Just finished reading 'The Pavement Arena' and ordered 'Watch My Back' online on Friday. As someone who has practiced Shotokan Karate, Boxing and Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, everything this bloke says makes sense to me.
@QuestAcademy lol yeah i'm just kidding- thought hey do look more like bowling shoes than the majority of either karate/boxing shoes i've seen (which are also ricisulous looking)
hello, could someone help me. this may sound stupid but does anyone have any idea how i could test if i have knockout potential without actually doing it on a person.
@pjggregory The only way to know for sure is to glove up and step into the ring. And of course some people are a lot harder to knock out than others. Nevertheless, one thing you can do on your own to test your punching power is to "crack" a heavy bag. If you can make a 150 lb. heavy bag jump up & down on its chains (not just swing back & forth) when you hit it, you'd probably be able to knock some guy out if you managed to land that same punch on his chin.
Yes, make a video of you punching a focus pad or a heavybag (let me see a closeup and a total view) an i can tell you if you would be able to knock somone out. Check out some of my videos to see that im familiar with the topic
to make geoffs system work you have to start at the begining an thats awareness then you have to verse yourself in the fence and then this tiny part of the system will make perfect sense i beleive that mr thompson and his freinds teach pure no bullshit self defence - 10/10 this man is my idol , thank you
I know what you mean mate, first thing they teach in Boxing is defence, but he's instructing punching skills for an every day environment (in a bar or a street ect..) not boxing.
@Pankration321 Absolutely right. He's not teaching boxing here (although he could), this is the one punch pre-emptive strike. Keeping the hands down makes the strike more unexpected.
@cygroltd depends what stage of the conflict you are in.if the fight still has a chance of being defused then it may help calm the situation as arms up is very aggressive. if you are striking pre-emptivly then maybe able to catch unaware.
Geoff Thompson is such a gentlemen, yet he's a mean mean fighting machine love this bloke, such a inspiration wish there were more people in the world like him take care, keep up the good work.
@cavtherav several years back, I emailed the guy, and he actually replied. There was no ego, he was down to earth. I was/am still impressed. Very cool guy.
By the way when I mentioned speed being more important than power in the situation I once found myself. I do not mean speed with no power at all. I mean sometimes a little less power is prefered if it means you get to hit before being hit. If I went for just speed I would not have been able to stop that guy, yet if I tried to go for loads of power that screwdriver wud've been in my face or neck before I could make contact. Luckily the guy pulled his arm out for power/momentum so telegraphed move
a short jab to the stomach isnt going to knock anyone out street fight , ring fighting it doesnt matter your not getting knocked out by a short range jab to the stomach ...the point I getting at is why teach that method when there are more efficient ways to disable an opponent.
@finemonk because its there. that happens to be your option at the moment. You may be looking at this like stop motion animation; its not as if there will be this one movement with no follow up. Its likely that movement will work in combination. In fact, what if it *opens* up the guard, to allow you to throw that knock out you're wanting? eh?
I was in a situation when a guy who had about 4 or five friends with him was being racist and stopped me. I noticed he had a screwdriver driver in his hand so I remembered Geoffs instructions of putting up guard. Before I could try talking my way out of situation the guy tried to attack me. I automatically did similar move to his solar plexus and stopped him in his track. I then ran for it. I know that if I went for power move instead of speed I would have got me messed up bad probably killed.
there is no power in a short range jab to the stomach .....it ends up becoming a punch like the smash when backed by power ......jabs are meant to set up not knock out .....this isnt no bruce lee one inch punch.
I have read many of his books and have had the great pleasure to have met geoff. hes a very nice guy but i wouldnt like to get on the wrong side of him.much respect to you geoff keep up the good work.
Even a bare knuckle no rules bad ass can find him coming up short when some street thug has his buddy hit him in the back of the head with a brick. The real predators don't attack when someone is ready and they stack the deck in their favor by using greater numbers and equalizers.
People saying that it is poor boxing technique - he is not teaching you how to box. It is for self-defence. You don't stand in the street arguing with somebody with your guard up like the marquis of queensbury. You train to hit first and hit really hard from a natural posture.
When you consider the variables of hidden and makeshift weapons and the possibility/likelihood his friends will help him. It's more like a cherries & watermellons comparison.
I'm surpised by although he is a fairly decent sized man...his punching power seems average..I mean his pads are making some noise when he hits them but notice the pad doesn't move much while the much smaller kid/student of his is holding them..even when Thompson punching with all he's got. When I and many other guys I've trained with over the years hit a pad like that..it's loud and it flys the holders arm back with a violent snap. I would have thought his punching power would be huge. Hmmm
if you dont follow through deeply with the strike the pad wont move much. if the strike is fast and has body weight behind it doesnt have to go deeply into the target to damage. 2-5 cm. without gloves this is enough. try it barefist on yr partners belly, chest...
Wisdom is to treat every situation and person as new.Now is life ilfe is now fearlesness is possible in fact you are fearless.the ego is fear awareness is fearless. If you're coming from love there is no fear.
Geoff is in a class of his own, a very humble human being, and a true friend to those that know him, his teaching skills are second to none, and his advice on life, and self defence is renowned world wide. Take it from me, Geoff is as good as they come as an inspirational martial artist, self defence expert, and those that know him, are blessed to have him in their life.
yeah man as a boxer i agree but you have to understand he focuses on so many fighting styles and all sorts of martial arts and hes going to be stronger at some then the other
those punches are knockout punches, quality
