Actually, Abraham Lincoln winning the election was one of the reasons why the south seceded from the nation which caused the Civil War. The south shot cannons at the Northern Army because they wouldn't leave the land, but the part about him keeping the nation together is right and it is one of the main reasons why he is a well known president today. Another main thing he did was he freed al the slaves from the seceded states (he didn't free slaves in southern states that didn't secede).
