voice with john lennon which led to a short hospital stay--short because harry had mickey dolenz take him from the hospital. The docs couldn't help him get his voice back so he figured get me out of here and bring some booze. Unreal talent too bad he didn't believe it

  • This isn't him singing live is it - you've dubbed the record over the live performance - well done!

  • Yeah I tihnk he's miming, I wonder why

  • I don't think he's singing live. Where's the string section? That's the first clue.

  • He almost sounds too good. Is he actually singing?

  • It's too bad that he had to lip sync this.

  • Harry Nilsson and without you, Mariah is imposter

  • He sings as good as he did when he was young then. What a marvelous masterpiece and superb vocal.

  • @blurredlikesotong I'm glad to hear SOMEONE say that. This myth of Harry Nilsson permanently ruining his voice needs to be retired. Sure, he wrecked his voice in those Lennon sessions but it eventually got better. On his 1977 "Knnillssonn" album he sounds great. A little darker but a singer's voice does age as time passes. Ask Frank Sinatra. People should listen to "A Perfect Day" or "All I think About is YOU." Nilsson DID get his voice back. He took better care of it, too.

  • Prefer the original.

  • @Murreh Do you mean the one from Badfinger?

  • Harry had the pipes for sure and was a really wonderful songwriter. He looks so different here than in his early years. Still a great tunesmith however.

  • 7 people truly have issues. Must be lady gaga or justin "im gay" beiber fans, SAD, VERY SAD

  • The way that he controls his vibrato is just incredible. Only him and Freddie Mercury could sing like that.

  • @lexingtonsband yep, but don't forget the guy they learned it from, Roy Orbison. The Beatles were happy to open for Roy the first time they came Stateside.

  • He never got the recognition he really deserved ;( RIP

  • Nilsson made his last concert appearance September 1, 1992, when he joined Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band on stage at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada to sing "Without You" with Todd Rundgren handling the high notes. Afterwards, an emotional Ringo Starr embraced Nilsson on stage."wiki" not totally reliable. But considering how old he looks here it may be correct.

  • This is the Studio Recording . . . FYI

  • A genious. Who cares if he lipsync'd. Hes a cool guy with a great voice.

  • That was hard to watch. I know his voice was ruined by this point, but they should have let him give it a shot. I've heard other late recordings and they sound pretty decent, at least, better than any of us.

  • Not live (lipsync) but good to see Harry anyway,

  • What a voice! What a great song! What else can I say?

  • Yes this is a lyp synch...BY this time in Harry's life he was unable to sing this song even close to how it had been sung by him at one time.

  • Why would anyone take this perfectly sang song and try to re-do it. Can anyone do better. I think not!

  • Harry sings very soul full on this song. Pete Ham and Tom Evans wrote those heart felt words in the late 1960's. In April of 1975 Pete hung himself at his home. This song has been recorded by more than 180 artists and has made many appearances on the Billboard Hot 100, including the number one position. Harry's recording is probably the best known version of this song.

  • it's definitely a lipsynch from the Nilsson Shmilsson album, but that's not Nilsson. He hated performing live unless he could control the situation, and this is not him at all.

  • @brendangen He was just a down trodden shell of whom he once was trying to recover what had been stolen from him in order to give something back to is family before he left. Plenty of honor in that. Many performers lip sync in love performances.

  • this must be late 1980's right?

  • Live? Its so poorly lipsynced that its an insult !

  • @edfx2004 - an insult to whom? I think Nilsson had a right to lipsync his own material. His fans new he never performed live; these were merely money-making (and pride-swallowing) gigs forced by his financial manager having literally robbed him into bankruptcy. I think the only insult was to himself.

  • @edfx2004 That could be due to the loading of the video. Depending on the connection sometimes the video and audio load a little bit off.

  • Its too bad he drank alot in the end. It neearly ruined his career

  • I figured from the looks of the timing of this video, that it was lip-synched. So very sad, from his self-destructiveness to his being swindled by someone he no doubt trusted. His voice was as beautiful as it was unique, and it was moving.

  • @spotcase It might look weird because they're playing another track of him so he could harmonize with himself. Aghh, every time I hear him sing this I tear up :)

  • This is later in his career and yes, he is lip synching. He blew his voice in a drunken contest with John Lennon. A few years before he died, his accountant absconded with all his money and he had to sell his home and rights to his music to provide for his family. Nilsson never toured or performed in front of audiences so he must have been desperate for money to do this lip-synch we view here. So sad. God bless him. He had one of the most gorgeous voices in the rock world.

  • how'd he get so fat if he was a drug addict

  • @wilcox24 He also drank alot, Jim Morrison really bloated up at the end too.

  • @wilcox24 lots of drug addicts get fat, especially opiate addicts. But, the only thing I knew about Nilsson was that he drank too much for a long time.

  • PLAYBACK!!! BUHH, he had no voice by then..

  • Much love to you Harry. I am sure wherever you are you are singing your heart out.

  • This is very obvious lip-synching. He was phenomenal in his day, but this was after much drug abuse, and his voice was shot.

  • Great work, thank you!

  • This sucks, he's just lip syncing to the album version

  • das ist dien gutten shit!!!

  • remember this song for when i was a little little man . my mum use to love this song

  • SIHTLWYIMLBIKMEDAIDKHMLICLWYAWDIHTHSBILHWAMHBIKM

ASITHCLWMIMHSMIH...due to privacy..just needed to say that..one of my fav songs!

  • i heard this song in the seventies when i lived in england . my favourite song.

  • The song is Spring 1974 as far as I remember and it was 1st in charts 4 or 6 weeks

  • gave me chills!!! beautiful!!!

  • i heard maria carey's version on the radio, then straight after harry's, i dont know why everyone raves about her....woman could not sing a note if her life depended on it. R.I.P HARRY....the world has lost a great talent...

  • @deverry66

and how many records have you sold??? Mariah can outsing the best of them, not to take away from Harry at all :)

  • Awesome song, too bad he's lipsyncing...

  • @isonu84 no the sound is delayed in the vid

  • I was a fan of Badfinger, but I have to say that this version is an improvement on theirs - and vastly superior to Maria Carey's warbling!

  • Es una de mis canciones de las que quiero cantar a tooda voz, solo que esta vez la vivo!

  • 1971 by Harry Nilsson

  • Truly one of the most underappreciated singers of that era

  • Bless his heart. His health was probably not good here. I wonder if he ever knew how much people loved him?

  • Playback - unfortunately !

  • There is the song "One" by Three Dog Night that Nilsson did write.

  • great song!

  • It is a sham that the recording artists' who helped make this powerful masterpiece of love a major hit take credit for creating the atmosphere that helped drive it .

  • This is a great song but Harry did o write it. Ham and evans of Badfinger wrote it.

Harry upon first hearing it thought it was a Beatles song. Harry gave it soul.

  • This isn't live

  • love the spotlights shining off his glasses. they don't make 'em like Harry any more. if they do, only one at a time and we're long overdue for another...

  • Definitely lip-synch. A great song, originally by Badfinger! Written by Pete Ham & Tom Evans. Harry's version is what brought it to the Main stream listeners ears. What a Song, and a Great Version!

    Thanx for sharing..

  • Looks like a lip-synch to me.. nevertheless it's Harry Nilsson, worth my time watching this video.

  • Man, Harry looks really bloated in this video!

  • Isn't this mimed?

  • @42heaste42 looks like it, sadly

  • @42heaste42

Yes this not a live recording unfortunately. I love Harry and if this is the only thing we get to watch I'm OK with it. That is if Harry's family is. Miss you a lot Harry.

  • only halve way of the song and already applause

    what a gay !

    5/5

  • Harry sang this song the best out of every1 that sang it. Sadly, Harry has passed away. R.I.P. Harry, u r sadly missed by many

  • Man was a genius and one helluva character. John Lennons drinking buddy during his lost weekend, drank anybody under the table.

  • Nothing to be proud of.

  • @manconoo

And... in the long run... it killed him.

  • @sweetcurmudgeon I know..so sad but his incredible music will always live on.

  • Awesome Classic Thank's for sharing, rock on Harry

  • Is he blind or are the lights bright?

  • @Snoopy2299 From what I understand, Harry Nilsson never enjoyed performing live--or even a lip-synched performance as this one is--and actively avoided it, except for a few TV appearances and rare personal occasions. I think the shades are a defense against having to look the audience directly in the eye and for them to be able to see his eyes, which I imagine held significant emotional discomfort. Just a guess... :-(

  • im glad its synced cuz i wouldnt want to hear the cracked voice ;)

  • HeyHilarysucks!...Just got the latest Grammy score... Harry 2...Hilary 0! Who wants to hear your voice? Or guitar?

  • Aw, poor guy doesn't look well. LIke he might be uncomfortable in a public setting.

    Song is still great.

  • Is this really Harry Nilsson? He looks very old.

  • This is definitely lipsynched, in fact there is 1 spot that is noticably out of synch. Ashley Simpson wasn't the 1st. By the way, this is such a common song title that Wykopedia currently lists 32 songs titled Without You. I knew of 2 others, posted a comment & there are probably more.

  • This was synced. as by this stage Harry's voice was gruffer from tobacco smoking and whatnot. the gruff sound worked for him on some songs though - check out 'Old Forgotten Soldier'.

  • had my very first slow dance to this song. sigh......

  • @angelicanna How many toes did you tread on?

  • Fabulous... no one had such pure of tone and greatness of lyric as Harry Nilsson... This is the first song of his I heard, way back when... My fav. album of his was "NilssonShmilsson"... What a great album... I had it as an 8-track.. listened to it over and over as I drove.. Rest in Peace, Mr. Nilsson. Great memories...

  • que clasicoooooooo linda cancion

  • says it was # 1 song in Feb of '72 starting feb 13.. so number one song when i was born

  • @wemetin2002 -i was in 9th grade. i miss tommy donlon, my late friend.we were 14. that was too young.

  • but u gotta give badfinger credit for creating such a beautiful song for others to excel. Harry Nilsson could have been nowhere near this level of fame if not for this song.

  • I think Harry Nilsson is great-but theres no way he sang this live-not unless the guy who uploaded this video overdubbed Harry's studio version onto this?

  • doc what year was this. this show.

  • I'm not sure when it was recoreded. I found it on a web site in Europe

  • Mariah Carey kills this song. No class

  • Nilsson canta muito.

    Essa musica e linda

  • Nilsson wrote and performed this song when Mariah was barely out of diapers!

  • He did not write this, check Apple records for more info. They are all dead. Shame.

  • Thanks.

  • Dude, seriously. Harry Nilsson's version does NOT suck. You may dislike it but it is not bad. It's a million times better than Mariah Carry's version....

  • Nilson made the song his own, earned a grammy for it and no version could ever be better than Harry's.Badfingers was quite sloppy. Oh and you are no Beatle fan if you talk shit like that about Harry.

  • " a lot better than this "?

Nilsson's version was a 1971 Billboard #1 hit - while Badfinger's version didn't even chart! Even Apple thought Badfinger's wasn't good enough for a single.

This is one of those exceptions the writters/band's version was not as good as a cover.

  • Goodtime traveler... yep. All along the watchtower is another...

  • quelle voix sublime

    nilsson nous manque tant

  • Fantastic song

  • nothing short of a classic. I had the lucky opportunity to see him in beatlefest in 1992 and he did this song with beatles tribute band liverpool. My sister was there too and she loved it. It was an awesome experience sadly he passed away about a year later. Great ,great song.

  • Only recently has learnt what exactly Harry Nilson sings the original version of a song. It is magnificent! Mariah Carey to it it will not be compared

  • Badfinger wrote the original.

  • Amazing song. Without a doubt he's lip syncing it.

  • he was still brilliant

  • He sure was.

  • You're a long way away. I'm in Dublin, Ireland.

  • not a problem. he was brilliant anyway. am messaging from sydney australia - you?

  • Hey PartyWithDaHardyz, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. God bless.

  • is he lip singing or was this dubbed?

  • While this is a cover of the original Badfinger song, it is the big hit. Mariah did good but this is the classic original.

  • I miss Harry.

  • this song makes me miss my mom

    :(

  • It's nice to hear this version, no offense but I prefer this cover to mariah carey' version

  • wow nice, I've been looking for some live footage of him.

  • lol, you're right! i almost pee'd myself at 56:00. cat arse!!!!!!

  • Wow, he has a mouth like a cat's arse! Never notice that before!

  • thanks so much for this post - even though lip-synced it's still wonderful. Check out little touch of schmillson - brilliant and seemingly effortless.

  • Harry Nilsson was a one-off. Brilliant.

  • @peachxjamie

Later in 1971 Nilsson went to England with producer Richard Perry to record what became the most successful album of his career. In the Charts: 1972: UK #1; USA #1; D # 12 Look at Wikipedia. Harry's live is very interesting!
